Mad Men Politics
I keep politics off this blog due to many reasons. I work for a politician and this blog is my refuge away from my 9-5 job. Discussing politics will always get passionate and ugly no matter how civilized you are. So no politics are ever discussed here but friendly reminders to vote.
Today I am breaking the rule a smidge to discuss how the television show Mad Men might be influencing the fashion choices of both candidates wives. Cindy McCain seems to be channeling Betty Draper while Michelle Obama has settled into a Joan Holloway frame of mind.
Michelle Obama chose a Thakoon dress for her husband's formal nomination. The exaggerated rose pattern instantly made me think of a dress Peggy Olson wore this season. I might be stretching the similarities but that specific dress opened my eyes to the Mad Men influence. The women are influenced by the elegance of Jackie Kennedy with a twist of Hitchcockian Grace Kelly. Both women have been sporting sheath dresses, full skirts, innocent cardigans and 1960's inspired accessories.
Cindy McCain wore a yellow dress with a tiny slip of a cardigan on a political stop. It was pure Betty Draper. She paired it with a fabulous Chanel watch. Mrs McCain wears this time piece religiously.
Cindy also depends on her weapon of choice, the ponytail. That is pure Peggy. The fashion critics have been fairly harsh on Mrs McCain but there is something charming about the Eisenhower full skirts.
Michelle Obama is making very fine fashion choices. Her Mad Men counterpart is Joan Holloway. Michelle and Joan are all about the body hugging sheath. They are all vavoom and bada bing. These are the women that are really bringing "sexy back".
Michelle Obama might also soon be responsible for the return of the brooch. She has an impressive collection.
Mad Men's costume department has unearthed some truly spectacular parure sets from Coro and Hattie Carnegie along with some lovely brooches. The first time I spotted an aurora borealis necklace on the show I squealed with delight. Each Mad Men episode is a jewelry treasure trove.
Regardless of your political affiliation, both women are making some pretty fabulous fashion choices. In the comments let us know what you think. Please keep it fashion, Mad Men or accessory related. No brawls or heated debates. I realize that this subject is as deep as a plate...but that is what this blog is all about. It is about pretty and flounces.
Visit the political blogs to cause a ruckus.
Watch Mad Men on AMC every Sunday night at 10 pm. You will not regret it. It is the best thing on television besides my beloved Gossip Girl.

Love the analogies! They are spot on. I am also addicted to Mad Men.
Nobody did a better homage than Michael Kors this fall. Clearly he is loving it too.
Thanks for cleverly pointing this out!
Best,

Michelle is amazing -- and you're right that she has been rocking those brooches!
I am hopelessly addicted to Mad Men, and I would watch it without sound if necessary just because I adore the clothes and jewelry so much. So many details to appreciate - the way the characters wear the same clothes on different episodes, like anyone who works in the real world. The slips and undergarments (Betty Draper's diaphonous nightgowns are fab). Love how this season's episodes show everyone getting dressed in the opening segment, as if putting on their daily armor. The hats and gloves! Betty Draper's riding togs! Pete Campbell's wife in her crinoline dresses, Bobbi Barrett in everything, great looking guys in suits. And Joan's unapologetically luscious curves. It's all pure wonderful TV magic.
I am loving the fashion on Mad Men, too. I think both of the candidates wives have great accessories, even when their picks are a blunder (I didn't like Michelle O's floral dress at all. I'd prefer to see her wearing a suit at high profile events such as the DNC).
Betty Draper does remind me so much of Grace Kelly meets Samantha from Bewitched. And Joan is so stylish! My favorite outfit so far in season 2 was the taupe and cream cape ensemble that Bobbie Barret wore to visit Don at the office though. Love this show!
What have I been missing??? An homage to Michael Kors? Lacy slips that I wish I could find in stores today? (My mother till has some beautiful ones) I hope there's a rerun during the week!
Michelle Obama is so gorgeous and elegant. I totally agree with the comparison with Joan. It makes me want to wear lithe little sheath dresses and brooches every day... which might get me some odd looks in the library.
What do you think about the orangey-red lips that all the Mad Men ladies are rockin this season? The best show on TV.
michelle's brooches are amazing...but somehow, I don't know how I could pull that off myself without looking like an old grandma; but somehow, she makes them look fabulous and chic!
I adore michelle Obama's style. Especially the green sheath and the navy dress with the brooch. She looks elegant & well put together, yet sexy. Great post!!!
Is makeup-related okay? I have never, ever noticed a thing Cindy McCain was wearing because the stark contrast between her tan-foundationed face and pale neck, with the most egregious line of demarcation ever, is just too in-your-face. I so badly want SOMEONE to tell her about it, or help her fix it!

both ladies have looked great. I think Mrs. McCain take a lot of hits, but she shouldn't. she dresses lovely, mostly in St. John and hey thats not bad. I agree her makeup needs work.
Love the brooches but I am a pin girl. I have many and love them.
The rose dress didn't do anything for me though.
Darling, what a fabulous post. Your comparisons are perfect. McCain does need a foundation intervention, though, I agree on that point. Michelle always looks very correct but I'm afraid the Thakoon dress did little for me, despite my love for that designer.
I am a huge Jackie fan but I yearn for a political wife who will take her cues from someone else, or better yet, start her own trends. Jeez, even Carla Bruni is doing a Jackie. (is it too political to say Bruni gives me a big pain anyway? She wears one fairly decent gray coat and a purple suit and I'm supposed to fall over with love.) I have never seen an American woman in politics, whether on her own or as a wife, with the impeccable individual style of Segolene Royal, for example.
Excellent post -- I love Obama's style.
Nina: There is a great interview with the Mad Men makeup artists on BellaSugar!!!
The one MA said that they do not use blue based lippies because they look so intense on film. I think the corals and clear reds are accurate for the period. I love the coral nails! I wonder if it is a Estee Lauder shade!
Campaspe: I think the actress that plays Joan looks exactly like you!!!!!!!!
Has anyone told you that yet?
))))))F(((((((
No, just you mon chou. And this is why I love you!
part of why, anyway. **smooooch**
I thought of you as I looked for Erika F in Paris and did not find it.
back on topic--Joan is unquestionably my favorite and I love her style although January Jones is freaking stunning.
