Love's always been my game...

A review of Lancôme Rouge in Love and Vernis in Love
By Jessica M and Angie W

Annie has been curious about Lancôme’s spring products for a while, so she when she shared her invitation to Lancôme’s launch of its new Rouge in Love (lipsticks) and Vernis in Love (nail polish) lines, we were happy to attend the party and report back to her.

Lancôme held its event at the jewelry boutique of cult designer Solange Azagury-Partridge on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. The shop is a gorgeous little space, like a combination of Aladdin’s cave and a private nightclub from the 1970s. It has red walls studded with tiny crystals, a rainbow-patterned carpet, and shadowboxes and vitrines displaying colorful, unusual pieces of jewelry. Showstoppers include the Zodiac inspired ring collection; Angie had her eye on an white enamel Aries ram’s head ring. Jessica couldn’t take her eyes off a glamour-Goth ring of tiny white-gold “bones” surrounding a shimmery, diamond encrusted skull.
Between admiring the gems, sipping complimentary champagne, and nibbling caviar hors d’oeuvres, we were offered lipstick applications by Lancôme makeup artists who chose colors for us. Lancôme has divided the colors into three categories: Jolis Matins (M) for classic daytime wear, Boudoir Time (B) for trendier looks, and Tonight is My Night (N) for glamorous evenings out.

Angie was dressed up in Rouge Valentine, a classic blue-red pin-up shade (185N). She was also intrigued by Cocoa Couture (292N, pictured), a deep, chocolate wine shade that would have suited Theda Bara, and Midnight Rose (377N, pictured), a vibrant fuschia that will look gorgeous for spring and summer.
Meanwhile, Jessica was matched with Roses in Love (353M, pictured). Its muted-bright medium pink brings a fresh glow to the face, so she’ll be wearing it well into 2012!
Rouge in Love’s colors appear matte in the tube, but they apply with a silky finish and a slight sheen. Their texture feels like a lip balm and the color has terrific, even coverage. The packaging is a little bit contemporary and a little bit retro: the matte silver cap has a line of red “stitching” running down the back, like the seam of a stocking!

Lancôme also gifted its guests with free Vernis in Love manicures at this party. Angie gravitated towards Vernis in Love in Rose Thé (350M) a muted, brownish pink, while Jessica fell for Rose Plumetis (300M, pictured), a cool-toned rosebud pink with a creme finish. Angie also admired Madame Tulipe (179M), a deep reddish wine, and many women at the event adored Rose Pitimini (343B), a vibrant cotton candy pink. The polishes apply smoothly and easily, thanks to a specially grooved and tapered brush, and two coats give full coverage that lasts for days.
Overall, the Solange boutique was the perfect setting for trying Lancôme’s romantic, lushly colored new lipsticks and polishes. Have you seen Rouge in Love or Vernis in Love in person yet? Have you found any favorite shades for this spring? Feel free to share in the comments!

Lancôme Rouge in Love ($25) is available at the Lancôme website and Lancôme counters. Vernis in Rouge ($15) is currently exclusive to Nordstrom and the Lancôme website; it will reach all Lancôme counters in May 2012.

I Love New York by Bond No. 9: A Review

I Love New York by Bond No. 9

Bond No. 9 is starting a new fragrance series in their collection. After the great success with the collaboration with the Warhol Foundation, Bond is partnering with the I Love NY brand for a series of 15 fragrances. This series will center on scents inspired by the Empire State. I have no idea what future scents are planned but the idea of a Hudson Valley or Catskills fragrance sounds appealing.

The series begins with three fragrances. I Love New York For Her (Pink Bottle), I Love New York For Him (Blue Bottle) and I Love New York For All (Black Bottle). I have been pledging my allegiance to all three fragrances during the labor day weekend. My first favorite was I Love New York For All. It is wildly quirky and compelling. It is a gourmand that centers on coffee, cocoa, creamy chestnut with a drydown of patchouli and vanilla. The overall effect is a cup of coffee with a dollop of thick cream and chocolate. Traditionally delicious. The drydown takes a turn into green pastures. A mixture of hay or grass. The ending  note is all about leather.  Buttery soft.  The whole thing is kind of a weird and kooky perfection.
Promise me that you will give this scent a whirl.

