Yves Saint Laurent 1936-2008

The most beautiful clothes that can dress a woman are the arms of the man she loves.
But for those who haven't had the fortune of finding this happiness, I am there." (Yves Saint Laurent 1983)

Another one of the greats. And look how young and chic he is in that second photo!

I remember visiting the retrospective exhibition of his work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I was a pre-teen at the time, and I was spellbound by his designs.

I'm glad you posted this, Annie.

Love that picture of Mr. Saint Laurent with Betty Catroux and Loulou de la Falaise. You've obviously read The Beautiful Fall!

I'm saddened by this news. To me, he was and is the most important designer. I admire his talent and vision. As a child I remember being mesmerized by the iconic letters screend onto an Opium bottle, the one that looked like a japanese box. It was mythic.

An interesting aspect about artists' work is trying to understand the reasons why they do what they do. Yves Saint Laurent was very revealing when he spoke about that. There is just so much to admire.

There is no item higher on my own "impossible lemming" list than a bejewelled coat a-la Ballet Russe. It surfaces every now and then as an interpretation, an homage, in hands of capable designers, tipping its hat to that which came before.

Thank you for the quote.

Ah, my non-existant French is far worse than I care to admit. I meant to write Ballets Russes, of course. (I did have to look it up afterwards. Apologies)

Stanzi: I have always loved him.
I think it was his bashfulness mixed in with greatness. You could not help but adore and root for him.

Anon: I have!
And Betty was such a fox.

Anon2(Cherryglass): I loved that quote. It really got me.
