40 Days and 40 Nights of Fragrance Notes: Vanilla
Vanilla is the second most expensive spice due to the extensive labor to grow and ferment the pods. It takes a whole lot of pixie magic to prepare vanilla for perfumery. According to Many Aftel's book Essence and Alchemy A Book of Perfume, vanilla's heavenly scent comes through a "curing process" that involves fermenting in sun and air.
"As the lower end of the pod begins to turn yellow, it releases a penetrating scent of bitter almonds. cracks open in it, releasing a small quality of its oil, which is known as balsam of vanilla. By degrees the color darkens, the flesh softens, and the true odor of vanilla begins to develop as the natural fermentation gradually progresses up the pod, which takes up to a month. The essence is exuded in thick reddish drop."

Vanilla smells sweet, powdered sugar-like, boozy with undercurrents of tobacco, almonds,and smoke. It can smell innocent and mysterious.
My love and appreciation for vanilla came late in my perfume collecting life. Le Labo's Vanille 44 was the scent that converted me into a vanilla fan.
The notes are bergamot, incense, gaiac wood, mandarin, vanilla, muscenone, pipol and hedione. It is a whispery, ghostly vanilla that is woody and church-like. This is not a gourmand vanilla. It is full of dark corners and twisted pathways.
Beware of falling in love with Vanille 44. It is sold only in Paris at the Colette boutique. It can break your heart and make you pine like a lovesick teen.
Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille: This is another great vanilla fragrance. Very creamy with coconut milk. Gormandish. The Sheldrake drydown is all kinds of burnt sugar, black licorice and woods.
Atelier Cologne Vanille Insensee: A worthy contender to the Le Labo Vanilla 44 throne! Serious gorgeous.
Coty Vanilla Fields and Vanilla Musk: Classics available at your local drugstore!
L'Artisan Vanilia: Hard to get.

My favorites are on your list....I love PdN Vanille tonka and Guerlain SDV.
One that I don't know if it's still in production, but that is really beautiful and ridiculously inexpensive is Laurence Dumont Vanilla orchidee. This company had a bunch of different vanillas...but the Orchidee was the only one I really liked....very natural and simple...not "candle scented" at all.
now THIS is the post I was waiting for, i kept wondering if you had missed the wonderful Vanilla! :) I've only sniffed a couple of those and i'm a huuuge vanilla scent lover. I think if you like smoky dark vanillas you have to try Yves Rocher Vanilla Noir (it is NOTHING like the BBW one despite bearing almost the same name). my current favorite and not too expensive.
I am usually not a vanilla fan,most of them are too sweet for my nose. I am going to try some of the ones you listed-sound interesting. What I do wear is Jo Malone-Vanilla and Anise. You need to use a good amount as it is not too "powerful,'but it so spicy and mysterious,I love it.
The first vanilla fragrance I loved was Burberry Brit - I went through a whole bottle of it haha. I'm looking for a new vanilla now, and loving Hermes Vanille Galante so far! And Nez a Nez Vanithe too!
My favorite vanilla has always been the cheapest one, Coty Vanilla Fields. I don't wear it much anymore but I still love it. I've kind of gotten away from most of my heavy-on-the-vanilla perfumes but I wore Allure by Chanel for years and it got me more compliments than any other fragrance I've ever worn.
I just purchased the new Kate Walsh fragrance, Boyfriend, without ever having heard of it or knowing the notes - it was love at first sniff. And there is vanilla and amber through and through. It sounds like it's been a hit or miss for many, but on me it blends out to a dream! It reminds me of something from my childhood, although I can't put my finger on what that might be. I'm ecstatic with this find :D Any other love (or hatred) for this fragrance?
Vanille 44 is the best Vanilla in the world, I agree.
