Covet Review

If you have seen the TV ad for the new scent called Covet by Sarah Jessica Parker, you might be thinking it's really Carrie Bradshaw in that ad! It certainly reminded me of the Carrie character that Parker played for six seasons of Sex And The City. Right down to the red-soled Louboutin pumps! The commercial is as adorable as Parker and Bradshaw. Lifting her ruffled party frock, she breaks the glass of the store window with her Louboutin-clad foot, to get to the bottle of Covet inside the window , because, as she says from her jail cell, "I had to have it!"

When I saw the precious bottle, I had to have it, too. But would I like the juice itself? I went to Macy's to try it out.

The notes for Covet are: wet grass, geranium leaves, Sicilian lemon, lavender, chocolate, honeysuckle, magnolia, muguet, musk, vetiver, bois de cashmere, teakwood, and amber.

I sprayed the tester bottle onto my arm. Within less than three minutes, all I could smell was musk. Anyone who knows my taste in scents knows that musk is the kiss of death to me in a fragrance. There are very few exceptions, to be sure. But I loved Parker's first scent, Lovely, and so I thought I'd live with that test spray for a few more hours to see what happened, and not just reject the scent at that moment. Parker seems to love lavender and musk, because those notes are also in her first scent. Covet is much more gourmand than Lovely, and the musk note is identical in both of them. I like that she used these notes in both scents. It shows her personal touch in the development in both of them.

But I digress. Covet's musk lingered for hours, not unpleasant at all, but then again, it was musk. I still wanted the bottle. A second trip to Macy's had me reaching again for the tester. This time, a kind and knowledgeable SA showed me the body lotion and told me that it was a really good body product and she was wearing it herself. She offered her arm for me to take a sniff. I was surprised to be able to smell the florals and the chocolate notes on her skin. She suggested to me that in order to bring out the top and mid notes on my own skin, and to hold off the development of the musk, that I try the layering of the body lotion and then the spray. That was all it took. I had to have it! I caved.

It is truly amazing that the layering of the body lotion under the spray brings out all the notes and allows them their fullest development. I'm amazed at the results. The musk takes longer to emerge and when it does, it doesn't dominate the woods and amber. It just accents them and enriches them. I'm not usually tempted to buy ancillaries, but this combination produced the fullness of Covet as I'd wanted it to be when I first tried it.

Did you know that the cap, a circle of amber jewels, has a hole in the center? My SA told me that SJP will bring out a neckpiece for Holiday, so we can all wear our Covet caps as pendants! I'm not waiting. I'll wear mine on a ribbon or a cord right now and into Fall, with chunky tweedy sweaters and soft cashmeres. And a layering of Covet underneath, of course. Body lotion first, then spray. I think I need a pair of Louboutins to complete my outfit.

I can't believe I am saying this, but Covet is amazing, really amazing, and the sillage is gorgeous. As you know, I do not love, or even like Lovely, but this Covet is really good. Perhaps the best lavender blend I have encountered. I am this close to caving. The chocolate is so subtle, it does not register as chocolate. Something about Covet reminds me of Sensi, but it is better. This is a very wearable fragrance, perfect for weekend, work, etc. I can't believe how much I love this...
The bottle is darling, but the little flower cap is a disappointment, it has a hole in the middle, like a donut and fits around the nozzle, like a sun visor as opposed to a cap. Oh well...

Bitten Blows

I had no clue what a Steve and Barry's store was before the Sarah Jessica Parker hoopla. My first visit was on Thursday.
I will not be going back.

It felt like I was walking into a low rent Old Navy. The Bitten collection was clearly it's crown jewel. Most of the collection consisted of poorly made t-shirts that already looked like they had survived a rough life. The sleeves were unfinished and that disturbed me to the core. The Bitten manifesto is "It is every woman's right inalienable right to have a pulled together stylish,confident wardrobe with money left over to live."
My manifesto is "Finish your damn garments because women deserve t-shirts that can survive a washing."
It is a waste of labor, cotton and thread.

The $14 jeans appear to be the best constructed piece out of the Bitten collection. I am judging this from only a visual inspection. The fabric and finish felt good, the stitching and seams were average quality and there was no funny smell. Sometimes cheap jeans smell like gasoline. These did not. The fit is a mystery. I was not going to attempt to try these on. That is a job for a braver soul.
