Dear Annie,
I need help! I have curly, unruly, thick and course hair. I would like you to ask your devoted readers for some advice on products for my type of hair. Right now I am using Ouidad products. I like them, but can't give a "review" on them yet. I only have been using those products for less than a month. I have, though, used Garnier Frucits, Tresseme, Fekkai, basically, anything for curly hair. Nothing seems to work. Please HELP ME! I want to go from Roseanne Roseannadanna to Melina Kanakaredes hair!!! Thanks to anyone who can lead a helping hand!!!
Jennifer

I am absolutely obsessed with Dr. Miracle’s Relaxed Hair Potion right now. My hair is super curly and I have tried countless other products and this one definitely works the best. It’s the only one that actually tamed my hair, and frizzies like it said it would, not to mention it leaves a nice tingling feeling! Hope this helps!
Hello! :)
I can sympathize with your struggle. It took me years to understand my curly hair and to work *with* it, rather than against it.
Three online resources that I have found very helpful and informative are: www.naturallycurly.com, www.makeupalley.com (especially the haircare board and product reviews), and www.jessicurl.com. I like Ouidad’s products, too.
For my own hair, the most essential guidelines seem to be: 1.) Avoid silicones and alcohol, 2.) Always use a diffuser with the blow-dryer, 3.) Never use a brush, and 4.) Condition, condition, condition!
My current favorite products for styling are Aveda Be Curly and Phytologie Phytodefrisant, which I mix together in my hand, and a few spritzes of Pantene Curl Defining Spray Gel.
Good luck!
I have the thickest curliest hair EVER--I blowdry straight most of the time but when I wear it curly the Devachan shampoo and gel are great.
unlike straight hair, you really do need a terrific cut to make curly hair look its best. Naturallycurly.com has terrific recommendations for stylists. good luck! sara
Carol's Daughter has some awesome products that are made for people with curly, unruly hair who want to wear it naural - plus they smell awesome!
I don't have any fancy techniques other than this: Suave Clarifying Shampoo, regulare Pantene conditioner and special FX silk drops. I've tried EVERYTHING and this, by far is the best combination of products that tames my course, thick wavy hair into silky bouncy waves with a blowdryer and a large-barrel curling iron. (Doesn't take as long as it sounds...20 minutes from wet to finish) Not good for leaving naturul though...which I NEVER do becaues it looks so good the other way...
I have also tried the "Fructis" line. The serum in the globe-looking container smells AWFUL, like cheap men's cologne. I used it about 4 times and threw it away because it smelled that bad.
You might also take a look at nappturality.com and motowngirl.com for great care and styling info for curly/kinky hair.
As for products, I like Oyin (oyinhandmade.com -- especially the Greg Juice and the Whipped Pudding), Carol's Daughter (especially the Hair Milk) and the Ojon line (especially the Restorative Hair Treatment). Herbal Essences also has a great, inexpensive line for curly hair. The main thing is to work WITH your hair and not against it. Hope this helps!
I have super thick and curly hair.
I use nothing but Devachan. Look it up. Make an appt with Carlos. He will give you a step by step course pn how to care for your curls. I promise you will not be dissappointed.
Hello,
Two friends go to the Ouidad salon in NYC and their hair looks gorgeous all the time. They also use the products and swear by them. The biggest thing with curly hair is moisture, moisture, moisture and not to mess with it so much. My curls like to be left alone, which means no combing after I get out of the shower. It sounds crazy, but I get better results when I do less combing, washing, and styling. I like a deep conditioner called Hask Placenta mixed with Paul Mitchel Hair repair treatment, pile your hair in a plastic cap and apply heat for 20 minutes. Then I rinse, no combing, and tie my hair down with a scarf. I also like this hair lotion called Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil. It's super rich and really moisturizes. I seem to get better results by doing less with my hair, than more. My curls like to be left alone after washing. In general, the less washing, combing, styling the better. It's almost like doing the opposite of what one would do for straight hair. Hope this helps!
listen, no matter what anyone says, they do not have the same hair as you. I do. In fact, my 8th grade graduation pic says it all: short hair+ curly hair= triangle like shape. There is not magic product. Just learn to love it.
Do not wash your hair with soap or too often. Use conditioner only. See Devachan website.
My hair is coarse and kinky with some curl. I swear by the Pantene range followed by Kiehls Creme Groom with Silk.
I. Want. Your. Hair!!!! GARrrrrhhhhh!!!!
Hello,
Believe me, I know what you’re going through. I have curly, coarse, medium thickness hair and for most of my teens and twenties, I blow-dried my hair almost every-day, because I just didn’t want to deal with the unexpected results of curly hair. I never knew if my hair would look cute or frizzy headed (most times it was just a poufy mess). To be honest, This is the 1st year that I have really stepped away from blow-drying all the time (I’m 25) Like you, I have tried literally every product available, including everything you listed, as well as everything the other readers listed. One thing that I’ve found to be essential when dealing with curly hair is what process you use. This is what I found to be the absolute best—to get shiny, bouncy, great looking curls. On a regular basis, it is important to deep condition to keep curls shapely and shiny. I do this by microwaving whatever deep conditioner or regular conditioner I am using until it is warm, but not hot (I personally prefer Fekkai protein rx line). I put it on my hair and try to let it sit for at least an hour or two. I usually do this before showering.
On an everyday basis, this is the process that worked the best with me. I shampoo and condition with the Fekkai protein rx line and once out of the shower. I will gentle squeeze out some of the water with a towel, just enough so that water isn’t dripping too much. But I do try to keep it wet. I will spray a very generous amount of leave in conditioner on a wide square paddle brush (I use John Frieda Daily nourishment leave in fortifying spray). I brush it through all of my hair, until I feel all of my hair has gotten some of the product on it. Then I will take a gloss and drizzle some on the paddle brush (I use Chi Silk infusion—but any good gloss or serum should work the same---I’ve use pantene, fekkai, biosilk, etc and gotten similar results). Comb through hair from the ears on down and particularly target the ends with the gloss. Then scrunch hair with your hands to get the curls going, then let dry.
I hope this works for you. I found that this leave-in spray conditioner and gloss combo work the absolute best for my hair. Good Luck!!!
I am a little late to this post but I would like to add that I agree doing less with curly hair is best - i.e. less product, less fussing - and starting with a very good cut is the most important thing. That being said, I would like to say that the new generation 'wet to dry' flat irons, used with a product that protects the hair from too much exposure to heat (I like the La Coupe spray) are amazing! I let my hair air dry (it is curly but not too frizzy, not dry either, thank goodness) while I dress, put on make-up etc. and then I go to work with the iron - 10 minutes tops and my hair stays through even the most humid conditions.... just don't over-do anything!
