Day 13: It's all in a Name

There are many reasons why a beauty junkie will purchase countless lipsticks. We lose our mind over color, texture, packaging, brand, the free gift with purchase and the limited editions. The nuts and bolts of the lipstick are analyzed over makeupalley and various beauty blogs. This discourse can make or break a lipsticks future. Will it sell out within a week of launch or will it end up at your local CCO outlet collecting dust on a shelf?

I have a crazy theory that lipstick names also play a part in their success or failure. The naughtier the name, the better it sells. For example, MAC's Lavender Whip, sold out within a week of launch at most counters. The color is unique, amazing and flattering on so many, yet it is still a difficult color for the masses to get behind. The slightly naughty connotation of the whip might just have nudged it along to greatness. Nars has made naughty names common place. People tittered over Orgasm but it was Deep Throat that made me pause. I knew the man was a diabolical genius. He carries on his work with such clever names gleamed from movies such as Pillow Talk and Boogie Nights. My personal favorite has always been Foul Play. Besides being the perfect pink nude, I have always adored saying the name. It made me feel slightly vampy like Barbara Stanwyck in Double Indemnity. I was required to buy Female Trouble due to my long standing love of Mr John Waters. I also bought Rimmel's Snog lip gloss just based on the name. I just wanted to be able to say that I was wearing snog on my lips. Luckily the color is flattering!

MAC also likes to flirt with naughty. A few names spring to mind such as Illicit(a fleshy nude gloss), Lingerie(a baby pink frost lipstick), Racy(a pink coral 3d glass), Tartlette(a shimmering peach lipglass), and Cockatease(a fizzy peach frost). There are so much more in the line but that would require at least a weeks time to dig into the archives.

Chanel keeps it above the belt and very ladylike. Standout names are Sweet Sixteen, Sundress(a baby pink glossimer), Flirt, Darling and Pink Ballerina. The names seem girly and wholesome.

Sometimes a lippie can get political. Lipstick Queen's Oxymoron gloss in Honest Politician had to come home with me due to the clever name.
I work for a politician.
I wear it throughout the primaries and every political dinner. It pairs well with a smokey eye and gives me a giggle during long winded speeches.

What are your favorite lipstick or lip gloss names?

I'm still mourning MAC's discontinuing Spanish Fly. Not only was it named after an aphrodisiac, it was the possibly the best lip color ever...

Lets not forget NARS Sexual Healing and Bad Education either.
I have bought E/S for the same reason too, who wouldn't want an eyeshadows called Sin (UD), Naked Lunch (MAC), or Lusty (from an online etailer). I just bought Lipstick Queens Big Bang Glosses for the name, they are beautiful. Also the from the Beaute' line I have purchased Cobra and Medusa, the colors rock, but the names are killer.

Yes, sometimes it CAN be all in a name.

Kai: Spanish Fly always makes me think of the Beastie Boys. LOL

Fatbottomdgrl: I love the name Cobra. That just sounds like the perfect name for a red.

Chanel Vamp I will always love, and of course my favorite pink lip pencil NARS Sex Machine. An HG.

This girl walked by, she gave me the eye, reached in the locker grabbed the Spanish Fly.
Oh, thanks for making me think of old school Beasties!
I liked the Too Faced Glamour gloss that were all names after old 80's song too-Strange Love and Girls on Film were my favorites.
But today, I'm all about Mac Boy Bait Cremesheen over Marquise'D lipstick. Looks and sounds sexy!

I buy just about anything with an Audrey Hepburn reference or a Paris reference. Names most definitely play a part in the popularity of a product. (Although I can't think of any lip product right now...)

OOOH and MAC's Lady Danger (a matte orangy red) is one of the most awesome name. If I'm ever a super hero, that would be my name.

I am such a dork...I am always reminded of dessert when I think of 'Lavender Whip', possibly akin to a raspberry mousse.

Guess we all know where my head is.

I always liked the names: Mac Ruby Woo and Nars Belle de Jour.

Mine are two long discontinued L'oreal shades from the late 80's - Grecian Lilac (an ethereal pale, pale gold tinged lilac) and British Red Coat (stunning fire engine red). I think L'oreal just had great names, period. Anyone remember their also discontinued Sea Violette nail polish? The coolest iridescent deep violet, with blue-green-gold tones. Very apt! Also Maybelle's Sugar Plum Ice (is this still sold? it was my signature shade in junior high!)

Oh my gosh, I have a L'Oreal Sea Violette nail polish! It must be a hundred years old but it is indeed such a great color-I can't part with it!
I wore Mac Pink Fish TLC, that's not too sexy of a name, a bit gross really...

I love both the name and the colour of Nars' Forbidden Red.

Anon, I use Vritish Red and I'm sure I just got a new tube a couple of months ago. I can take a look for you, and post back here.

Love this series!

NAR's has the best names, often related to film or locations (Cheyenne, Morocco, Venice, Keyna). No way I could resist Dolce Vita everything. Then there is the legendary French film, Belle de Jour. That one never stops getting my attention but there is no way I can wear a light nude beige lipstick.

Furthermore, I keep debating over the shadow Persepolis because it was such a wonderful film based on a graphic novel which I also read. The colors are beautiful but a little intense. If you wear vibrant colors however, do check it out.
