40 Days and 40 Nights of Primers

Primer, Day 2, is DHC Velvet Skin Coat.
The product is a very thick pasty consistency with a translucent appearance, milky-clear. It is difficult to smooth on evenly, and due to the clearness of the product on the face, it is hard to determine if it has indeed been applied to all areas. I applied it in small areas at a time in order to ensure that I had covered all areas equally. I don't think I succeeded. It is difficult to apply a thin coat of this dense product. I applied the foundation over top and went out for about an hour and a half.
When I returned home, I checked the appearance of my complexion in a mirror. Yikes, not good! My foundation had worn unevenly and there were areas where it had sunk into my pores, and the area around my nose had flaked severely. Under my eyes, crinkles were actually accented because my foundation had sunk into the lines. The product was so drying that it actually appeared that I'd appled powder unevenly on my skin.
And so I can report, without hesitation, that the DHC Velvet Skin Coat did not impress me at all, and I can't recommend it unless you have youthful skin that is very oily.
Product rating, 3.

Thanks, Patti! I've always wondered whether that one would be any good, since I love all of DHC's cleansing and skincare products. Good to know I can save my dough.
Have I mentioned how much I love your review of primers? Talk about a fantastic idea! So far my favorite is Smashbox too, and I also like the primer that comes with Cover Girl Outlast All Day Liquid Make-up. I can't wait to real all your other reviews!
"read", not "real".
I am glad everyone is enjoying the primer 40 days/nights coverage. P is an excellent reviewer. I am thinking of other theme weeks. I might have to start paying her in perfume or mexican food.
I beg to differ with this review!?! Perhaps your skin is not up to par for this product! As a makeup artist myself, I have seen great results and I have to say hands-down it's the best one out there! Perhaps you have a bad foundation if you're flaking and drying from a product that contains silica (a smoothing agent) and olive oil (a moisturizer!)??? Do you use a regular moisturizer before you apply foundation? If your skin is sucking up your products than you, my dear, are severly dehydrated. You should also allow to absorb before applying any primer or foundations so this disaster does not happen again!
Wow, I'm completely miffed!
Hello Betty,
Cavewoman is using La Prairie skin caviar concealer foundation for each primer review. As a makeup artist you would know that this line is high end and pretty darn good.

Gee, I wish I had better things to say about La Prairie with it's just-under-two-benjamin's price tag! But, in the past I have seen this product cause extreme conjestion as it tends to lock itself into the pores. On top of that it can create an 'oil-pan' look on the skin. If it's dewey you're going for than great, but from reading your material, it seems like you're a little on the dry side and you may be experiencing problems with the foundation floating on your olier spots and larger pores in the t-zone, and absorbing into your drier spots causing the flakiness. A good skincare routine can cure this, but alas– a primer cannot!
Hello, Betty,
Thanks for your personal opinions here, and as you read my reviews, you can see that they are MY personal opinion as well.
I am using La Prairie foundation for all reviews just to be fair in making my judgments. It's one of the best I have and you may not care for it, but it works beautifully on my skin.
My skin is healthy and clean. I have no breakouts, I use impeccable skincare products from Payot for cleansing and moisturizing, and I also use mechanical exfoliators and a peptide product at night. I've been told by every makeup artist that I know, that my skin is great.
Please remember that the views expressed here are just my own personal experience with each product. Isn't it nice that there are so many of them? That way, everyone can use what works best for him or her.
Did you ever read the directions? ...SMALL amount...to fingerTIPS..THINLY over entire face...
The product is great and I have very combo skin (extremely dry on nose and eyes, and oily on other parts of my face). It is a super base after cleansing.
Maybe if you read the directions you wouldn't be giving an uneducated review.
I am very glad that it worked for you. It always wonderful to find that one great product that works for you.
We still stand by the review. To be honest...this was the worst primer I have ever tried. I could not recommend it to anyone.
That is just my opinion.
To Anonymous,
Thank goodness there are so many choices in primers. My results may not be the same for others. Of course I read the instructions. I gave every product, including DHC, a fair chance. I am capable of reading instructions and applying product exactly according to instructions.
DHC did not work for me. How nice that it works for you.
I also have to disagree with the review on all counts. I've found it easy to smooth on, easy to apply a thin coat, wears wonderfully under makeup and have no flaking or creasing. I have skin that is by no means youthful (40 way-plus!)and oily only on my nose. Just trying to give a balanced view!
I am a woman in my early 50's. I have been using make-up & skin care products for many years & have gained much experience, especially since I was also a Territory Sales Manager for a well known, top of the line major cosmetic industry in the 80's, early 90's. I've been retired five years now, so I have plenty of time on my hands to research. I am constantly seeking new skin products for we all want to look & stay youthful, well at least I do. :~) I have tired & used many skin care & cosmetics lines over the years & just want to say that DHC Velvet Skin Coat makeup Primer worked very well for my normal skin. Left my skin so silkly smooth & make up FANTASTIC. I found it to be an excellent product. Everyone's skin type is different & every product doesn't always work for some people unfortunately. I have to say that my skin has never felt smoother in my entire life. I received a catalog in the mail along with 4 free samples and that is how I discovered DHC products. I have to say that I have been blessed with good genes & most people still think I'm in my early 40's. I look more youthful since I started using DHC's Velvet Skin Coat. You can also call the company & request 4 free samples. I also use DHC Coenzyme Q10. Great stuff too. I would highly recommend these products. Hope this helps. Opinions do count, but give it a fair chance & try the free samples. GOOD LUCK! Betty was probably right in accessing Patti's skin condition. D
Of course my reviews are based on my own experience with this product. I am amazed that out of 40 primers that I tested for this project, this one seems to receive the most outrage from readers.
If you find that this product works well for you, that's great. Of the remaining 39, surely there would be one that worked well for me but won't work for you.
I stand by this review and the results that I found from using this product.
I received the Velvet Skin Soft product as a free sample in the mail, also. LOVED it! (I am 40 years old and have combination skin.) I used every scrap of it and then ordered more today.

