"I've told you a million times not to talk to me when I am doing my lashes"

I don’t even know you Annie but I thought of you yesterday when we were shooting a pilot for a new show based around a clothing designer who splits her time between New York and Shanghai. The shoot went well and she is a talented and charming person, but the memorable thing about the day was not the shoot but the scent I noticed when I got off the elevator on her floor that morning. It was the smell of a girl I had loved and lived with for five years … and who is still often in my thoughts. It was the soft musky smell of Paris and her apartment there and our shared apartment in Manhattan that she filled with her things and their accompanying aromas. The subject of our shoot was a lot like her; they are about the same age, are single, talented women who have seen the world, collect fine art and furniture and know their own minds … Scent is such a powerful marker – I don’t know exactly how it works on my brain but it summons up more than just the person who wears it, it also reconstructs context and the texture and feel of our shared experience.

Hi Berlinhound!
Please ask her what scent she is wearing. Most of the ladies/gents that post here are from the fragrance board at makeupalley.com. We are pretty much obsessed with all things fragrance. The first thing I thought of when I read your post....
"I wonder what scent she is wearing"?
BTW: I hope your pilot went well. It sounds like something I would love to watch. There are no good fashion based television shows except the reality show Project Runway.

So everyone: What do you think the fragrance is? Lets post our guesses.

Hi to Annie and Berlinhound!
This photo is beautiful. Her comment reminds me of Bette Davis' famous line, was it Now, Voyager? She says "I'd like to kiss ya but I just washed my hair!"

I have no idea what fragrance Berlinhound smelled yesterday, but I am wondering if it could have been Lovely by SJP. The lavender is prominent on my skin. BH, did you and your former love have lavender in your apartment?

"the soft musky smell of Paris ..." Vol de Nuit, I say.

"Dinner at Eight" is way up there for me, too. My favorite scene is the knock-down drag-out between Beery and Harlow: "Politics? Ha! You couldn't get into politics. You couldn't get in anywhere. You couldn't even get in the mens' room at the Astor!"

Annie ... I am not sure that what I was smelling was a particular product ... I am inclined to think it was a combination of things; a box of Dyptique candles stored in the hall closet, a huge flower arrangement on her desk comprised of lavendar and rosemary, perhaps a bottle of Chanel No.5 on her bathroom shelf? I will ask ...

Berlinhound:
Maybe it is Serge Lutens Encens et Lavande.

Your description of what it could be would draw "ahhs" on the makeupalley board.

For some reason I think it will be one of the classics from Guerlain or Caron. Just a gut feeling!

Ahhhh--Whatever this scent is, based on berlinbound's description--I want to bathe in it. Delicious.
I have no idea what it could be, but I am thinking along the lines of Annie--a classic Guerlain.

*wistful sigh*
I shall spend the rest of the day dreaming of the smells of Paris.

Annie ... These are the two scents she uses ...

Jo Malone’s orange blossom cologne and Comme des garcons Incense Avignon

Best,
Richard

Hi R!

I was 100% wrong. LOL

I wear CDG's Incense Jaisalmer. I personally would love to own each and every one of the CDG incenses. They truly are the best. Avignon smells like the Canterbury Cathedral in England. Very crypt-ish and wet earth. Of course I instantly fell in love with it!

Jo Malone fragrances are good but not long lasting at all. The best orange blossom is by Serge Lutens.

I am going to mix the Serge Lutens and grab my vial of Avignon tonight and see what it is like! I will report my scent findings tomorrow.

Annie ... One last item on this post ... My former love wore Guerlain - Samsara (I hope I spelled that correctly) Just to be complete ...
Best,
Richard

Hi R-

I tested the CDG and the Orange Blossom by Serge Lutens. It was excellent. I never would have thought of mixing those fragrances together. The woman is a scent genius!

BTW: I have been calling you berlinhound by mistake. Parisjasmal(monkeyposh) brought it to my attention. I apologize. My only excuse is that I am a scatterbrain.

Annie ...

You are forgiven, I noticed it too and got a kick out of it.

At he risk of being repetitive; your's is one of the most enjoyable and well produced blogs I have come across. I just wish there was something like it for menswear and accesories. I genuinely look forward to using your posts for Holiday gift ideas ...
Best,
Richard

I will do holiday gift idea posts(I have started to collect pictures) and plan to do a male fragrance day. I was thinking that would be fun.
