40 days and 40 Nights of Beauty Cult Classics
Day 24, Nars Dolce Vita Lipstick by Leah aka Griffie
When Annie asked me to write about Nars Dolce Vita for forty days and forty nights I had to say yes. I love a good lipstick, and Nars is my favorite makeup line. Nars is particularly well known for its matte red lippies, which will be discussed briefly and for two cult classic “lippie” colors, Gipsy and Dolce Vita.
I have seen Dolce Vita (DV) described as mauve, red, and pink. To my eye Dolce Vita is a warm, corally, fleshy pink. The Nars website describes it as “dusty rose”. DV is not an exciting color, but it is a work horse, a no brainer, an "I look this beautiful naturally" color. It is a sheer color, with no shine, distinguishing it from its color twin, Clinique Guava Stain. I have yet to meet the girl that DV does not look good on.
Dolce Vita wears through several cups of coffee, which I find to be satisfactory wear, it only takes a second to touch up after all. In my experience it is not drying, but it is not particularly emollient either. So if your lips are dry, put on a bit of chapstick first. When DV wears it wears evenly. Nothing bothers me more than visible lip line (vll). Seriously, when I see those little lipstick rings on women it is all I can do not to pass them a jar of Vaseline. VLL is an epidemic, but that is another story for another time.
Packaging is the typical Nars packaging. I tend to agree with everyone else that the matte black rubber is beautiful at first, velvety and soothing. However, it is a dirt magnet, and the matte finish wears off and the casing starts to look like it is in the peeling stage of sunburn.
Now, I said I would touch on Nars’ red lippies. The Nars matte reds are cult classics in and off themselves. They are part of what I call the Viva Glam revolution, remember the RuPaul ad campaign? Nars makes some of the best reds in the style of Viva Glam, but I find the look to be a little tired at this point so…
Dolce Vita is a classic because it works for so many women. It is easy to wear, and always looks appropriate. In the tube it is not a life changer, but once you have it you will never be without it. It adapts itself to a variety of blushes and eye shadows. It is the cashmere hoodie of the lipstick world and every girl should have a cashmere hoodie.

Well - you can now say you've met the girl that Dolce Vita doesn't look good on! I am very fair with Y/O undertones, and virtually no pigment (no natural "pink") to my lips. Dolce Vita goes totally orange on me and more than one makeup artist/salesperson has said "no" after seeing it on me. I am always drawn to it, as I seek the "Holy Grail" of natural-color lippies. Alas, it is not for me!
I love my Dolce Vita lipstick! Anyone try the Dolce Vita lipgloss? Is it as fabulous at the lipstick?
I like to top off my Dolce Vita with some NARS Turkish Delight gloss. I like the combo better than I like each on its own.
I wore Dolce Vita on my wedding day :)
I love Turkish Delight over lipstick! It makes everything look better!
I am wondering if Dolce Vita is the same texture and finish as Roman Holiday? Roman Holiday is a total workhorse for me as I love my pinks. But on days when I want something more natural, I leave Roman Holiday behind. Maybe Dolce Vita is the answer?
What a lovely review, Griffie! I think I've actually used up three Dolce Vitas! It's my favorite Nars color!
Great review! I totally agree with the term "work horse"! Very aptly put!
Btw, which type of chopstick can I use on my lips to prevent vll please? The lacquer kind or the wooden kind? Hahahaha!
ITA with nina - DV doesn't work on me. I'm fair with Y/O (per Px cosmetics line) and my lips are practically white. Goes on way too dark and rust colored. Also, I require a little shine or shimmer on my otherwise flesh colored lips. DV is so pretty in the tube -how I wish I could wear it. In fact, I picked it up again Saturday at Sephora and looked longingly at it and then put it away.
i would agree that nars has fantastic red shades n DV is a great every-day/ work place/ perfect for all occasions shade but the lipstick is drying and smells and taste like its gone rancid.
Cewek: LOL! I just caught that now!
i may be mistaken...however isnt the Viva Glam from MAC???@!!! I'm like....99.99999% sure unless it was a joint effort that I just don't know about. Yes?? No?? Am I totally tripping out?
I have very pink lips naturally and pink undertones to my skin, so Dolce Vita looks a bit yellow on me. But the Roman Holiday is a different story. It is one of those lipsticks that is always in my pocket. Roman Holiday creates that beautiful petal-like look and finish on me and looks incredible..RH is MY working horse.
PS: Love NARS to shreds, about 70% of my makeup is NARS, but totally agree about their packaging. Looks worn out and kind of ...um...dirty after some time!!!! Grrr...
The Dolce Vita lipgloss is awesome! I love it almost as much as the lippie!!
it's a fabulous color. What I like is that it gives a nice deposit of color without being thick at all -- it melds with your lips rather than laying on top of them.
great post!
