Day 23, Shu Uemura's Eyelash Curler
Once upon a time there was a girl with short, stubby and lackluster lashes.
She dreamed of having lashes that held a curl and were fabulous.
She went through life suffering the indignities that short lash people go through. The girl knew that one day a dashing gay man would come and make her lashes sweep to the heavens.
As fate would have it, she met her "Lash Godmother" while wandering the beauty floor at Barneys in New York City. She loitered at the various makeup stalls looking for an answer or a cure.
A young dashing man at the Shu Uemura counter took one look at her and felt inspiration.
He was about to make all her dreams come true.
He snapped her lashes in a medieval looking device called an eyelash curler.
Little did the girl know that this is what Shu was known and famous for.
When he finally produced a mirror the girl was startled to see lashes that resemble fans. They swept upwards to the angels and the saints in the sky.
The curl was tight and secure.
The girl was so grateful that she whipped out her credit card and bought every product used in her transformation.
Today the girl attempts to replicate that magical moment every day in front of her mirror. She stuffs her cursed lashes into the contraption and gives a good squeeze.
The girl has never achieved the results and magic of that fateful day at Barneys but her lashes are not as sad and frumpy.

I love, love, love Shu eyelash curlers. My lashes aren't really short and straight, but Shu still does a great job of curling them.
The Shu is a very good eyelash curler (I don't know if it's the best, I haven't tried them all). I recently bought a Sonia Kashuk eyelash curler at Target and found it's better - doesn't pinch the corners of my eyelids and doesn't pull out lashes. My problem with the Shu is that you can't buy replacement pads - you have to repurchase the whole thing when the pad wears out. You can make any eyelash curler more effective by warming it before use with your hair dryer. So can anyone recommend a mascara that will hold curl rather than pulling it out?
I don't have short & stubby lashes but long and straight! I'm looking for a eyelash curler and might have to try the Shu out.
I fail to understand why this lash curler is supposed to be so much better than the cheapie at the drugstore, but I am afraid of feeling ripped off so I never buy one and find out. It's £18 here! (That's $36, my friend.) Have you ever compared it to the downmarket versions?
I also have short and stubby lashes but Shu doesn't work!It pinches my eyelids. Why? Because I'm Asian! Since Asian eyes aer more "shallow" and flat, they don't fit the curve of the Shu eyelash curler. For my Asian sisters, I highly, highly recommend Shiseido-- when i went to sephora to buy a Shu eyelash curler, they recommended the Shiseido and it works like a charm!
I want to buy a eyelash curler since a long time ago (I like my lashes already, the way they are, but the curler will give them just the "perfect look")!
I am Asian too and I have the shortest, straightest, stubbiest eyelashes! I use the SANA Powerstyle Eyelash Curler (from Japan) available on Ebay if purchasing from the U.S. I don't know what it is ... something about the spring and curvature. It works wonders and did ridiculous things on my lashes. I can't imagine what kind of results it will produce on people already blessed with long, naturally curled lashes!
It is a rather medieval looking device! I LOVE the Shu. Fab post, Annie. xoxo
I highly recommend the Shisheido curler and it comes with replacement pads.
EoB from CVS fit Shu don't they? you don't really need to buy a whole new one
I'm Asian with the Asian lash condition and the Shu works beautifully for me. Could the issue for some be the technique? People talk about curlers all the time, but I've only seen photo tutorials in Asian beauty magazines. Once I have a grip on my lashes, I lift my arm until my wrist is almost at a right angle from my face. My friends move the curler along their lashes in a gentle "chomping" motion from base to tip. Certain types of mascaras also seem to undo the curl, which is why I haven't budged from using my blinc Kiss Me in months.
I've tried the curler and it does work but I hate having al that metal that I fear will catch my lashes and pull them out.
I have two plastic lash curlers, one that heats and one that does not, and I like them very much. I tend to forget to curl my lashes and rely on curling mascara like Diorshow and Givenchy Eye Fly but these curlers have a push button kind of mechanism and the pad is on a slide so it will not slip or move from the usual motion of forcing two metal pieces together in a pinching motion. They were very cheap too which never hurts (=
I've always been nervous about eyelash curlers -- something about a giant metal PINCHER coming up against my open eye isn't exactly comforting! But I did buy a Shu Uemura eyelash curler. I don't use it very often (I'm very lucky to have the lashes I do!), but if I'm really dressing up or putting on false eyelashes, I'll use it.
