This is a compact from my collection. I bought it at the Goodwill Auction. I was scrambling to get aurora borealis anything when I stumbled across this at the watch table. I was so proud when cavewoman proclaimed it a find. It was not the find of the night. That honor goes to my friend Sandy who scored a vintage diamond watch.

This compact is a Schildkraut. It has never been used by any hands. No powder has ever graced its contents. According to cavewoman it is a guilloche compact. According to Wikipedia(my new haunt) guilloche is "an ornamental pattern formed of two or more curved bands that interlace to repeat a circular design, most commonly seen on banknotes."

That was a night to remember, Annie! It was worth the bruised shoulders.
Guilloche is more of a translucent overlay of enamel, laid on top of some kind of metal that is 'worked' into a pattern. The surface is smooth but the metalworking (often in swirls or another type of pattern) shows through. Your compact has a decal too. It's absolutely beautiful!

Mireille, guilloche is a pattern worked into the base metal, with a very smooth enamel surface over top, that just shows the pattern underneath.
Cloissonne is a wire application over the base metal, with the enamel in between the wires. The wires show at the surface. It's more like "coloring between the lines" and the wire is often worked into floral patterns, then the colors placed inside the wires. HTH!
