40 Days and 40 Nights of Lip Service
This is the fourth annual 40 days and 40 Nights series on Blogdorf Goodman. The gang will focus on lip products for the next 40 days.
Patti and I have been discussing a lipstick series since the beginning of this blog. I think we put it off because it would be difficult to accomplish. The subject matter is so broad and vast. We could do reviews on lip glosses for 365 days and still not make a dent in our collections. This year with the struggling economy and the Lipstick Index, we decided to go for it. The Lipstick Index was coined by Leonard Lauder in 2001. During that recession, lipstick sales increased by 11%. It is widely believed that during difficult economic times, cosmetic sales increase. Lippies are generally considered an affordable luxury. This economic crisis is putting the lipstick index theory to the test. Current cosmetic sales are not a shining beacon of hope. However, we see glimpses of future lippie love. Lavender Whip from MAC sold out quickly at the counters. Dick Page produced a much buzzed about 20 piece lipstick collection for Shiseido. Armani released new Sheer and Shine lipsticks. There is growing excitement over the Dior lipstick collection(rumored to be 20 pieces) along with Dolce & Gabbana's Dahlia lipstick.
During these next 40 days there will be reviews, polls, blurbs and general trivia about lippies. We plan to discuss everything from lipsticks to lip plumpers. There will also be gushing over MAC Dazzleglasses and Poppy King. I most likely will mention Lancome's Behnaz Red lipstick at least once during the series. That is a given.
To start the series we will begin with a poll to test the Lipstick Index.
Have you found yourself purchasing more lipsticks or lip glosses these last few months?

I have purchased more lipsticks this last month than any other beauty product or article of clothing. The last lippies I purchased was another Lavender Whip from MAC along with Hello Kitty's Big Bow. I also purchased Guerlin's KissKiss Liplift primer.
I blamed this purchase on "blog research".

