Serge Lutens Beaute Nail Lacquer

Would you pay $65 for a nail polish?
Mr Lutens thinks so.

Sang Bleu is a classic red and Faux-Semblant is a sheer nude with a natural finish.
These are available at Barneys in NYC.

To answer the question, NO! And the colors aren't even pretty.

I'd rather have 32 Sinful polishes from the drugstore and have a buck left over, too.

All of the Lutens makeup is so ridiculously overpriced, has he lost his mind?

I bet there are some people who are buying these, though.

Mr. Lutens might think so, but I disagree. A $65 nail polish would have to apply itself, last perfectly through countless washing of dishes and remove itself without a trace when I command it. I doubt this polish can do that, and the colors aren't that unusual either.

oh dear! that would have to last a year on my fingers (without chipping) to pay a price like that!

At 8:38 AM, Blogger kingshearte said...

I work in a bookstore, and my nails invariably break and/or have any polish I'm wearing chip within about five minutes of starting work. If a polish could last me through a week at work, I might pay... half that. If they were nicer colours with a nice shimmer to them.

Wasn't there an 80s rap song about "don't believe the hype?" Maybe from Public Enemy? Well, that just came to mind.

That is a lot of money!
So...heck no!

I agree with the Sinful polishes
if they update their colors a bit faster.

No way on earth!!!!

I love many of the house's fragrances and they're definitely worth the money, but the makeup prices are just insane.

No way!!! That is ridiculous!!! LOL

Do you remember the scene with an office girl instantly changing her nail colour with a little pen-like devise in "Total Recall"? That's the kind of stuff I expect for $65.

I almsot posted on these too when I got that book. It is over the top for polish . But I agree with whoever posted that someone is buying them. I bet they are.
China Glaze rules for me.

I pay 100 euros for my Serge Lutens perfume and I think it's ok, but for a nail polish!!!!! However, I'll go to take a look at this costly color.

At 12:10 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I bought the expensive Serge Lutens eyeliner, and I was really happy with it. It's the most expensive makeup item I ever bought (that and Armani foundation, which is far less amazing than this eyeliner). what's great about it? it's beautifully packaged, it makes for a ritual, and most importantly, it's idiot proof. I've never been able to apply eyeliner well in my life until now. I know how to apply nail polish! - hvs

I may be crazy but I don't think I'd ever be that crazy. I do like the packaging. Maybe if it stayed on for a month, did it's own touch ups and dried in 2 seconds and did my laundry I'd consider it. Dinner... it need to take me to dinner too.

At 1:15 PM, Blogger Mina24 said...

To answer: no way in the world. i could go to cvs and buy 10 polishes instead.

A friend of ours worked briefly with SL in his earlier days and described M. Lutens as eccentric. I think he just marches to his own creative drummer and whether or not $65 is a sane price point for nail polish (which it clearly isn't) just doesn't cross his mind. I would love to see the profit margin on this, though.

The red is quite pretty but no, if I want a taste of luxury the SL fragrances are still the way to go for me. **sniffs her Cedre**

Only if Mr. Lutens comes to my home and gives me my very own mani pedi.

He then must swear on a stack of bibles that the color will not chip for a whole month.

At 10:42 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Feh. Only Serge Lutens would dare to make Chanel polishes look positively affordable. And just how would this "luxury" product compare performance-wise to OPI?

Im actually curious to see what this polish looks like on. The price is a bit ridiculous but hey Carrie has a shoe fetish and I have a makeup and skincare fetish. From the limited edition Chantecaille palletes to a Kate Somerville skincare binge, it's just well....my thing. In the SATC show Carrie went gaga over a classic pair of black Manolo's when she was working for Vogue. They were a "urban shoe myth". Makeup can be similar, it's not always over the top colors and finishes that garner lemmings. Im not saying I will buy it, Im really interested in the Chanel LA polishes, especially Melrose and Rodeo but I can see why a person would buy the SL polish. If anything, it's a little luxury that can make the wearer or collector feel good. Unlike Manolo's a perfect polished toe will go everywhere with you and is even comfortable to wear to bed. Call me wacky but thats just me, and my makeup junkie two cents.

That is shocking! There is no way I would ever pay $65 for a nail polish, and as patti said, the colours aren't even nice!

I'd rather go to 8ty8beauty and get 10 OPIs delivered to my door in Australia!

(and I'm willing to bet that there is little quality difference between an OPI polish and a Serge Lutens polish!)

