For the next 40 days and 40 nights cavewoman will be reviewing Primers. We are hoping to have a primer review for every day during Lent.
We are also going on a "No Buy" during this time.
It has been years since I have participated in Lent or denied myself any pleasures.
We will see if I survive this intact.

Dreams really do come true. (Vogue)

On December 29th I wrote my wishes for 2006.
Here is the list again:

Hopes and dreams for 2006:
1. 2000 et une Rose is relaunched by Lancome (My #1 wish came true! It will be released in June 2006. It will exclusive to Saks.)
2. That there is a new fragrance by Ormonde Jayne. (This might be coming true)
3. Safran Troublant is released in a jumbo bottle (everyone says that this is coming true)
4. The Stella fragrance by Tocca finally comes out (I am starting to give up hope)
5. I win a free trip to paris and I can take a friend
6. A Cmart opens up in my town
7. I stumble across a seve exquise bottle in T J Maxx
8. Fumerie Turque is released in the export range (It is coming! I can hardly believe it!)
9. Luckyscent has a discount (Close. There is a code to get a free Monyette Paris candle)
10. Vol de Nuit finally works with my chemistry

My revised list:
1. A Cmart opens up in my town
2. I stumble across a Seve Exquise bottle in T J Maxx
3. I meet my match (notice that meeting my soulmate comes after the Seve bottle)
4. I find a Guerlain bee bottle at an antique store. It is affordable.
5. I find a Lily Dache hat
6. I find the perfect primer
7. I visit NYC several times during the year
8. My friends find happiness and peace
9. That I get to meet Linda from Ormonde Jayne
10. That Chinatown wins at the fifi awards.Posted by Picasa

She had a dream wedding filled with several couture gown changes, custom made hats from Stephen Jones and Louboutin shoes. Cathy Horyn's take:
Miuccia Prada seemed off her game this season. In her show on Tuesday, it was plain she wanted to take a more hard-core approach to dressing, banishing the girlish, cottony dresses of spring and replacing them with dark-gray knit minidresses and slouchy wool and nylon parkas inspired (it seemed) by the urban world of rap music. There were a lot of things to like in the collection: namely the helter-skelter toughness of coats with a strip of fur up the back or over the pockets, the bustier tops in gray flannel worn with loose, boyish trousers, and a silver-sequined bustier, worn with brown taffeta shorts, that had a black, boned lingerie back.Unfortunately the murky layers, and the metropolis backdrop, came too close to Marc Jacobs recent show, and the raw-looking fur recalled early Helmut Lang. (NYTimes/Fashionspot)

My take:
1. I bet Miuccia was listening to Jay Z.
2. The interest and extra fabric at the hips was jarring to see. Then I remembered the fuss made when Vivienne Westwood had the collection that focused on the derriere. It was innovative and years before its time.
3. Does it seem like Santino is predicting every trend in high fashion and ice skating costumes? It is like he is a fashion Nostradamus.
4. There were no coats to love and covet. There are always Prada coats to covet.

CultureBloom Collection review from Cavewoman
Beauty Editor at Large at Blogdorf Goodman

Fresh and fast on the heels of the beautiful Catherine Deneuve Icon Collection, MAC has now released Culturebloom, a Spring palette of color which seems at first glance to bring back the concepts for which MAC is famous, their unusual combinations of colors and textures, but to me was still a bit safer and more muted than the collections of previous years. "I'm underwhelmed," to quote my favorite Project Runway judge Michael Kors. I don't think I'm alone. Buzz on the makeup chat boards is echoing these same thoughts. I really like when I can look at a color collection and think to myself "hmmm, I get it!" but I did not "get" this arrangement of color. Let me go through the collection shades and perhaps you'll be able to visualize and maybe even explain the collection to me!

Lipsticks: Always the most anticipated item in each collection. The clear hit of the six new lipsticks is the one named after the collection, Culturebloom. So bright and red and moving a bit toward cool in tone, this one item commanded my attention. I'm thinking of "One of these things just doesn't belong here" -that little ditty from Sesame Street. It's the brightest item on the display. Other lipsticks are Plant A Kiss, a light brown (ok MAC, you really needed more brown lipsticks), Awaken, a pale frosted coral, Poppy Hop which is apricot frost, Florabundi, a lilac-frost dead ringer for the discontinued Madame B, and Fresh Buzz, a milky neutral peach with a cool pink iridescence. This last one is a most unusual finish for MAC, I don't remember any other lipstick with this duochrome attitude.

