40 days and 40 Nights Of Beauty Cult Classics
Day 18 , Child Perfume
It should come as no surprise that Child has made it onto the cult classics list. It is beloved by celebrities and raved over in magazines. Style.com endorsed it as a cult classic fragrance last year.
It became a "sought after scent" when Jennie Garth from Beverly Hills 90210 proclaimed it to be a "man magnet".
It was sold out for months.
It was rumored that the creator hand poured each bottle. I am sure the fuss created by Jennie Garth's comments enabled her to hire a staff or just made the hand pouring 1000 times more enjoyable.

The oil was originally housed in a very plain roller ball bottle with an Apothia sticker to identify it. Today there are may retailers who offer the scent in their inventories.
Child is a simple pikake based scent.
There are other notes in the mix such as gardenia, jasmine, and honeysuckle. They manage to make brief appearances through the drydown.
But the center stage is dominated by the pikake note. It is coppertone-like but without the creaminess of Monyette Paris or the fun aspect from Bond's Fire Island.
I am a fan but it is not very complicated or unique.
Many friends swear by just wearing a pikake oil straight from the head shop. They claim the effect is the same but without the heavy price tag.
What do you think?
Is Child all hype or is it a must have for fragrance lovers?

Hi Annie!
I think Child, although quite pretty, is rather overhyped.
By the way, I took the liberty to link your post to mine on Perfume Shrine (3rd March 08). Hope it's all right!
No problem PS! I am honored.
I am a fan of Child but I tend to agree. It is funny how Jennie Garth put this fragrance on the map. It makes me wonder what teen queen could have that power today....Miley or one of the Gossip Girls?
Oh, I remember the mad rush for this! Wasn't there a waiting list at Fred Segal or something? By the time I finally sniffed it (years later), I could believe it was so ordinary.
Hype, hype, hype!
Here's something interesting--Susan Owens lives across the street from my parents in Dallas. She does not have a large staff, she has not hit the big time. Apparently, she just has fun at what she does and is a very down to earth person. This is all according to my parents. I've not met her. :)
cool, try my new site:

Child has been sold for 18 years, Jennie Garth comment did get people to try it, but you can't make a woman buy it twice regardless of what Garth said.
If only celebs wore it, how could the creator stay in business?
Her web site press is definately current.
Ms. Owens not hit the big time?
She was Miss March 1988 with Playboy,(my brother is her biggest fan)
a registered nurse
a publisher of her own comic character Flaxen with May 1993
in Playboy doing a feature pictorial on her comic
A model for the famous painter Olivia (Dark Angel)
She gave up Hollywood to follower Christ and get her soul back she told a reporter in Dallas.
I have never had a perfume dry down so beautiful on me as this one.
Child is a love or hate perfume.
No inbetweens!