Hi there. I, too, received some free samples in a catalog I received from DHC and was blown away by the way my skin looked and felt. All of their products are fantastic and I am now a loyal customer to DHC products.
After using their products for only a week, my neighbor stopped me and asked if I had microdermabrasion done because my skin has never looked better!
Kudos to DHC and their products.
I have to agree with Betty. I have used many primers: Smashbox, Laura Mercier, LaPrairie... The DHC product is amazing. I have tried 2 or 3 free samples now just to be sure, and just placed an order. Not to mention, saved a few bucks. Its such a personal thing, gotta find what works for you.
I have recently begun using this product as well and I love it. It is very good for my fairly oily t-zone skin. I use mineral makeup over it and I love that at the end of a long day, my makeup is still nearly as perfect as if I just applied it and it is incredible at keeping the shine off my face. But, obviously it is not going to work for everyone. I do appreciate your honest reviews.
I am a 55 year old woman and think the DHC Velvet Skin coat is one of the best products I have ever found. I use Bare Minerals makeup and find it works perfectly with the skin coat. My make up looks great all day, and as a busy teacher, I have many long days! Results may perhaps depend on skin type, kind of make up applied, amount of make up applied, as this may be true of many products....I only know my skin looks smooth and glowing. My 28 year old niece loves this product as well.
I got a sample in the mail too.. and I have to say.. I LOVE this DHC velvet coat! Its really amazing! Now, I dont get into all the expensive lines you are talking about, I have only used bare minerals primer, but when I tried this i was so impressed! So smooth & so soft! A friend was amazed at how soft my face felt. I use mineral makeup, that worked great with it all day. Its a very neat feeling product. Im going for the full size! Order a sample.. You will love it!!! XO
I love this stuff! Just turned a friend on to it. She and I both use Bare Minerals, we live in the hot, humid south and are both in our fifties. I use it after moisterizer, before the Bare Minerals. Dont have to touch up even once a day!
And I work a 8-10 hour day!
The DHC Olive Oil cleanser is great
too, the the price is very reasonable.
I'm not much of a make-up wearer, but I LOVE Velvet Skin Coat--I was shocked to find that it made my skin literally feel as smooth and soft as rose petals. Nothing's ever done that for me. I put it on and then touch up any blemishes with a little cover stick and finish with Everyday Minerals powder--my face stays looking smooth and natural all day.
I am a 34 yr old woman working 18 hour days in New England. Velvet skin coat is the best thing that's ever happened to my combination skin. It is fabulous with or without makeup -- really adds to my comfort and confidence in the staying power of my makeup. Of course, individual reactions will vary. However, I highly recommend this product.
I wanted to comment (and disagree!) on the review as I've just gotten a DHC catalog in the mail. Along with a few other samples, there was a small sample of the Velvet Skin Coat. After reading the reviews in the catalog I decided to try it out. (I have very sensitive skin with normal oiliness.) After applying moisturizer and allowing it to sit a few minutes, I squeezed out a small amount of the Skin Coat on my fingertips and mixed in several drops of water. This both makes the Coat go further and makes it feel lighter. The effect was amazing! Even now, 2 hours later, my skin still feels velvety and continues to be free of shine. Unless you have very oily skin, I highly suggest that you use moisturizer under this product, and the addition of a bit of water made it much easier to apply. I had no problem getting every area of my face covered. The sample says 3 applications, but I think it'll be more like 6. That's good, because I'm ordering this product today and hoping it comes before I run out of the sample!
Holly: I am glad that it worked for you. Primers are tricky things. I used to adore Smashbox but lately it has not worked for me. You also made me glad that I never deleted the comments in this thread. I truly left them up because they might help people in their primer search. It might not have worked for me or P...but it might be someone's holy grail product.
Just a heads up to the other posters who all come from the same IP address: I have site meter.
My patience is really wearing thin with the nasty comments from the PR firm/and or members of the company.
Consider this your first and final warning.
BTW: I will NEVER buy any of your products.
To the legit readers: Do not feel funny about leaving a review in this thread. If you are legit in a gush or a bash...it will stay up.
i worked as a make-up artist for 12 years and I am now a nurse.
I also recieved a sample in the mail. I have used many silicone based primers and this one was very different from most. I use Erno Lazlo, whic h is very good skincare and take great care of my skin. i do not always wear make-up as I do not need to even being in my late 30's. I found Velvet Skin Coat to be drying and did not like that it made my sking look very mat. I like Clarins Beauty Flash Balm much better for making my skin look radiant w/o make-up. And I also like smashbox primer better for under foundation. And to think that DHC or thier customers are getting so irrate about the review makes one not want to be a DHC customer at all. Why fight over an opinion, wow how sad a world we live in.
I think the review is super bias. I am a makeup artist that hangs around a bunch of senior artists and they always rave about this primer. Those professionals with 10+ years experiences LOVE to use this for everybody, no matter what skin type or race.
Hope that helps. I love bloggers that spend so much time reviewing products for us (thankyou!) But bloggers who review and then completely close their eyes and mind to their own opinion (after all others disagree posts) make me speechless.
Velvet Skin Coat is a FABULOUS product! I don't know if you got a bad tube or what, but it's a VERY light and smoothing product. It makes your skin look flawless. You aren't supposed to use alot.
You can always get a sample from them and try it first. I hope all you girls don't give up on this product due to one person's opinion.
