News That Will Make Hardcore Prescriptives Fans Fume
Estee Lauder announced that Smashbox will be joining their beauty family and empire.
“The Estée Lauder Companies is the ideal home for Smashbox,” said Dean Factor, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, Smashbox Beauty Cosmetics, Inc. “The Company possesses the scale and vision to help transition Smashbox into its next phase of growth, and its track record of nurturing and growing prestige brands is second to none. Moreover, we share a similar cultural heritage and dedication to consumer-inspired innovation and creativity. We expect to benefit greatly from The Estée Lauder Companies’ extensive knowledge in product development, operational execution, and international marketing and distribution, and we look forward to the next great period of growth for the brand.”

I have no experience with the Smashbox brand, but it's always a sad day when a mega company buys a smaller one. Employees will be let go and products will be made more cheaply, both done for higher profit margins.
Why get rid of Prescriptives when they had every intention of buying Smashbox?
Unbelievable. Dumping PX and acquiring Smashbox?
I am officially done with Lauder.
Well another company down the drain i have no love for EL cosmetics at all and i do not purchase any product they are associated with.

Brava: I hope and pray that is not the case.
I *think* it could be a great thing. I would like to see Smashbox at my local Macys. I also think that Lauder needs a better primer. JMO
Happy: I know of a few Prescriptive fans that are still reeling over the loss of their brand. This will be salt on their wounds.
Patti: I wondered if you caught the news! Did it post on Prescriptives facebook page?
flower: I am not going to fib....Lauder, MAC,my beloved La Mer all have a firm grip on my heart. But...Prescriptives had magnificent skincare and foundation. That business was sad and disappointing.
I hope Smashbox only flourishes. I would hate to see another brand leave us.
I love their gel eyeliner (it comes in a little pot and you dip your brush in) SMOOTH and glides on like magic.. I will be stocking on this JUST in case EL screws with the formula.
Even though I have to admit that since reading the review for the EL purple serum here (I forget the name) my skin has looked RADIENT!!!
Shrugs
...well there goes Smashbox.
I have a love-hate relationship with Smashbox. My biggest pet peeve is that Smashbox boxes together great product collections but most of the products in the box are made in China and you don't know they are made in China until you unbox the set. In my opinion, makeup made in China should only be found in mass market brands and not in what is commonly referred to as a prestige brand. Maybe Lauder will stop Smashbox from selling makeup made in China. Also I don't get the hype about the Smashbox primer, it makes my face t-zone extremely oily. I miss Prescriptives...sigh.
i think prescriptives wasn't doing well because of its high price tag. it was closed down in malaysia years ago. i think EL is targeting on brands that are cheaper thus will reach a greater range of customers. i can totally understand why. besides, EL has been labled as an old lady's brand for the longest time and by adding smashbox, a much younger image in the industry, it will help bringing in the younger crowds. i see this is more of a sales strategy than selecting products/brands based quality. (Not that I am saying Prescriptives has higher standards than Smashbox as I haven't compared the two.)
I don't see why not. If I were in charge of EL, I'd probably have to go with where the $$$ is.
Estee Lauder owns a lot of cosmetic brands. They own 27 different cosmetic companies including MAC, La Mer, Aveda, Bobbi Brown, Clinique, and Origins. It is sad that they are doing away with Prescriptives -- but that is big business for you. They are in it to make money. EL will probably elevate Smashbox to another level -- kind of like how when they took over MAC and they have a new line coming out every few weeks (which is kind of annoying!). Kinda sad that it comes down to money . . . but it is getting harder for the "little guy" to stay in business.
As someone who works for the Lauder company, I will say there must be major changes taking place within their organization. I work in a smaller Macy's and we have just been informed that employees who work for Estee Lauder and Clinique in certain stores will be taking part in a "pilot" program whereby we will now sell BOTH lines. However, the Business Manager's commission from all sales has been cut from 1/2 to
1/4.
Also, two of our part-time employees have been transferred to other stores/departments AND they also decided to let go a woman who was a manager of our Lauder counter who had worked for the company for 3 yrs and brought the counters business up by leaps and bounds to be told she can take a job in another store or go to sell men's clothing.
This is APPALLING!!! I am the only part-timer left, simply because I worked for Macy's for 9 years.
This is supposedly a collaboration between Macy's and Lauder, but we are leery. WHAT NEXT??
Do you think the fragrances will be greatly affected?
Don't they ever touch Calyx!!!
You know what this means. SMASHBOX AT CCO's. Yay. Well I hope.
im almost hoping smashbox fails...lauder ditched px for smashbox?! i think smashbox sucks as it is, its just gong to get worse!
WHAAAAT??? Let me fix that statement for you Dean-O - “The Estée Lauder Companies is the ideal drain for Smashbox to go down.” Poor Max must be spinning in his grave - first his namesake line gets resold and mismanaged to the point where it's PULLED IN THE US, now his dingdong grandson has basically made a deal with the devil.
fatbottmdgrl (awesome name by the way) - did Macy's give you or any of the ladies involved the option of moving to a different cosmetic line?
As far as Px, I still say that putting it on QVC killed it. You don't build up a brand around "custom blending" and things you have to do in person and then turn around and sell it on TV. It calls all the claims you've made into question.
Anon..
how much of PX's business was custom blending? I dont think that was even mentioned when it was on QVC.
I think they got away from the color matching that they started with years ago.
But it it weird that now they are buying smshbox that is also sold on the Q.
To LKG I used to buy Smashbox but the made in China thing stopped me as well. but I thought is it just the packaging that is made there not the actual cosmetics please correct me. That needs to change
You're right. I'm fuming big time. They dumped Px which had the best foundation and bought Smashbox?? Must be an easy way for them to cheapen the cost of making Smashbox. Lauder lines are not about the customer, they're about making money.
I am not a huge fan of Lauder but lets get the facts straight. Smashbox was owned by Max Factor which is a huge company. (so all the little guy stuff is not true) Secondly the quality has been going down for years thats why they were getting pulled out every where. The max factor brothers were to focused on some shady business. I think the line has gone down so much that lauder can actually elevate this one!
You know, Prescriptives fans can be mad all they want, but as much as we loved the brand, it's just not as well known as Smashbox and that's what's made Smashbox so successful. They've had amazing marketing from day one, whereas Prescriptives has not!
Both brands have their strong products and not so strong products... Prescriptives has an amazing foundation system but if people weren't buying it, then what's the point. Hopefully, Smashbox foundations will now get better...
I found this in an internet search: "The purchase price was not disclosed, but sources estimated it was between $200 million and $300 million. WWD first reported on April 23 that Lauder may have been in talks to buy Smashbox."
So Lauder can't keep Px going but can spend between $200 and $300 million to purchase Smashbox? As a long time Px user I'm furious!!
I'm an extremely fair-skinned redhead and Prescriptives was the only brand of foundation that I could find which actually matched my skin tone. I don't know where to look now. Are there any other makeup companies that use color-coding?
I worked for PX and was heartbroken when Lauder pulled it. I worked at one of the last custom blend counters and now work for MAC. I am disgusted that lauder has bought smashbox. MAC was very different before lauder purchased them and the brand will change but will also become a dynasty. It's very sad. For people that have a hard time finding foundation shades, try MAC great shades and prices lightest are going to be NC15 and NW15 darkest NC55 and NW55 have an artist help determine your undertone it is different than PX. goodluck every1