While luxury items may make someone feel pretty, how pretty will they feel when they drop over a week's worth of gas on nailpolish that almost certainly chips within three days? It would be one thing if the colors were one-of-a-kind gorgeous and fresh (and even then it would be overpriced) but these colors look like something I could get from an infinitely cheaper brand.

Absolutely preposterous. There's no other word for it.

Thanks for the comments.
I am a fan of the Lutens fragrances but have been disappointed with the makeup line. I expected the world from him since his ads with Shiseido(remember those?) were so stunning. I thought his makeup would be like Nars...but on acid.

If anyone tries the polish...let us know.

yeah freakn right, for another freakin red and nude? u could buy these colors in wet n wild 2 for $1. SL's a freakin moron out of his mind. at least carrie's obsession was more unique than red nailpolish.

I have not yet tried the nail polish and I agree that some of the things are overpriced: The Lipstick and the nailpolish, for instance, at 75 and 65, respectively are not worth it, imho.

However, I just came from Barney's this weekend and fell in love with some basic products: The foundation, in the $150 range, is a brush on powder that gives flawless coverage and is dummyproof in its application. No more smearing on the oily stuff! No more greasy blending! No more pasty face! Further, the eyeliner and mascara are completely run-proof and simple to apply. I dislike wearing makeup whenever possible, but the SL products give me the barest essentials - great coverage and precise definition. I barely look like i'm wearing makeup at all after, and it is exceedingly simple to apply.
I do regret purchasing the eyeshadow (not worth it) and will probably return it.

SL is worth the money for essential items, but colors, which I like to rotate on habit, are better purchased on budget.

I 'm in love with the Serge Lutens makeup line, I bought the Sang Bleu nail polish (the dark red color is beyong stunning), the Beige lipstick and the Khol. The packaging is the most luxurious on the market, nothing exceeds it, it 's a makeup ritual that makes a woman feel special just as expensive shoes from Miu Miu or Louboutin!

I guess I am the lone dissenter in this blog. I tried the dark red color on today and I love it. My body chemistry is such that OPI and some of the others do not stick to my nails. The Serge Lutens seems to be doing just fine. I will give it a few days to see if it wear well. If so, I might be purchasing. I am really pleased with the color, shine and smoothness. Oh, that is just with one coat. I was told by the salesperson that it is a 4-in-1 deal. It dried quickly, too.

I am not sure if my comment "took" the first time, so I will repost.

I was saying that I may be the lone dissenter on this blog, but I actually might buy this nail polish. I just tried on some today and I LOVE it. I have had thyroid cancer and my thyroid is gone now. My hormones have always been weird, but now they are really weird. So, nail polishes tend to not adhere to my nails. This polish, with just one coat, slid on, and it is sticking. The color is wonderful! And, the shine is, too.

I will wear it for a few days to see if it chips soon. If not, I'll be purchasing a bottle.

At 4:48 PM, Blogger ballgown said...

I soooo purchased a bottle. I LOVE IT! It stays on and it was easy to use. It is a four-in-one. No need for a base coat, top coat or quick drying spray.

Word to the wise - If you use this in a salon, please do not sit under the ultraviolet heater to dry your nails. This polish dries best in open air; just sit still for a few minutes (as it dries quickly) and let it dry. The heat from the heater causes it to bubble.

I went to Barney's in San Francisco 2 days ago for the first time, knowing full-well it was a mini Neiman Marcus as far as extremely overpriced stuff. Well, as the sweet lady was trying to sell me on everything under the sun,I noticed her gorgeous red polish, "Oh, we sell it here!" Thinking that this might be my cheap way out to get a cute little Barney's bag, rather than buying the perfume she was showing me, which I was sure was $500, I agreed to buy the polish. A very well dressed guy came down to ring me up. I am thinking in my head "well, it will probably be $25, but what the hell, treat yourself!" Then he casually says "that will be $71.25." WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?? of course at this point, what could I do? So i bought it and my friend I was with laughed her ass off the rest of the day....

I bought the polish and had it applied on Saturday. It is the smoothest, finest, most beautiful polish I have ever had on my nails. It looks like glass. The moment my friend saw my nails, at lunch, she said: "I have to have that polish." I know it's crazy to buy nail polish for $65, but the bottle is going to last a year, so that's $1.25 a week.

Haircuts cost more than $65 and last a six weeks.
