Bitten Blows
I had no clue what a Steve and Barry's store was before the Sarah Jessica Parker hoopla. My first visit was on Thursday.
I will not be going back.
It felt like I was walking into a low rent Old Navy. The Bitten collection was clearly it's crown jewel. Most of the collection consisted of poorly made t-shirts that already looked like they had survived a rough life. The sleeves were unfinished and that disturbed me to the core. The Bitten manifesto is "It is every woman's right inalienable right to have a pulled together stylish, confident wardrobe with money left over to live."
My manifesto is "Finish your damn garments because women deserve t-shirts that can survive a washing."
It is a waste of labor, cotton and thread.
The $14 jeans appear to be the best constructed piece out of the Bitten collection. I am judging this from only a visual inspection. The fabric and finish felt good, the stitching and seams were average quality and there was no funny smell. Sometimes cheap jeans smell like gasoline. These did not. The fit is a mystery. I was not going to attempt to try these on. That is a job for a braver soul.

I agree 100%. I would only add that the canvas espadrilles were adorable. They come in black, blue, and red, but the store we visited did not have the red ones in stock.
Patti
haha! Good to know that we girlies in Canada (where we don't have Steve & Barry's stores) aren't missing out!
I always thought there was something a bit strange about the Bitten line anyway - it doesn't really say SJP to me.
Ha ha ha! That's funny, Annie! And kinda sad...sounds like some cheapo stuff!
BTW, I finally got another account and it's me...pssst...pattyg! LOL
Low-rent Old Navy is absolutely right. My college-student niece, having the budget of a college student, purchases sweatshirts there for my husband each Christmas. After he received a duplicate of the previous year's sweatshirt, I exchanged it for a pair of their store-brand jeans. They were too large, but I thought "They're cheap. Of course they'll shrink." They didn't shrink. But they did stain the drum of my brand-new clothes dryer.
LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I think she needs to try again and try much harder
Sugarshock: It was a collection that was supposed to be about basics. Instead it was all about poorly made t-shirts. I did not see many bottoms or outfits that could be built on. I am guessing the line might be more fleshed out in the fall. Maybe that collection will have more SJP in there.
Brava: OMG
Your poor dryer. I hope she gets your husband a gift certificate next year.
We did feel the SJP jeans to see if they felt kinda oily, slick. They felt soft and non-weird. I am curious on the fit issues. I am hoping a reader is brave...and tries them on.
You know ... that's just a bit offensive (the clothes, not your post). I mean, yeah - I appreciate the idea that those of us without much money deserve to have well-made, fashionble clothes. Well, then give us WELL-MADE, fashionable clothes! Just because we have a budget, that doesn't mean that we want clothes that are falling apart. God!
I tried on the jeans today. They were ok, but I tried on 2 different styles in the same size and one fit just right and the other was way too small. Weird. Also, they have the cheap jean mark aka the saggy back that is way too low. I'm spoiled by designer jeans I guess. I did get some earrings tho, cheap costume jewelry is always good and they were cute and only 6 bucks.
I tried on some of the items out of sheer curiosity. The linen pants in particular were heinous! They had these weird flaps on the pockets that made my thighs look like Dumbo!
I did however buy a sweatshirt. Who can't get behind a cheap, who-cares-what-happens-to-it sweatshirt.
Overall, I give it a "D". Try again SJP. In fact, learn from the man you love so much- redesign and pitch to Target ala Isaac Mizrahi...
I did not try anything on but has a look.. They were flying out of the store. There seemed to be too many t shirts I thought. The jeans did seem ok for 14.98 though. considering they were all under 20 dollars I was surprsed the items were not falling apart just by looking at them. A for effort but not sure if I am on board yet.
P.S loved the espadrilles did not come in my size
Wish that I had seen these so far, but point to ponder: This stuff is probably built to the same specs as a lot of other brands, but since it has a cheapo price tag we think it looks worse. Seriously - I remember when I worked at Lauder that they talked about making products cost just enough - so that people would think they were buying a luxury product. I would guess that these clothes are the exact same quality (just worse design) than Old Navy or Gap or any other mall-type store. Sorry - design might be better but quality is going downhill for mass markets.
To the last Anonymous, have you felt this line? The t-shirts are so darn flimsy and see-through, I'd be afraid to wear one. The fabric feels very cheap. Shoot, one of the shirts looked like a baby onsie! I could get a better quality t-shirt at Old Navy for the same price. Plus the "design" is really a non-design.
hey, kitten -
if you'll re-read my first line, no. but i have noticed an awful lot of super flimsy crap being peddled for an awful lot more money.
ha ha Annie, I'm a Pittsburgher who was recently in NYC. I'm glad to see I missed NOTHING by skipping the S & B/Bitten. Just looking at it from the window made me think "I could have maybe looked good in this when I was 18 and cheap clothes/paper sacks looked good on me. Now, not so much."
I bought a pair of jeans and they were poorly made! The vertical seam in the rear was crooked! When you looked at me from behind you could see the seam was waaaay to the left. I got bitten and now I have a serious fashion infection.
No more SJP for me. I only spent $15 bucks, but would cost more in gas to take 'em back and the TREK through the mall agian IS NOT HAPPENING. It's a super cheap clothing line. Very boring, no color, Gap's very distant 12 year old cousin came up with this line. And by the way, a lot of what was on Oprah and the web site was NOT AVAILABLE in the store on June 8th in Dallas when it officially launched.
Where's that chic black suit Sarah wore on Oprah?
I'll admit that I was excited - never really watch a complete episode if SIS, but Sarah seems really stylish.
I do recal on Oprah, that she said something to the effect of "I don't want to give people the impression that these are the clothes I have in my closet..."
I SHOODA KNOWN BETTAH!
How about SJP makes the sizing normal......she says its not for size 2, 98-118 pounds. Hello some of us are naturallly small and NOTHING in her line fits us. She has lost tons of business
I purchased a pair of jeans over the weekend at a new Steve and Barry's and they fit great but smell like some kind of chemical! I've washed them twice and its still noticeable. I think I'm bringing them back!! Anyone else have this problem??
Yep, I had the same thing with a pair from Steve and Barry's. After the 3rd wash the smell is starting to fade.
