40 Days and 40 Nights of Fragrance Notes: Greens
It is not easy being green.
It is also not easy writing about greens.
This was a surprisingly difficult note to tackle. Very labor intensive. Green notes can range from the previously reviewed fig to tomato leaves. There is something to be said about the scent of freshly mowed grass. Who knew a note of "boxed hedge greens" could bring me to my knees? Well...Maison Martin Margiela did! He created a fragrance called Untitled that has uprooted my world. It is a velvety cloud of green. I beg you to run to your local Saks Fifth Avenue store to smell this scent. Many thanks to one of my favorite fragonerds, Julia, at the blog All About The Pretty. She was kind enough to gift me with a sample vial.
The best green fragrances are from the defunct Gobin Daude fragrance house. All the Gobins were masterpieces. It is a tragedy of epic proportions that the world has been robbed of their fragrances. Sous le Buis is a smoky, sappy green. So delicate with a whispery lavender note. Seve Exquise is just plain magic. It has a dreamy quality. It is dark grassy meadows.
Green fragrances smell like blades of grass, dry hay, fields of clover, herbs(angelica), leaves, moss, and rolling meadows.

Lovely list! My favorite green fragrance is Silences by Jacomo. A must-try for any green fan!
You know Annie...I never thought about it...but looking at this list I realize I am a truly serious green fragrance fan...I have almost every one on that list. I also mourn the Gobin Daudes....sigh... Mac MV 5 is a great grass green, Nasumatto Hindu grass is pretty fab also.
Wow this struck a chord with me! My first perfume was Jovan grass oil (LONG time ago) given to me by someone I barely knew except that I always told her she smelled wonderful (she was also thoughtful or a fragrance enabler). Of course soon after that jovan quit making it. Since then, I've bought private collection, aliage, dioressence, and cristalle, never really thinking they were "greens" (except maybe aliage which looked green in the bottle). Still trying to find the grass oil clone I guess! I've loved this fragrance series and appreciate the time you and your fellow fragnerds must have put in to this--
Green is so refreshing and so different from all the sweet scents in many perfumes. Green can be masculine as well as feminine. Aliage by Estee Lauder used to be a favorite of mine,it is nice any time of the year.
For the life of me, I've been trying (and trying) to understand why everyone is raving about Untitled so much. I just don't see it as having any really special qualities. It's nice, it's pleasant, I guess I expected a lot.
I love green scents as well, my favorite being Ormonde Woman and vintage Vent Vert.
Greens are my fave scents of all time. I actually just bought EL Aliage- its not sold in Canada so its rather exotic to me! I adore it and feel like it is what Chanel Bel Respiro should have been. Balmain Vent Vert is an HG for me, both current and vintage. Love Silences, YSL Y...even Balmain Ivoire is green. Yum.
Sounds like I am missing out - I do believe the only green fragrance I've ever smelled is the Gap scent, back in college. But just during a walk yesterday the scent of fresh-cut grass was beautiful!
Greens are my favorite not too sickly - isn't Estee by EL a green?