The other lip product offering is the group of Lusterglass, a pigmented gloss that is applied with a brush wand instead of the sponge-tip of the LipGlass glosses. Budding is a warm pinky-coral frost, Tranceplant is dark dark muddy brown, Flowerosophy is the palest apricot, and Petal Pusher is a blue-based pale pink. To me there is nothing new about these shades, other than the fact that most of them are similar to other LipGlass shades but just made into the Lustreglass formula and its brush applicator container.

Cremestick lip liners come in four shades that to me did not even correspond well to the lip colors I've just described. Smoothberry is called a 'deep rose' but it is not a cool-toned shade. Softwood is supposed to be coral-brown but to me it is more of a tan shade. Sublime Culture is, according to the website description, "pink-caramel fusion" but I couldn't find the pink in it at all. Summerfruit is pale coral. Are you catching a theme here?

Eyeshadows come in individual pots, there is no pre-made palette here. Most of this group seem to be a tweaking of previously-released shades, sometimes to the point of "what's the point" in my humble opinion. MAC already has a great array of peachy-frosty shadows, so why is there yet another one here, LoveBud? Botanical is very close to Satin Taupe but just a tad warmer. The difference is almost indiscernible on the skin. Overgrown is acid lime green and is the most out-of-place shade in the group. My SA had paired it with Spring Up (bright yellow with very little shimmer) for her own eye look, and although she had applied them with a light hand, they were startling on the eye. Not in a good way startling. The two prettiest and most wearable shades are Lavender Sky, a red-based medium purple, and my personal favorite of the group Iris Print, which is a blue-based violet.

I happen to be a fan of MAC's Blushcremes, and was anticipating Sweet William to be a very cool-toned pink shade, according to photos I had seen on the MAC website and on a few of the makeup chat groups online. Even though I did cave on this one, it is definitely not cool toned. It's a pretty, warm pink shade, but still I wish MAC would listen to me and bring out some more truly blue-based cheek colors. The other blushcreme is Blossoming, which in a side-by-side comparison is so close to the Deneuve color Summer Lily that I wonder again, why? If you have one, you won't buy the other, and isn't the buying what these collections are all about?

Rounding out the collection are an eye kohl liner pencil (you sharpen this one) in Violet Underground, a blue-based shade that is bright enough to actually appear dark violet on the eye, and the Zoomlash mascara in Black. Your reviewer knows the reputation of MAC mascaras and did not even test this product.

My overall impression is that MAC threw this collection together with little regard for unity or innovation. After so many beautiful, cutting-edge shades and stunning collections from the last two years , for which people are still clamoring to obtain long-discontinued shades and products, I don't think that in six months people will be searching eBay for anything from Culturebloom.

(gettyimages)
It was a fairly lackluster fashion week. As always I managed to find tons of pieces that I will start to covet and dream about. I am lemming the entire Tuleh collection. I loved the pencil skirts and vintage inspired coats. I also loved the fact that Bryan Bradley left handwritten notes on all the chairs. You have to love good manners in a world where it is cut throat and often ugly.

I also loved the Vera Wang collection. This collection marks the third time I have been blown away by her talent. Do not get me wrong. She was always good. But something has happened...that has made her mindblowingly genius good. Look at the details on the gowns and the draping and twisting. It is like Madame Gres has possessed her body.

I am still on the fence concerning the Marc Jacobs show. I think I am leaning toward liking it. There was something comforting with the layers of clothing. Like building your own personal cocoon in a world gone mad. I also appreciated how he lightly teased the consumer with grunge again. I am sure this will be a successful collection. The olsen twins alone will make large orders.

Donna Karan floored me with her fall collection. I had stopped paying attention to what she did a few years back. It could be the best collection she has ever done. I know that is heavy praise and it might be misguided.

Calvin Klein: Finally a good strong collection. The standout gown is a sheer gown with a chevron pattern in red & black. That gown is going to be huge. A star among dresses.