I've always wanted to use one of the little battery-operated heating comb curlers, as they look a little less "I'm going to clamp down on your eyelid", but I'm not sure how well they really work...
i used to use the shu curler for YEARS. one day i just decided to try the shiseido one...haven't gone back since. they're both great at their job, and i don't think one is necessarily better than the other. i think it just all depends on the person's eye shape.
I tried Shu and it pinched my small, asian eyes So I exchanged it for Shiseido's and I absolutely love theirs - so if your Shu isn't cutting it anymore I would suggest that one. Plus it comes with a replacement pad!
Finally, something I own on the cult list! hehe :)
The Shu eyelash curler worked really well on me! I have tried both this and the Shiseido one, and honestly, I much prefer the Shu. I have big, round eyes so maybe that's why the Shu worked better on me. The Shiseido curler doesn't curl all my lashes, but the Shu makes them so beautiful like a fan. The Shu only comes with one refill pad though and they don't sell refills, whereas the Shiseido one sells pad refills.
You really need your own magazine. I love your writing. I have a plastic eyelash curler from avon and one that was a free gift with cosmetics. I don't really notice a difference; I'll have to try the Shu.
Sansan
Doesn't do anything special for me. Works just like a cheap drugstore eyelash curler.
I have always wanted to get a shu eyelash curler because I too, have really stubborn short, straight lashes. This post has reminded me that It really needs to become part of my make up bag!
I'm completely devoted to the Shu eyelash curler. I've curled my eyelashes since I was 15, but had never used a high end eyelash curler until I finally bought a Shu. I find that I it takes much less pressure on my lashes with the Shu to get the same amount of curl from a cheaper one, which means I lose less lashes. After trying mine, my mom was hooked and replaced her old eyelash curler with the Shu, too! If you don't already curl your eyelashes daily, then it probably won't change your life. If you're as compulsive about curling straight lashes as I am though, I definitely recommend that you give it a try!
Sadly, I have never figured out the hype behind eyelash curlers. Every magazine and make up artist is totally all over the eyelash curler, and it just doesn't do anything for me! I don't really know what constitutes curly lashes, but maybe mine just have a natural curl, so eyelash curlers don't do much for me? I don't know, but as far as I'm concerned, they're all hype.
Hi, I love your blog!
I was wondering if you could insert my link on your site?

HYPE! after years of hearing how wonderful the Shu was and how lacking my eyelashes were without it, i bought it this Christmas. i am an obsessive eyelash curler so i was frantic with excitement to see the curl this magical cult object would give me! i unwrapped it, held it up to my bare lashes, and......found that it doesn't even fit the shape of my eyes. unbelievable! i thought that one of the Shu's major selling points was that it fit eyes so much better than all the rest?! because it didn't form to my eyelid and i couldn't squeeze close enough to the roots of my lashes, i couldn't even get a mediocre curl. i just don't understand, i have very boring, average shaped eyes that every other eyelash curler has been able to fit!?!? i'm much better off alternating with my metal NYC curler (purchased for under $2!!!) and my fancier Japonesque one. sigh.
I swear by this contraption. My lashes are long and straight, and with Shu, I can wear mascara without it ending up on the inside of my glasses. Weird thing though, the lashes on my right eye curl much more easily than those on my left. I have to hold the squeeze on my left lashes twice as long.
I need to try the Shiseido one!!!
The Shiseido one is so much better! After only having the shu for a few months (daily use), the metal had started to pry apart a little - but enough to rip out some of my eyelashes. I switched to Shiseido right away and I have never had a problem.
It is indeed as magical as people say. I LOVE my shu lash curler. I bought it with a shiseido one to compare the two. The shu fit my eyeshape better. I've also used a cheapie essence of beauty curler and an ELF curler. Shu is better. The shiseido and EoB pads fit the shu btw.
I am also completely addicted to the Shu eyelash curler.
For those of you who have had yours for a while, you should know that they've recently updated it a bit. You can tell the new ones as the eyelash pad has a slightly different shape. I think it works better but maybe it's just in my head.
AND they also have a mini one now!
I have the Shu eyelash curler...it doesn't do much for me, just like other curlers I have used. I've used a drugstore one, a Clinique one, and then this one....same results. And to the person that said their right eyelashes curl more easily...mine too! Shu does do some curl, but I find it doesn't stay. I have used mascaras that curl my long lashes better than Shu or other eyelash curlers.
