The Beautiful Fall
I can not put this book down. It is about the beginnings of Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent.
Here is a snippet from Pat Cleveland:
"I was wearing a blue gown which Karl had given me; it had first been worn by Marlene Dietrich. It was transparent and it had twenty-five yards of fabric and it was pleated and nude. When I had my arms down you could not see through the dress, but as soon as I walked into the room I put my arms up and it became transparent. I moved through the room the way Isadora Duncan would have moved, thats how I entered La Coupole for my first drink of champagne in Paris at aged twenty-one. I was with Karl Lagerfeld, Antonio, Juan and everyone started applauding and I knew I had arrived in Paris. I felt like a dove released in the world of fashion and I sat down and all the waiters came over and offered me champagne and I ordered a steak au poivre. I didn't know which fork to use, but Karl knew which fork to use even though he didn't eat."
It was "even though he didn't eat" that got me.
This book is called The Beautiful Fall by Alicia Drake and it is a great read for anyone who loves fashion. If you hate Karl Lagerfeld....this is also the book for you.