Narciso Rodriguez: My beloved and favorite fashion writer Cathy Horyn described it as a collection that "evoked a primal heat". I went back to style.com to see what the hell I missed.
I did not see anything worthy of inspiring that kind of reaction. I did not find it thrilling but there were some lovely coats, architectural elements, lots of volume and plastic used as embellishments.

Zac Posen: It was like the school textbook to the 2006 fall collections. Each trend was well represented and done beautifully. It was pretty flawless.

These fashion blogs did great coverage of the week:
http://almostgirl.coffeespoons.org/
She was reporting straight from the tents. It was wonderful seeing the shows through a newcomer's eyes. Make sure to read the comments. There were some amazing debates.

I have not blogged about Project Runway since last week. I am angry the way the show is going. Clearly the producers are telling the judges that Santino has to stay. He is producing horrible work even though he is very talented. Nick did produce an ill fitting suit but at least he did not glue his garment together nor was it falling apart on the runway. I am half tempted to say that Santino will be voted off on Wednesday. If you check out the Project Runway fashion show pictures on gettyimages you will notice how Santino's show looks NOTHING like anything he has produced on the show. I am thinking he went home and reflected on all his lectures from Kors and Nina. This is just my guess.

Check out the blog FourFour for the best Project Runway episode recaps. He is hilarious and owns the most adorable cat named Winston.
Seriously...You must visit this blog.

Marc Jacobs: I have mixed feelings on the collection.
I loved the slouchy pants and lady like gloves. I love the fact that he appreciates Phillip Glass. I love the fact that he actually designed a winter collection that featured season appropriate clothing.
Still...he makes me hesitate.
I do not think it is the "grunge" aspect.
I actually loved his grunge collection.
It was the first time I recognized a street fashion being heralded as something chic and worthy in a magazine.
I actually saved my British and American Vogue magazines from that time period.
I truly have no clue why I am on the fence when it comes to this show.
I might need to sleep on this one.

Grunge the first time around. (Vogue/fashionspot)

from Interview Magazine:
MARY: Let's revisit a collection I loved, which was the Spring '93 Grunge Collection for Perry Ellis.
MARC: Oh, it's my favorite.
MARY: Oh, good.
MARC: That was a time when I did love music, I couldn't get enough of what was going on. Maybe it was Nirvana that brought me back. I guess it was a comfort because something that sounded so right — and non-commercial — had become so influential, so immediately. I remember being in Berlin the year the wall came down, and I was in some bar, and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was on the radio. At that moment I felt an energy I'd only felt before at clubs like Hurrahs, or when I was listening to garage bands.
MARY: Did that free you to try something radical?
MARC: I liked the idea of making some visual noise through clothing. I found a two-dollar flannel shirt on St. Mark's Place and I sent it off to Italy and had it made into a $300-a-yard plaid silk. It was like the Elsa Perretti crystal tumbler at Tiffany that was inspired by a paper Dixie Cup. I love to take things that are everyday and comforting and make them into the most luxurious things in the world.
MARY: And you made the fancy Birkenstocks.
MARC: Yes. We asked Birkenstock to make satin Birks. We asked Converse to make duchesse satin sneakers. If I were wearing a tuxedo I'd want to wear it with satin Converse sneakers. I'd want my tuxedo to be shrunken and ill-fitting, so I'd look like one of the John Holmstrom cartoons from Punk magazine. It's the idea of imperfection, of being awkward.
MARY: Did you know it would cause such a stir?
MARC: I didn't set out to be some hellion. But everybody labeled it grunge. There were a lot of things that stimulated me to do it, and music was one of them. But there was also this new kind of beauty that was starting to be recognized. Girls like Kate Moss. There was this idea of the shoe-gazer, this person who couldn't look up, who's sort of insecure. And I've always felt like that, that I never fit in. But that's sort of empowering too.

Important notice: I am now seeing this dress being quoted as being designed by someone else. I am going to leave this up but proceed with caution. This might be a trick to fool Runway fans or it really was designed by someone else. I might have jumped the gun since I want Daniel V to win so bad. Regardless...whoever designed this dress made Fergie look better than she has in years.

Daniel V dress on Fergie.
I have no idea if this is a hint of the future. A Nick design was spotted on the red carpet of the SAG awards. It was worn by Brenda Starr from Desperate Housewives.

My pick is still Daniel V with Chloe, and Santino/Nick being in the top three.
I am thinking it will be Santino before Nick.
