Turn On Your Bright Lights: Part 2
Day 28: MAC Lightful Charged Essence Serum
by Annie
I am very late to any kind of gushing over MAC's Lightful skin care line. MAC Lightful was an Asian exclusive that started appearing on the US shores in 2009. Clearly, I was in some kind of cave in 2009. I do not remember any whispers or shouts concerning the release. I stumbled across a treasure trove of product at my local MAC free standing store. I purchased the toner and this serum under the guidance of my SA.
The serum's texture is odd. It feels slippery and slightly clammy. It leaves you with the impression that you might have grabbed your hair gel instead of your skin care treatment. This was unnerving. Just one dab or dollop from the silver pump and it covers the entire face. It dries quickly and leaves the skin feeling tacky. I ignored this and applied my moisturizer over the serum. This is when the "magic happened".
The serum appeared to reach out and grab the moisturizer.
It took over 30 minutes for my moisturizer to settle before I applied my foundation. My skin was hydrated to the point of dewiness.
I also tested this serum over my primer. Then I applied my foundation. Crazy results. My foundation is flawless. No wear or tear after 8 hour work day. No slipping issues.
MAC Lightful serum is available online at http://www.maccosmetics.com/
It retails for $40.

I can't wait to try all of it!
I don't know about you other ladies, but I don't have 30 minutes to let my moisturizer settle before putting my foundation on. When you used it with your primer, did it take as long before you could apply foundation? The tacky texture and long wait before you can proceed with make-up is probably why that particular line never really took off like some of the other brightening/lightening ones: Shiseido, Clinique, Vevite, etc.
Hi C! I saw on a MAC artists twitter that there is a foundation. I do not know if it is an upcoming release or more asian exclusives.
Eileen: I spotted on twitter this one MA mentioning that they used the serum after the primer. I thought that was odd...but damn... it works. It seems to be very primer-like in its hold. It holds moisturizer, primer or foundation. It is less treatment-like and more a work horse.
I understand the 30 minutes is way too long to wait. Most would have just slathered their foundation on. I waited for it to dry. I was stunned that my skin stayed that hydrated for as long as it did. It could be a curse or a benefit. Depends on the wearer.
I will say that this is the best whitening product I have used so far. I have gone down 1 shade in my foundation. Shiseido did not work for me.
What is Vevite like?
I've just started using MAC Lightful Foaming Creme Cleanser and so far it seems pretty nice. Too early to tell about any whitening or tightening effects.
Eileen - I always put my moisturizer on the moment I get out of the shower, so while I'm drying/styling my hair it has plenty of time to absorb. Just something to consider!
Thanks for the info regarding the primer then serum application. It sounds counter to logic because you usually want to put serums close to your skin so that you can get the greatest benefit from the actives. But, I'm an old dog willing to learn new tricks :-)
Vivite Vibrance Therapy is a lightening serum that is recommended by a lot of dermatologists because it combines a high level of glycolic acid with a plathora of lightening agents. I've been getting excellent results with it--beter than with the Clinique, PTR, and SkinCeuticles that I've tried. The key, though, with any of these is patience.