I Love New York For Her is the crowd pleaser at my job. The ladies love feminine fragrances. Anything that veers masculine is given the "side eye". The notes for this fragrance is mandarin zest, spicy nutmeg and the boldest blueberry note ever captured in a fragrance. The middle notes are just a cornucopia of pretty. It is a bouquet of roses and pink peonies. The drydown is patchouli, musk, vanilla sandalwood and a naughty touch of leather. The lasting power of the blueberry note is much too brief. I wanted it to last forever.

I Love New York For Him was a runaway hit with the men in my office. They have tested fragrances for me in the past. But never have they bickered over who would keep the lab bottle. One co-worker offered me $25. I laughed the offer off. He proceeded to stare me down in a bullying way. The opening notes are ginger, juniper berry and grapefruit zest. It is a bright green. Peppy and full of energy. The middle notes are a lavender(soapy), geranium, patchouli (rooty) and leather. The drydown is a cloud of sandalwood, labdanum, musk and amber.

The lasting power for the three fragrances are good. I have found I Love New York For Her to be too fleeting on me. It lasted splendidly on my co-worker Gela. This made me jealous. I Love New York For Him was a smash with drydown and silage. The bully co-worker got compliments from men and from women. I Love New York For All has a very powerful drydown. You will smell chestnut and coffee all day.
Price points for the 50 and 100 ml. eau de parfum will be $105 and $175, respectively.

I LOVE NEW YORK by Bond No. 9 arrives on counter September 18th at Bond No. 9 boutiques, Saks Fifth Avenue and select Nordstrom stores. The limited edition, charm 100 ml bottles will be $255 each. These bottles will arrive November 1st, 2011.

Kiss Me, Kate

A review of Kate Spade Supercalifragilipstick
By Jessica M and Angie W

Poppy King, the Lipstick Queen, is sharing her talent and knowledge in several collaborations this year. She has created a signature lipstick for J. Crew, a range of seven lipsticks for the Boots no. 7 makeup line (soon available in the U.S.!), and a set of four lippies for the design house Kate Spade.

The four shades in Poppy’s “Supercalifragilipstick” line for Kate Spade are Pop Art Pink, Fuchsia Fete, Bashful Blush, and Adventurous Red. They all strike a nice balance between classic and trendy, just like Kate Spade’s clothing and accessories.
Angie has been wearing Bashful Blush, a versatile "your lips but better" shade. This is the perfect color for anyone who wants a muted, slightly brownish pink for daytime wear. It goes on with just the right amount of pigment and a subtle sheen, right out of the tube. It looks especially beautiful with Angie’s coloring: she is a pale brunette with blue-gray eyes.

Jessica has been trying out Pop Art Pink, a richly pigmented shade that looks almost hot-pink in the tube. It can be dabbed onto the lips and patted in with a fingertip for a sheerer look, or applied in a stronger swipe for bolder color. Jessica, who has dark brown hair, brown eyes, and pale skin, has been complementing Pop Art Pink with a little bit of rosy blush.
Thanks to Poppy King’s expertise in lipstick formulas, Supercalifragilipstick has a creamy texture and good staying power. Last but not least, its packaging has a fun mechanism: you press the top down gently, instead of pulling it, and then the tube pops open by itself! The swivel-up section is marked “PUCKER UP,” which makes us smile...all the better for applying lipstick.

Supercalifragilipstick will be released in early September and will sell for $24 at Kate Spade stores and the Kate Spade website.

Blossom Dearie

A review of Essence Cosmetics “Blossoms etc.” Limited Edition Collection
By Jessica M

Essence Cosmetics releases several Limited Edition seasonal
collections per year, and the offering for this spring and summer in
the United States, called Blossoms Etc., is my favorite yet. It
features “gentle pastel shades and floral designs,” with the good
quality and low prices that Essence is known for.

I’ve been impressed by Essence’s nail polishes for a while, and the
Blossoms polishes live up to my expectations for the brand. I’ve
tried Forgot-Me-Not, a lavender-blue crème that reminds me of the
Periwinkle crayon from the big Crayola crayon box. (It looks more
shimmery in the bottle than it does on the nails.) I wore two coats
of Forget-Me-Not as my manicure last week and received several
compliments. The other shade I’m testing is I Like, a mermaid-y green
that dries to a cool seafoam crème (with very discreet shimmer) on the
nails. Like Forget-Me-Not, it lasts well and it’s eye-catching in a
fresh, soft way. ($1.99 each)
The eyeshadows in the Blossoms Etc. collection are duos: the darker
shade is a well-pigmented matte shadow, and the lighter shade is
shimmery and sheer. Bloom-a-Loom is the lilac/pink duo, and
Forget-Me-Not is the purple-lavender duo. I usually stick to neutrals
for my eye shadows, but these colors are flattering and not overly
bright, so I’m able to fit them into my everyday “look.” ($2.49 each)
And wait, what’s that interesting-looking compact peeking into the
corner of the photo?
Here’s a better look at Flower Power Multi Colour Powder, an embossed
mosaic of pink, peach, nude, and light bronze shades. It has fine
shimmer, so it’s a perfect finishing touch for cheekbones or temples.
I always admire high-end embossed highlighting powders and blushes,
but I rarely buy them, because I know I’ll end up hoarding them at the
back of a drawer. This powder is priced so affordably, however, that
I can use it without guilt. ($2.99)

