The Bitter End
Prescriptives will close in 2010
It is always a sad day when you discover a beloved brand is shutting their doors. I have never really gotten over the demise of Tony & Tina. My friends mourn the loss of the Stephane Marais cosmetic line like a family member. Every fragrance junkie worth their salt feels a sharp jab when they think about the great Gobin Daude. That one slays me every time.
This weekend we found out we are losing Prescriptives.
This weekend we found out we are losing Prescriptives.
Estée Lauder Companies announced today that it would close the global wholesale distribution of its Prescriptives brand by January 31, 2010. The brand plans to continue to sell online for United States shipping at www.prescriptives.com to help service consumers for replenishment of key products, while inventory lasts. Prescriptives products are currently sold in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia.
Prescriptives did not receive the love it so richly deserved. They had superior skin care and eye shadows. The line created such masterpieces such as Magic Powder. This is a finely milled powder that felt wet upon application. It was slightly creepy but with luminizing, opal-like results. I just fell in love with the Quick Remover. With just two swipes my smoky eye was gone and buried.
The Prescriptives counter at Bergdorf Goodman was the place I received my last great makeover. They created and mixed my custom foundation. As much as I love my La Mer and Kanebo....Prescriptives gave me the very best skin match. The MA also stated that I did not need much makeup. Clearly, the man fibbed beautifully. It was such a sweet and kind gesture that I have never forgotten.
Prescriptives Calyx fans...do not fret. This email was in my inbox this weekend.
As most of you know, we made an important announcement yesterday regarding Prescriptives. For those of you who have been supporters of the brand, we wanted to personally reach out to you to let you know that the Prescriptives fragrance Calyx, which is a favorite among consumers, will continue to be distributed through Aramis and Designer Fragrances and sold at the fragrance bar in select fine department stores and online beginning February 1st.
So this week...I will be paying tribute to Prescriptives with reviews that are much too late.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the team and all Prescriptives counters across the country.
Let us know your favorite Prescriptives products in the comments.

I still can't get over the shock of learning about the end of Prescriptives. I've been a cheerleader for this line for so many years. I've raved so many times about the Holiday Palettes that I am sure people are sick of hearing me go on and on about how great they are, and what a wonderful value, too. The texture of the shadows is silky and creamy, and the blushes are soft and subtle.
I guess I'll be heading to the counter soon to stock up on refills for my palettes. At least they will continue to offer Calyx, which I'm wearing today, thanks to Tania's review in her book Perfumes The Guide. I would never have tried this delightful scent if it weren't for her five-star recommendation.
I really like those little chubby foundation sticks since they're handy to carry around for mid-day touchups. I've also bought their Line Preventer several times.
I haven't bought the brand in years, but it saddens me to hear this! My first real makeover, when I was 16, was Px. And during Spring Break 1995, my friend and I went to Henri Bendel to get makeovers by the famous Darac. Many of our friends were getting drunk in Cancun, but that for us was the best Spring Break ever! I am so sad to see them go!
HALLELUJAH! Right up to the "bitter end" of your post I was mourning what would be the loss of one of my all time favorite scents, Calyx, but just in the nick of time you saved me!! Thank the heavens above Calyx will stick around! But I'm so very sorry for the other Prescriptive products people will be missing. Very sad!
Camouflage Cream and Pressed Powder Leaves are daily staples. The gel eyeliner in eggplant is beautiful. The mulberry lip balm, the old Rain Gloss, lipsticks. What a big bummer there'll be no more Px. Theirs was the first foundation I was able to find a color and formula match with 15 years ago. As they changed formulas by including silicones in the oil free foundations, I wasn't able to stick with them for foundation. I wonder if they'll still have the new Holiday 2009 palettes. The red case and colors look nice.
I should acknowledge here the genius of the line's co-founder, Sylvie Chantecaille. Of course there are raves over her own line of cosmetics now, but she gave Prescriptives its personality and quality.
All Clean Fresh Foaming Cleanser. It's the ONLY facial cleanser I've used since 2001! For this reason I'm distraught over this news...I need to start stocking up soon!
