Shu Uemura
1928-2007
His company, Shu Uemura Cosmetics Inc., which is now under the control of French cosmetics giant L'Oreal, will hold a commemoration ceremony on January 31 in Tokyo (yahoo.news)
His big opportunity came during the filming of the 1962 movie "My Geisha," starring Shirley MacLaine, when her make-up artist fell ill and Uemura stood in, his company's Web site says.
"Upon completion of Ms. MacLaine's intricate and laborious geisha make-up, Mr. Uemura had transformed the actress's Caucasian face entirely into a Japanese geisha with Asian features. There was ovation from everyone who witnessed the transformation, including Ms. MacLaine herself," it says. (yahoo.news)

I just read this online a bit ago. It's very sad but he left us with some wonderful products. I loved his LE palettes (funny enough I just bought the one from summer or maybe it fall a few days ago, along with some blushes and lipsticks). I fell really hard for Shu lipsticks and anyone doing a bit of Shu shopping today really should add one to your cart. I promise you will not be disappointed.
His makeup of Shirley MacLaine is simply amazing. I think we are all very lucky her makeup artist fell ill that day and he got his big break. He has given up so many wonderful products and creative looks.
I personally will wear all Shu today for him.
I didn't know! Thank you for posting this tribute. I know that he is one of your beauty heroes.
I'm truely sad and caught by surprise as I had just heard about it. He was masterful and a genius. Will really miss his artistry.