And what spring line would be complete without a pretty lip gloss?
This shade is Flowerkissed. I love its carnation-pink color. This
gloss has a doe-foot applicator and applies smoothly for a creamy,
moderately shiny finish. ($1.99)

Blossoms Etc. was released in May, and this line of May flowers will
be around only until supplies are gone, so if you’re curious, do check
it out soon!

Essence Cosmetics is available at Ulta stores, the Ulta website
(http://www.ulta.com/), and Fred Meyer stores (in the Pacific Northwest
region).

Spring Fling

Some new products from Essence Cosmetics
A review by Jessica M

About a year ago, I reported on the United States launch of Essence
Cosmetics, a German beauty line that has turned out to be one of my
favorite bargain brands. I was especially impressed by Essence’s
mascaras (All Eyes on Me and Multi-Action are my favorites), blush
brush, and nail polishes, and they’ve all gained permanent places in
my makeup drawer.
I was recently invited to another event hosted by Essence cosmetics
and I had a chance to revisit the line and try some more products.
One new item is Stay With Me Long-Lasting Lipgloss ($2.29), offered in
seven crème shades that start with lots of shine and gradually wear
down into a tint of color. Candy Bar (coral), Trendsetter (cherry
red), Me & My Ice Cream (light pink), and I Like Cotton Candy (rich
berry) are all perfect for summer wear, and they would suit a range of
skintones. (I particularly like the contoured doe-foot of the gloss’s
applicator.)
Essence also recently added lipsticks to its offerings in the United
States. It’s hard for me to ignore any lipstick (especially one that
retails for $2.49), and Essence’s lippie is available in ten sheer
shades, all with shimmer, that range from cool to warm. The three
that worked best for me were Kiss You (baby pink), Look at Me (bronzey
nude), and Fairy Tale (deep mauve). Their plastic cases match the
shades inside, which is a nice touch. I’m also constantly on the
lookout for sweet and simple neutrals that suit a fair complexion, so
I was happy to try Essence’s Lipliner in Soft Rose (99 cents for a
high-quality pencil) and nicely milled Silky Touch Blush in Adorable
(a very light peach, priced at $2.49).
Essence’s Colour & Go Quick Drying Nail Polish colors (99 cents each)
are on-trend, long-lasting, and unbelievably affordable. Some of the
newer shades that caught my eye were updated neutrals like Date With
the Night (futuristic charcoal shimmer) and Irreplaceable (pale
putty-gray with gold shimmer) and the more colorful Choose Me! (bright
teal with holographic glitter) and Where Is The Party? (holographic
purple with green).

Essence is also continuing to release several limited-edition “trend”
collections per year, and I’ll be back soon to review the latest one
available in the United States. It’s one of my favorite “trend”
releases yet, and just like the products I’ve already mentioned, it’s
completely spring-worthy.

Essence Cosmetics is available at Ulta stores, the Ulta website
(http://www.ulta.com/), and Fred Meyer stores (in the Pacific Northwest
region).

40 Days and 40 Nights of Fragrance Notes: Gourmands

Gourmand fragrances are any scents that are "foodie" in nature. These fragrances can smell like a decadent cupcake or a crisp fall apple. I have a great appreciation for a dark chocolate note and anything with gooey marshmallows. Coffee adds a great jolt to a fragrance dry down.

Kilian's Love Don't Be Shy is a spongy, sweet confection of a fragrance. The inspiration is the marshmallow. Love Don't Be Shy is a bold sugary minx.
My first impression was that it was a great homage to Guerlain. There is a heavy Shalimar influence. Love Don't Be Shy might be sweet but there is an undercurrent of mystery. There is a metallic honeyed Neroli note with a fairly grand Sambac Jasmine. There are appearances from Rose and Iris. The dry down is a great buttery vanilla with a cloud of musk. The sillage and lasting power is strong in this Kilian.

