40 Days and 40 Nights of Beauty Cult Classics....
Day 3, Shu Uemura's Pressed Eye Shadow ME Brown 850
Hunting Down a Shu Silver ME 945 was an impossible task. My hands almost scored one at Takashimaya in NYC. The last one slipped through my fingers by mere minutes. Those type of beauty moments can be almost painful. Every gush on Makeupalley delivered a painful stab in my wounded heart. I felt like I had missed the boat on this cult classic.
Then Shu launched ME Brown 850. This was rumored to be an exact replica.
It is not.
The difference is the depth and oomph factor.
However...I was willing to take what I could get.
Once again it was a challenge to score one. At first glance it looks fairly innocent. Not the kind of shadow that would cause a brouhaha. On the eyes it transforms into something special. This is not your ordinary taupe.
This is a mushroom shade with pewter flashes.
Shu shadows are superior in pigment and texture. They feel and apply like velvet.
Lasting power is outstanding. There is no fading or turning.
The color stays true even without a primer product.
Shu can be found at Takashimaya in NYC, Bergdorf Goodman, and Barneys. I love the Shu staff at Barneys(they give fast and fab makeovers) but Bergdorf's area is so well stocked and lovely.
Visit the Shu site for some lovely spring MU porn....
The pressed shadows retail for $20.

Let us know in the comments what you think of this eye shadow and if it is worth cult classic status.
I would love if owners of the original Silver ME 945 would weigh in.....

I have both and must say that I agree. The new replacement lacks that extra depth and oomph factor. Nonetheless, both are very beautiful indeed! A must have for taupe lovers!
i have the shu both the M brown and the irrisdecent brown. and i agree with you on the amazing color and texture!!!
It's so hard to find a good taupe eyeshadow and these are definitely worth the hunt and the price.
i have both, and i also bow down at the altar of shu uemura (RIP).
me silver 945 is amazing, and i will be sad when mine is gone (i've the pan already :( ).
however, me brown 850 is a nice replacement... it just lacks the silver-ness of 945. i also love me brown 851, which has more green in it, but mixed together, the two offer a lighter version of me silver 945.
as for the new versions, the packaging sucks even more, but the forumla is way better. (i don't know why it took me so long to buy a palette!)
nordie's online also sells shu, but rarely do they have the free shipping that shu does. but different selections for sure.
I had the original Shu ME Silver 945 and I swapped it in the end. It was a beautiful color but I felt it made my eyes look crepey and weird. I have big eyes and what I have been told as great lid space but trying to wear this never really worked out for me. I know the person I swapped it to was very happy to get it and have it look unused (I was honest I had used it a few times). For me this went frosty on me and I never feel comfortable in frosts.
I later had remorse and bought the new version you have and I still found it to have too much shine for me still. I can't remember the differences but if pressed I'd say the new one is less shiny and less silver but still not for me.
I go to Barney's for makeovers just because I wasn't sure if I belonged in Bergdorf, without some form of $40,000 handbag...but maybe it's worth a spin to see the Shu set-up there.

Sadly I live in a small town(almost)and there is no place I can find shu:(
I have the 850 and so far, my eyes look amazing in it so is a good thing! Another personal favorite of mine is Barbuda by Nars, it has a hint of purple in it, blends well with a lots of colors!
I have the me 850 and I have tosay Ilove this perfect mushroom shade. I never owned the 945 so I can't compare them personally, but from what I've heard the new formula does lack the silver tone. Still it's a wonderful shade. I also have the ir 850 and the me 851 and I also like both of them. They're like a paler version (ir 850) and a greener version (me 851). If I had to own just one it would be the me 850. But all shu eyeshadows have the most amazing texture and color trueness and payoff.
I had ME brown 850 - gorgeous, complex color - the only shadow that has never faded or creased on me. However, the color unfortunately looked like bruising on me, so I had to give it away. I want to try the other metallics. Gorgeous texture.
