Hinoki by Comme des Garcons x Monocle: Scent One

I have always wanted to visit Japan. The dream started when I was a little girl and continues to be a strong desire today. This fragrance has managed to capture what Japan smells like in my dreams.

I dream that Japan smells like woods, wet earth, dry incense and thick mountain air. I have no idea if this is even remotely close to the real thing but this is my dream so places generally smell lovely and worthy of being bottled in a fragrance.

The notes are Cypress, turpentine(pine clean-like), camphor, cedar, thyme, pine, Georgian wood, frankincense, moss and vetiver. The fragrance is not a typical damp church-like incense but more dry and crisp. Even though the fragrance contains camphor and cedar, there is no moth ball effect.
The woods mixed in with the incense and vetiver deliver a quiet reflective fragrance. It calms your nerves. This leans toward the masculine side but it is a unisex fragrance. If you love incense fragrances then Hinoki is required for your collection.

It retails for $145 and is avialable at Luckyscent.

How strange that Monocle magazine has a scent...I get all dispirited and cynical when I see pairings like this, but it sounds like a great smell.

hmmm.

Annie--I went to Japan in July for the first time. It was amazing. I had been dreaming of going for a very very long time.

The smell of Japanese incense is the most beautiful thing in the world.

I hope you get to Japan. It is a planet, not a country. And that is a compliment ;)

I can't wait to go back.

Annie. How do you do it? I was just thinking about Japan today and how badly I want to go there. (I have never been) And then you post this. Your description is so lovely you almost had me buying that perfume un-sniffed! I showed some restraint but I'm going to be on the look out for this! Thanks for the review!

I loved living in Japan but the smell I remember most is truck exhaust.