The queen of all the gourmands is the legendary Thierry Mugler's Angel. It is chock full of sweetness. The gourmand notes are dark chocolate, caramel, coconut and cotton candy. I wore Angel throughout the 90's. It was an odd choice to pair with Doc Martens and vintage 1940's dresses. I loved its unique charm. I also loved that it was challenging to find in Ohio. I had to drive to Cleveland's Saks Fifth Avenue to purchase a bottle. Today you can find a bottle of Angel at your local Macys Department store and Wal-Mart. Angel has spawned many copies and tribute fragrances. It also inspires great love or hate among fragrance junkies. Angel will always have a special place in my heart. It was the fragrance that accompanied the best years of my life.

Donna Karan has a series of fragrances that are inspired by the apple.  All worthy and accurate.
But the best apple fragrance is Molinard's Caramel Pain d'epice.  It is all kinds of apple cider with a dollop of cinnamon. Gorgeous and perfect for the beginnings of fall.

Review: Bond No. 9's Madison Square Park

By MUA's Cavewoman

It is no secret that I have been ranting about our terrible Winter since the beginning of December when it wasn't even officially Winter yet.We started getting snow and bitter cold around that time. I think I've seen the grass on our lawn maybe twice since then. Every day, wondering if I could get out and run errands, drive to my Zumba classes, or get myself over to my Mom's house, it's been depressing and too, too long. The park across the street from my house is bare. Brown limbs attempt to reach for bits of blue in the sky, they seem heavy and tired, too, as if longing along with us humans for a little sun, maybe a leaf of crocus popping through what seems like a thick crust of ice piled everywhere along the pathways. We wear black. Or maybe gray. We wear our heavy-hitting scents because they seem right in the cold and dark. We try to cheer ourselves up with a bright scarf or a new lipstick, but we're tired. We want some Spring and we are beyond ready. I'm fortunate to live within the city, for all that is good and bad about it, it's still home. But I am even more fortunate to have Mill Creek Park right across the street. Within a few weeks, I'll be seeing joggers and runners, dogs happy that their owners can finally take them for a run, elderly people with a bit of a spring (Spring!) in their step. Little children on their bicycles, brighter clothes, spirits lifted, flowers blooming and trees budding. And the scent of freshness in the air. We will gladly store away our dark clothes, and our dark scents, and reach for the colors and scents of Spring.

Greeting Spring in proper style, and honoring a beautiful park in another city, Bond No. 9 will soon present its latest New York City neighborhood tribute, Madison Square Park. Created by one of my favorite perfumers, Laurent Le Guernec, this newest Bond scent is Springtime in a bottle, from its hot pink "dress" to its pretty bright green flowered necklace! The scent itself is as bright and happy as the bottle itself. Balancing perfectly between its floral and green notes, when I smelled the scent I totally understood the bottle design. What I loved most about the Madison Square Park fragrance is what makes it different from any other scent I own. Immediately on the skin, all the notes are present. From the dry grass notes to the florals of rose, tulip and grape hyacinth, to the lush teakwood and vetiver root, it is as if the park itself, as you see it all at once, is completely present from start to finish in this perfume. Imagine yourself in the park, with the trees, grasses, and flowers in your view. Imagine all of those things together at once, in a scent. That is how Madison Square Park feels to me. I'm so amazed at how the perfumer was able to capture this in scent. Madison Square Park is not a green rose, it's a rose, with green. It sparkles with brightness and freshness, and at the same time, it has depth and personality. I can't stop smelling my wrists!

Spring is 17 days away. I'm hoping that the crusty ice of our miserable Ohio Winter will soon melt away, along with the long dark days that came along with it. I can't wait to see the tips of the tulip leaves push through the earth and show their promise of the beauty of Spring to come. I will wait eagerly for the launch of Bond No. 9 Madison Square Park, on April 15th. I want to slip that flower collar onto my wrist ( a shout out to the fabulous Shawn who designed the flower bracelet-pin!) and head out into the park for a long walk in the fresh air. Thanks, Bond, for reminding us that even though it's been a long Winter, we'll soon have a gorgeous new Bond scent to celebrate the return of Spring!

Notes for Bond No. 9 Madison Square Park:
Grape Hyacinth, Huckleberry, Prairie Dropseed Grass, Red Leaf Rose, Red Hunter Tulips, Hoptree, Teakwood, and Vetiver Root.

