Drugstore Gem: Amlactin Moisturizing Cream

I discovered this miracle product at my local Rite Aid drugstore. I was searching for a solution to my dry elbows.
After just one week of use, my skin felt like a baby's bottom.
AmLactin Cream contains 12% lactic acid, neutralized with ammonium hydroxide, to form ammonium lactate that provides a cream pH of 4.5 - 5.5.
Amlactin delivers dramatic improvements with no skin irritation. It gently exfoliates and hydrates the skin. It solves any issues with Keratosis Pilaris and dry skin.
The price ranges from $12-$15 and is sold at Rite Aid, Walgreens and Drugstore.com
Amlactin is a tiny miracle in a bottle but there is catch.
It smells like window cleaner.

Let me know what you think of the product in the comments.

Disclosure: I purchased this product at my local drugstore.

I only recently discovered Amlactin too, from my dermatologist cousin. I have Keratosis Pilaris and Amlactin definitely *does not* cure it, but it does make it a little more tolerable. It's not working miracles, but it's working better than anything else I've tried (the only other thing that's come close is Avon's Moisturing Bump-Minimizer). I get my Amlactin from Costco. They have a huge bottle for $14 or $16, which is a fantastic deal!

I love Bag Balm and it works a treat for my dry, pealling feet, but it too smell awful.

AmLactin is a good choice for some KP sufferers but it is not a cure all. I found no improvement at all, DermaDoctor KP Duty is the only lotion I've found that works on my KP, but AmLactin is a good lotion for dry skin.

Haha it smells like window cleaner. That reminds me of the money My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and how the dad was convinced windex cured everything. Perhaps this is made of windex.

Amlaction is an excellent product that is recommended by dermatologists as an OTC assistant to Keratosis Pilaris. It definitely helps with KP upon regular use.

I have KP and my derm. recommended this as well. For me, this worked much better than the Derm Doctor KP Duty one. Def. going to check out Costco to see about the bigger bottle.

to CHENG-- i've never tried Amlactin but i have had some success using Paula's Choice Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA on the KP on the backs of my arms. it's not a total cure, but it has definitely helped. supposedly (or so i've read), the only thing that can actually help KP is BHA because it's the only molecule small enough or persistent enough to actually get INTO the pore and clear out the clogged hair follicle. if you're interested in learning more, try checking out Paula's Choice website, it talks more about it there.

Lachydrin (or Lac Hydrin) 5% is another great drugstore scaly skin killer, similar price range, but is not very sexy in color or smell. A doc recommended it years ago when I was having eczema problems and it was wonderful - I still use it on scaly skin, dry cuticles etc. Great stuff.

I'm definitely going to try this. I used the Dermadoctor stuff, and I was not impressed. The only things that's ever worked is some stuff by Neutrogena that they don't make anymore. I don't even think you can get it on ebay. :(

I second the Paula's Choice 2% BHA Weightless Body Treatment. It's like a thick-but-lightweight cream, but it's not very hydrating, so don't expect it to do anything but exfoliate -- but it works for that like nothing else on earth, I swear.

Amlactin, to me, does smell a bit of ammonia, but much more strongly of sour milk. It's just rank.

Usually ammonium hydroxide is coupled with lactic acid or glycolic aacid so it does not penetrate too deeply into the skin (which is what you want if you are trying to improve exfoliation on the surface). It also greatly reduces any irritation from AHA. It is an interesting approach as this product is basically like a coating protective cream that will help maintain a healthy PH to troubled, patchy areas while dealing with the exfoliation process in a non-irritating way.

I second Jennifer. It helps KP and is a much better deal at Costco. Actually I found it works best for KP if used daily with at minimum weekly exfoliation.

I originally read about Amlactin on Pete Townshend's blog way back when.(He also has dry elbow issues - Who knew? Heh.)

I've been using it on my heels and elbows and it's great. I do think there are different strengths though?

AmLactin is amazing. KP is a drag. It helped manage the dry skin from it. I am not looking for a sexy fix. Just a functional one and AmLactin is the best for dry skin.
