40 Days and 40 Nights of Beauty Cult Classics
Day 30 , Donna Karan Chaos

I am unable to review this fragrance. I have never tried it. It was long gone by the time I arrived on MUA's perfume boards. It was already a fragrance legend in the league of Catherine Deneuve. These bottles went for outrageous prices on Ebay and inspired dupes.
The old timers gushed over Chaos's smoke and woody charms. The newbies had to make do with Black Cashmere.
It is theorized that the notes in Chaos range from saffron to patchouli. Most fans can agree on the notes of cinnamon, incense, amber and woods.

What makes this discontinued fragrance a cult classic?

Last year a fellow muaer posted that she found a bottle of Chaos in her local TJ Maxx. The fragrance board had a visible meltdown.
There was congratulations, disbelief, envy and greed in that brief post.
That next week, all of us combed our TJ Maxx for Chaos bottles. None of us were successful.
To this day, we all still look.
It is like finding a Birkin bag at Goodwill or a Tiffany lamp at a garage sale....it ain't gonna happen.
But you still hope and dream for that big score.

If you have been blessed with sniffing Chaos let us know in the comments. Let us know what we are missing.

I've been waiting 30 days for this post! I am loving the 40 days; love this blog.
Chaos! In 1996, I was wandering the department store looking for that crystal shaped bottle I saw in a magazine. One ad said it had a note of cinnamon, so I had to see what that was all about. Well, one sniff and it had me. I bought a set of the edp and a body lotion. I'm not good at describing scents. All I know was that I instantly thought it was comforting, that I had to keep sniffing myself and all I needed was one spray to smell it on me for more than a day and even on my clothes after a wash.
Chaos had the honor of being my wedding scent. It didn't have any competition, as it was the only scent I was wearing. I think I finally ran out of my bottle in 1998 (possibly early 1999), only to be horrified it was discontinued and the counters no longer carried it! I lamented about it to my husband, who suggested looking for it on ebay (which I'd never heard of at that point). Wow! There it was! So many bottles and sets, for cheap! We ended up buying a 3.4 oz edp for around $35 and a set containing 1.7 oz edp, mini travel candle, an actual crystal on a leather string, and a 1/4 oz vial of parfum for about $45. Hubby said I should buy more, but I didn't want to be greedy. This was before I realized the value of hoarding a favorite discontinued item!
I still have part of the 3.4 oz bottle and all of the 1.7 oz bottle, and the parfum. I hand carried my Chaos collection through 3 moves and store it in boxes in my clothes closet. For being so 'old' the fragrance has held up perfectly. It makes me all the more impressed with the quality of DK fragrances. Now hubby tries to get me to sell my bottles since I've told him how much it goes for.
I believe once DK Beauty was sold to EL the fragrance was discontinued. I realize there is a dupe on longlostperfumes.com called Anarchy, but I've never tried it. There was a post on MUA a month or so ago that said DK was bringing back a collection of her best perfumes, which would include Chaos. This was a UK poster and I've been unable to find any other snippet about this.
I do not have a lot of fragrances, but I know what I like. Only recently have I discovered I like other fragrances, such as Bulgari Omnia and KenzoAmour. I'm looking forward to reading other DK Chaos posts!

This is the single most incredible fragrance I have ever encountered. I fell in love with it while still in High School... nothing has ever quite done the same thing to me yet. The way it combined with my skin literally had people following me around asking what I was wearing... I wish they would bring this back! And besides, the bottle was so incredible to look at!

To Cider and Beau and all Chaos lovers, I have it on excellent authority (a Chaos lover!) that the Anarchy dupe from LongLostPerfumes is a perfect dupe for the original Chaos.

And I believe my "authority" because LLP did a wonderful dupe of my beloved Deneuve (it's called Cannes) -- these scents from LLP are even better and closer to the original if you let them sit for a few months.

I believe that DK is re-launching Chaos this fall (2008); same juice, different bottle/packaging and exclusive to bergdorf's ... I cannot wait