Tinted Love

A review of five tinted lip balms
By Jessica M

There’s a new generation of tinted lip balms showing up in stores these days, and they have wearable colors, soothing moisture, and more natural ingredients than we’ve seen before. To mention just a few: Korres and Burt’s Bees have added new products to their already-adored lip offerings, Tarte has introduced new shades and improved its packaging, LUSH is just getting started with color cosmetics, and Clark’s Botanicals maintains its status as a beauty editors’ favorite.

Here’s how these lip tints stacked up in my own late-winter testing. (I tried to choose colors that work with my own fair, cool/neutral skintone.)

Korres Lip Butter Glaze
Shade: Raspberry
Pigmentation: medium
Texture: smooth and glossy
Flavor: berry-vanilla
Packaging: tube with slant-tip
Price: $14 at Korres.com and Sephora.com
Verdict: feels lush and almost curative on lips, delivers good color pay-off in a health-conscious formulation

Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm
Shade: Pink Blossom
Pigmentation: sheer
Texture: very emollient
Flavor: fruit gum
Packaging: swivel-up stick in cardboard case
Price: $7 at drugstores and Burtsbees.com
Verdict: the most traditionally balm-like of the group, gives a dewy look with fresh, subtle color

Tarte Cosmetics 24.7 Natural Lip Sheer SPF 15
Shade: Tea Time
Pigmentation: semi-opaque
Texture: almost matte
Flavor: light mint
Packaging: swivel-up stick (with metal tube)
Price: $16 at Tartecosmetics.com and Sephora.com
Verdict: a pretty, polished effect, like a lightweight lipstick with the added benefits of moisture and sunscreen

Clarks’ Botanicals Ultra Rich Lip TintShade: Rachel Red
Pigmentation: medium
Texture: shiny
Flavor: vanilla ice cream
Packaging: tube with slant-tip
Price: $19 at Clarksbotanicals.com
Verdict: a bit streaky in its application, looks like a vibrant gloss but fades and slips away quickly; works best as a top coat over lipstick

LUSH It Started with a Kiss
Shade: one color available
Pigmentation: medium and buildable
Texture: semi-stain
Flavor: apple spice cake with buttercream frosting
Packaging: pot with screw-top lid
Price: $6.95 at Lush.com
Verdict: looks scarily bright in the pot, but applies as a flattering (and on-trend) coral-red... and lasts through a coffee break or an actual kiss!

Gaga 2: MAC Viva Glam's Lipstick and Lipglass

My mama told me when I was young
We are all born superstars
She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on
In the glass of her boudoir

"There's nothin' wrong with lovin' who you are"
She said, "'Cause He made you perfect, babe"
"So hold your head up, girl and you you'll go far,
Listen to me when I say" (Lyrics from Born This Way)

The latest addition to the Viva Glam lineup was launched yesterday. Lady Gaga has reprised her role as the Viva Glam spokeswoman. This time Viva Glam is all about the nude. This goes with her whole new album/Grammy's performance "rebirth" theme. There are no eggs or rubber pancake hats. This collection is about holy grail nude lippies. The amplified lipstick shade is a light warm beige. The lipglass is a gorgeous pinked beige with just a hint of shimmer.
Warm or pinked nudes are the only ones I can carry off!

Viva Glam Gaga 2 lipstick is priced at $14.50
Viva Glam Gaga 2 lipglass is priced at $14.50
The collection is available at your local MAC counter and www.maccosmetics.com
These shades will be available for a full 12 months. Each cent of these lippies goes to the amazing MAC Aids Fund.

Zoya Intimate Collection

Zoya's Intimate collection was designed to "recreate the custom looks developed for and inspired by the runways of New York Fashion Week - Spring 2011."

The collection is my kind of take on spring. It is moody and whispery pale. It is all kinds of Heathcliff and moors.

Zoya is available at http://www.zoya.com/ and the bottles retail for $7 each.

Marley is a slightly murky lavender pink. Very delicate and pretty.
Dove is a delicate, pale gray cream. This is my current manicure color.
Caitlin is a misty, moody, gray violet cream. This is my personal favorite from the collection. It is romantic and twisted like a Bronte sister's novel.
Dannii is shimmering, slightly metallic orchid purple. It is the perkiest shade in the Intimate collection. This shade also had the best staying power. Not one ounce of wear and tear after one week.
Jules is metallic, muted taupe with flashes of gold.
Gemma is an army green with flashes of periwinkle. The cast is very subtle.