Yes! I caved on a Chanel lipstick, several MAC lipsticks, and several MAC lipglasses.
I am so excited about this series!
Oh, definitely lipsticks. I'm no longer a lipgloss girl, I've decided. My favourites are EL pure color and pure colour crystal, Chanel rouge allure and I am loving my new Shiseido rouge perfect in almond pink!!
I've definitely been on a lip kick lately. One MAC lipstick and two glosses, two Dick Pages, a YSL Rouge Volupte, and I have my eye on a few others. It won't be long!
Now that you mention it, I have bought a lot of lip products this month. From MAC: Lavender Whip lipstick, All's Fair lipstick from BBR, Strayin' lipstick from HK, and Pure Rose lipstick from Emanuel Ungaro. Also got a Stila lipstick in Diane, and a Revlon Matte lipstick in Strawberry Suede.
Hi Annie,
I have purchasing lip gloss. Last one was "Big Bang Lip Gloss" from The Lipstick Queen. Its fabulous! Did you try it yet? I first learned about that gloss at this blog when you met Poppy!
I've purchased several lippies in the past month, in fact I've been quite obsessed with anything and everything lip related for the last few months, so I find Lauder's theory quite interesting :) I'm normally a blush / highlighter / taupe e/s kinda gal. Anyway, in the last 30 days I've acquired: Lancome Pixel Pink, Chanel Satinette, 3 from Mac's Cremeteam collection & 1 from HK, 2 Shiseido Perfect Rouges, 3 Chante lippies, 1 Givenchy Rouge Interdit, 2 Nars lippies, and *gulp* 6 YSL lippies. Omg, thanks for letting me overshare.
Yay! I love the series each year and this is a great topic. I haven't been buying lipsticks (or lip products) lately, as I feel much guilt for my untouched stash, as well as my barely used in rotation stash. All I want right now is sheer, non shimmery lipsticks, yet I am daunted by the prospect of sifting through pricey misses. I have a few that fit the bill, but I want more More. Can't wait to hear more about Poppy King Saints! I will be here daily, for sure.
I didn't realize it, but yeah I have been buying more lippies than usual. In the last couple of weeks I bought YSL lip twins in Coral (the pretty tube sold me), Chanel gloss in Vanilla, and one of Dior's new spring colors that I can't recall right now.
I actually have too! Interesting. I've recently purchased MAC's Lavendar Whip, Fashiom Mews and Fresh Brew (from HK). Yesterday I was in the drug store and grabbed Nivea kiss of shine gloss and 2 of Covergirl's new lip stains. This theory might just be true.
I don't know if anyone was a
YSL Rouge Personnel fan. They've
been discontinued,and I've
never really recovered!
Anyone have suggestions?
They were balmy, full
of pigment, but slightly
matte.
Fun. Look forwrad to each days entry.
I have bought a few lip balm type things lately( tinted, etc) but thats it. Not because there isn't anything fab to buy but because I have loads of pretty ones to wear.
I did buy an eyebrow gel from MAC, does that count? and the MAC counter and store last weekend was mad busy. A good sign.
I'm a lipstick girl at heart, lipgloss will never come close to my love and addiction to lipsticks. I never leave the house without lipstick and I like red. ;)
I'm hyper excited with this new series. Can't wait. :)
I have bought a lot of lip products these last few months, but I don't think any more than usual. In fact, I would say it's about the same or less... But I'm an exception; I don't spend much on luxuries anyway, so makeup was one of the first things to get axed.
Totally! I had plans on buying some fancy stuff, but ended up just buying the lip sticks and glosses from HK w MAC. For some reason I'm less enthralled with eye stuff and more with lip stuff. Also, nail polishes are catching my eye more, $7 is an awesome price for an instant pick me up!
I'm so excited about this series! Lipsticks/glosses are my favorite makeup items, I think. I have a ridiculous amount (seriously, I think we're talking in the triple-digit figures).
I can't say that I've bought more recently than before -- I've bought a lot, but then I always do :).
My most recent lippie purchases were MAC Lavendar Whip, one of the new Shiseido lipsticks, and four of the new Estee Lauder gloss lipsticks. I'm also looking forward to the seven new Chanel Glossimers coming out in April.
Can't wait for this series, Annie!
Amazing! I haven't bought a lippie in ages since I have so many but this month I bought a Dior Addict High Shine, and Chanel Wild Rose Glossmier (pure love I'm telling you). I am waiting anxiously for the new new Chanel glossimers too!
I recently purchased my first real lipstick (I'm seventeen)...Chanel's Rouge Allure in Audace!
So I guess that's a yes.
I have definitely been buying more lip products lately. They have mostly been drugstore buys, but I did get MAC Lavendar Whip and the Ever So Rich Gloss. I am so excited about this series!
I've purchased all 3 Chanel lippies from the Le Noir collection plus Rouge Noir/Vamp (this is my first one ever!), 3 HK x MAC lippies, and I got a deluxe sample of one of the red lippies that Dick Page created for Shiseido. This after I swore up and down that I'll never buy lipstick ever again!
Yes! 2 lipsticks and 2 lip liners (Chanel and MAC); 1 lip gloss (Chanel), and a lip balm all within the past 2 months.
Hey! I'm really looking forward to this series! :)
I purchased Lavendar Whip and two Creme Sheen glosses, one of which I immediately lost dammit! And all other purchases for me are down, way down. I am on an otherwise cosmetic no-buy.
I meant to also comment that during WWII, women came up with all kinds of beautiful hairstyles, apparently due to an inability to afford lots of new clothing. I don't know the data on this, but a friend mentioned it today and I find the parallel between your blog and her comment intriguing.
It's funny, even though my overall spending has been down I've purchased more lip products in the short span of 2009 than I normally do in that period of 2 months. I bought a Vincent Longo Lip Vinyl, Tarte Lip Sheer, and Cover Girl Outlast Lip Stain. There might be more that I can't remember...
Yep! In the past six weeks, I had a wee windfall and got two Nars lipsticks and four (!!) MAC lipsticks. Four of the six colors are different shades of red, too.
I'm not sure about lipsticks. I did buy more this year than in years past- but I've always been a gloss girl and the lipstick purchase was because I needed something that would stay on at my new job and not leave me reapplying a million times a day. I DEFINITELY have bought more makeup this year, and cut back on clothes. Probably because makeup in general is cheaper, so I feel like I'm getting more bang for my buck. I can give myself a "makeover" much cheaper with cosmetics than clothing.

I'm guilty of the "blog research" myself. I also talked myself into purchasing all 7 new BECCA lipsticks, site unseen, because I knew the color on their swatches were off and lets face it-- I can't pass up the BECCA! Two new Fresh Sugar glosses made it into my collection (love these) as well as a few other lipsticks and glosses.
I'm so happy we are testing the Lipstick Index. I find it fascinating. I know in other bad economic times there was something to do with hem lines. I can't remember but off the top of my head it was bad times = lower hemlines, good times = higher hemlines. Someone let me know if I have that right.
Oh, I am going to love this one!
Yes I have been buying more -our cold, dry winter has caused me to shift almost entirely from regular lipstick to glosses, balms and sheer lippies that comfort my lips all day. Even if I wear a creme lipstick I will put gloss over it.
