40 Days and 40 Nights of Beauty Cult Classics
Day 10 , OPI's I Am Not Really A Waitress by Melanie Parker

In 1999, OPI introduced a shimmering cherry red nail polish called I'm Not Really a Waitress as part of its first Hollywood collection. The company has left its swatch on the beauty products industry with the ever droll and very punny names for its colors, which are always grouped with some sort of theme. However, no other polish has sold as well for the company in more than 25 years.

In fact, when OPI released a coffee table book to celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2006, they named the slick and glossy pictorial I'm Not Really a Waitress and hundreds of other names people can't stop talking about! This books shows how the original ad had a model in a diner waitress uniform with long red nails reading a movie script. But not every one who wears this color wants to be a starlet. It's a cheerful, neutral red that works with most skin tones. It would be a rose by any other name, but this playful ad spoke to beauty consumers by the masses and lead this hue to cult classic status among nail"philes" who affectionately refer to it as INRAW.

I feel like such a dork when I go into a nail salon and usually grab a bottle, look at the name, and realize I own INRAW and wear it all the time! I think despite the cult status it really is a great color.

FYI, Sally Hansen's No Chip 10 Day Nail Color in Endless Claret is an exact dupe of this (I have both, and I see no difference on the nail whatsoever), and it's only $4. I like the formula, too--very smooth and long-lasting.

I may be alone but I do not like this color. I think it is too bright - maybe it's OK on the toes.

Thanks Patti. This book was on clearance at Ulta for a long time. I'm not sure if you have access, but you still might want to check or hit up eBay :^)

Also, another dupe of INRAW is Orly Crawford's Wine.

I have never liked this color either. Too car-door glittery for me. I think OPI makes some much better colors.

I love this color - it's one of the few reds that works on me!

And thanks for the tip, Theresa!

I never knew popular nailpolish from dirt then, but I wore this color all through high school, naturally gravitating toward it on the salon shelf every time without having to check its name on the bottom! (It was always fun to be asked what I was wearing, since I did do theatre then.) I'm tickled it's a cult classic; makes total sense to me!