I never bought any Prescriptives until recently, so I just now am getting into the line! What a bummer. I really like the cream eyeshadow pot in Smoking Gun, a glorious and complex taupe.
I am so very saddened by this announcement. My very dear friend is the manager of the Prescriptives counter in the Macy's where I am an SA and is absolutely revered by her clients. She is trying her best to keep up a good face, but she has managed the line for 8 years and is near retirement age and does not know what will happen to her. Please keep your prayers with this great lady. Although I work for another line, the custom blend events they has every January used to be my favorite! I adored watching the SA's mix the different colors of powders, foundations and glosses, it was like the coolest chemistry experiment ever!!!
What will i do without Magic powder? Sigh. Please let me know if there are any good substitutes for that powder.
Prescriptives false eyelashes mascara is a great product too.
Definitely Magic Powder. And their compact cream foundation--the name's escaping me--was the first one I ever bought years ago. I'm sad to hear this news.
Prescriptive has long moving itself out of Malaysia due to poor sale. I am not that surprised at its death. I feel bad though as I really like its inovative colour matching scheme. you can always get your colours matched or else they make it for you. I guess the market is going toward cheap and easy makeup so this brand is a rare breed and this hard to survive with the vast competition oout there. many woould rather sacrifice quality but opt for cheaper reproduction or higher quantity. I guess the world economy isn't helping much at the moment either. Sigh...
I am shocked but imagine Estee Lauder is shedding anything that's not making big bucks. Anyway, the Virtual Skin Foundation was always my favorite product. It had a lovely, milky texture and was probably the best color match I ever found in a foundation. And I wore Calyx when I was a teen so that always brings back memories! - Twizler
I'm not suprised it's closing - sad yes.
There are too many lines today, even drugstores, that offer great make-up. Px almost never offers a gwp, except on rare occasion and online. I do have enough mascara samples to last me until 2020 by which time I imagine I won't be wearing mascara, lol. Their m/u really is expensive, and the e/s are small. In the EL family, there's great competition in BB, EL and clinique, all of which have improved greatly in the last few years (even BB needed some improvement). And of course MAC. I wish they'd get rid of origins, or combine them! I liked calyx like 100 years ago, i meant 20 years ago, but am really way over it. it's too darn GREEN.
I love Magic, have used it off and on since it first came around. Their foundations are some of the best, I do hope they can get worked in with the other lines.
I bought an e/s palette years at macys and it was ridiculously expensive for a small amount. It's my first recollection. maybe 1986? I always hate the whole color family thing, no one ever got me right.
Buh Bye prescriptives. they could never get a handle on you to make you work. you coulda been a contender for even longer....
I blame the current oval office resident for this lol.
I hope world hunger gets the same attention that m/u does one day...
Every single time I got "colormatched" at a Prescriptives counter, they decided i was a different color. I did not have good luck with this brand at all, and I don't know anybody who uses it on a daily basis (only people who say they used to). I think that's why they're going out of business! Anyway, for those of you mourning Magic powder, the Awake brand has a doppelganger.
Sève Exquise ... Sève Exquise ... sob. xoxo
Mireille: I know!
It slays me everytime. I walked passed the table at TAK with her stuff marked down. I was too busy socializing.
Her line was just....exquisite.
Shannon: Awake has a powder like Magic. It comes in a variety of shades too. I have a lovely pink color.
Tussah: OMG
How did I forget to mention that? That is a fab mascara.
One of the best...really.
NOOOOOOOOOO! I love my camo cream concealer. I also thought the Virtual Skin was a damn good liquid foundation and have been toying with going back to it after a 3-year sabbatical to explore BE mineral makeup. Thank you for the information, but I really feel like cursing out the world right now. This sucks!
Melvis: It does suck.
It was a great line.
Throughout college I wore this one purple/brown/vamp lipstick shade. It was during the grunge era.
I wish I could recall the name.
That was my first Prescriptives product.
I have a Px shadow brush that is perfect that I bought 25 years ago--how amazing is that!
I, too, got color-typed as blue-red and red-orange-which is it guys?
I think it was that I am quite neutral. Anyway, I loved Magic Powder, but got too old and pore-y to wear it well.
Sic transit gloria...
