Hi Annie! I have the individual lashes and love them! The Shu "glue" is definitely better than other ones I've tried. I haven't tried a full lash yet though...so as you experiment, let us know what you run into!
Check out the "Makeup and Beauty Blog" Karen is the queen of false eyelashes.
those are so on my wishlist at secondcitystylee.com
let me know how it goes..take a pic
Hello Annie! I've been reading your blog now for months; I'm a beauty junkie myself and used to co-author a blog writing about, well all the stuff you do. ( it was taken down b/c the main author thought it was consuming her life- oh well.) The reason I started reading yours is b/c I am also from Y-town so you piqued my interest. Oddly enough, I also was sold at the Shu counter with "Madonna wears it"- lipliner, gloss, 2 shadows, liquid liner. Anyway, I can safely say that I am false lash expert. I have been wearing them on a regular basis for quite a long time. Here are your steps to puttinig on Falsies.
1. Go to the drugstore and buy three pairs of inexpensive lashes. Buy the ones that look closest to the shu ones. These are your practice lashes. Also pick up a tube of Duo lash adhesive. It can be removed pretty easily from your eyes and very safely from the shu lashes, as you will be able to wear them many times. The inexpensive ones are 1-2 uses then they die.
2. You will also need a lash curler, flat ended toothpicks, flat ended tweezers, tiny scissors, and patience.
3. Start with a pair of the cheap lashes . Cut them in half. It's easier to apply less lashes and take baby steps.
4. Curl your lashes. Squeeze a small (less than a pea) size amount of duo onto a scrap of paper. Use a toothpick to apply a thin line of glue onto the lash strip, holding the lashes by the hair part with the tweezers. Count to 15 so the glue is tacky, not wet.
5. Steady hands ready? Line the lashes up with the outside corner of your eye (still using tweezers) and gently move around a bit until you have them in place. Then with your other hand use a clean toothpick to push the lashes down and in to your own lash line.
6. Apply a super thin line of liquid liner to your lash line for concealment and 1-2 coats of mascara to blend your own lashes into the falsies.
Repeat all of this with the other 2 pairs of cheap lashes (don't cut them in half) and you should be good to go with your Shu's. Keep in mind Madonna has HUGE eyes so you will probably have to trim the Shu lashes a couple millimeters to fit your own eyes; trim from the inner corners. After you wear the Shu's, gently wash them with a mild face cleanser to remove mascara and pull off any old glue gently with tweezers. Store them in their own container so they keep their shape. The shu's are built to last, but I'm sure Madge wears a new pair every day ;) -- Goodluck!
these lashes look so perfect. how much were they?
it looks like gauntdenim has it down to a T- except i would reverse the step of applying the lashes and the liquid liner- i always apply the liner first as my guideline, and then apply the lashes on top of the liner. because sometimes applying liner afterward is difficult and bumpy over the falsies. please let me know if the shu's are worth the price- i'm a huge ardell lash fan, the cheapos!
Gauntdenim -- Thanks for this how to! I might even buy a pair and give them a go! Molly
Um... why would you want to look like Madonna?
Whenever you apply the glue, do so with a tooth pick, it allows you to have much more control over the application. Another tip is to apply mascara after placing the lashes (and letting them dry...) so that your natural lashes and the falsies blend together and look flawless! And one last tip is to cut off the inner third of the falsies, if you use the full sets, that way they look even more believable.
When all of that is put together, anyone can envy your lovely new lashes. The director of my dance company, a woman who has seen many a false eyelash and is tough to fool, was taken aback and totally fooled. It works!
I like the black lash glue best--mistakes don't show. Also, be aware that these might be too much for you, certainly for work and even for a night on the town. But that doesn't mean you should give up on falsies! The Duo brand individual lashes are something that give you some oomph and that you really can wear everyday.
I'm sure you'll have fun with these. Gautdenim's tips are very good, the only thing I'd add is you'll need to be sitting down with both elbows firmly on the table, looking down into the mirror. Good luck.
These tips are given based on personal experience -- your mileage may vary: (1) immediately buy the eyelash applicator tool from Shu Uemura (yes its $55 but it is SO worth every penny)and (2) apply the glue to your eyelid w/a slanted brush like MAC's #266 -- wait 20 seconds and then apply the lash (this is a tip from makeup artist Billy B.)Hope that helps!
I second Medina, I learned from Shu makeup artist to look down into a mirror while applying. The easiest would be a mirror on a stand that you can swivel under your chin. This helps stops you from becoming a big blinking mess!
Gauss, i was thinking the same thing...Madonna has stiff spider lashes!!
The tip I use when I apply false lashes is to open my eyes slightly. It keeps my eyes from blinking. Also, curl and apply mascaras to your lashes first will keep them from sticking out.
But I would not practice on the Shu though, as they are pricey. If I were you, I would let my hands wet with some Ardell lashes and practice applying falsies with them until I get the art.
Good luck and I enjoy reading your blog. If you want to exchange links, please let me know. I'd be honored to do so!
I've always wanted to try the Shu false lashes and have been too intimidated. I'll have to start with a set of cheapies and practice.
i'm still trying to learn how to apply falsies - keep us posted on how you fare!
