This is one of my favorite paintings at the Butler! I used to just stare at it wondering how Sargent "did it." I've heard that he would often leave a painting be, go out to do something else, then return to his studio, add one brushstroke to whatever painting he was working on and then leave to go do something else. I am sure he didn't entire paintings this way or they would have taken forever to complete. His confidence in his ability is astounding and his work is amazing.
Maybe I'll post some of my faves, now that you've got me in a Sargent frame of mind!
I miss the Butler. Hell, I even took art classes there when I was 12 or so.
