40 Days and 40 Nights of Beauty Brand Reviews
Day 1, Almay
Cavewoman: As you can see from the photo, the packaging has changed twice since I first discovered Almay's eyeliner pencil many years ago. Back then it was called Amazing Lasting Eye Pencil, and of course, anything that amazing needed to be tried. The package promised 16 hours of lasting power, and I would have settled for half that long. My eyes would challenge even the most stubborn, tenacious liner. I can't say that Almay's Amazing Lasting lasted 16 hours, but it does stay put all day for me, and that has kept me buying this product over and over again since that first pencil purchase. Now it's simply called Almay Eye Liner, but the promise is still printed on the packaging, and the latest version has a little sharpener in the base of the pencil. The pencil is a twist-up, crayon-style, and it's soft enough to apply without tugging, but stiff enough to lay down a thin line close to the lashes. It's easy to use for tightlining, too, just pushing the tip between lashes for an almost invisible but pretty, eye-defining look. I've also used this liner inside the rims of my eyelids, and it stays well when used in that way too. Removal is easy with a swipe or two of the Almay Non-Oily Eye Makeup Remover Pads, another staple on my vanity table. No matter what other makeup lines or items I may have in regular use, these two Almay products are always part of my daily makeup routine. Packaging may change over the years, but as long as Almay continues to offer this great quality product, I'll be buying.
Annieytown: My pick for the best Almay product is their infamous oil free eye makeup remover pads. It is the one item that I find myself repurchasing again and again. The reason why I keep coming back for more is the results. This pad takes everything off but the skin and eyeball. It takes off my heavy duty mascara, pigmented eye shadows and eye primer. It does not irritate or dry the sensitive skin under the eye. It leaves no greasy residue or mess.
This specific version is recommended for contact lens wearers. There will be no intense burning or begging the gods for mercy if this gets in your eye. No pain is a wonderful thing when it comes to any eye makeup remover.
I give this product high marks for efficiency, quality and price.
It is a drugstore gem!

I read about these Almay pads a couple weeks ago and tried them out and I also really like them. I've tried both Clinique's Take the Day off and Neutrogena's eye makeup remover and they were both too greasy. I love these though and they are perfect for keeping at your desk in case you have a mid-day smudge!
FYI-you must close the almay pads tightly or they will dry up :(
What a great idea - the best of 40 brands! I use the Almay Moisturizing Eye Makeup Remover pads - they are oily, but they remove waterproof mascara so easily, and I always use them before I wash my face, so the oily residue gets washed away.
The Almay pads really are fantastic and the oil-free has never once irritated my super-sensitive skin. Best remover out there (IMO).
I've never tried any Almay products before. I am smitten with MAYBELLINE's Unstoppable Eyeliner, but I sure would like to try Almay eye liner next time. =)
The Almay pads and the One Coat mascara have been favorites. I'm going to try that eyeliner!
I really miss the Almay Amazing Lasting Concealer. it was the best coverage. I use the Perscriptives Camoflauge Cream now, and it is not nearly as good. The 2 Almay concealers on the market now are far too drying or don't last under my eyes. I hope one day they bring back the old formula. Until then, I'm boycotting the brand entirely.
I lovelovelove Almay's great line of liquid liners. The felt tip gives me great control and the colors all have a gorgeous but subtle pearly shimmer.
And I definitely agree that the original long-lasting liner is a great buy! It's my pick for lining the inner rims. I find myself wanting to stray and try Urban Decay's 24/7 liners though..
I LOOOVEEE the Almay eye makeup remover pads. They are truly the best, although the earlier commenter was correct, they can dry out. Sometimes I store them upside-down to prevent this or when I am just feeling kooky.
I've been using the non-oily pads for years! Love them! I loved their Whipped Lipgloss (((J))) which is sadly discontinued.
I love the "best of 40 brands" idea and look forward to reading everyone's posts and responses!
cheers, Sara
i love their makeup remover [the one pictured]. it conditions your eyes and my eyelashes looked a lot happier once i started using it instead of scrubbing my eyes with a towel and water. i definitely recommend it!
No fav Almay here, really have not had great experience's with it, but wanted to say the 40 days is a great idea, and happy Ash Wednesday. Looking forward to the posts .
Anon: I always twist my Almay jar tightly. I had that happen to me once and I was very unhappy.
I still have my dried out MAC wipes because it ticks me off to even throw them away. (I know...I need to pitch those...its not like they are going to come back to life any time soon.
Melvis: Test the cargo concealer the next time you are in Sephora. I really like the results.
BeautyA: Happy Ash Wednesday to you too!
I love the Almay eye enhancing sets and now the new lip enhancing sets. I think its such a great step in the right direction for a makeup company to put out fool proof makeup for people who don't usually wear it. When they buy the eyeshadow, the liner and mascara are right next to it, you don't even have to think twice! My mother loves it and it enabled me to teach her about highlighting and contouring with the different shades.
I have a request for you! Its just a small one, I promise! :)
I have an online buddy in college and she is working on a team for a class to develop a plan for drugstores selling higher end makeup. She has asked me to ask around the beauty world and see what would draw someone to a drugstore to buy high end makeup rather than a Sephora, etc.
I have posted the question on my blog http://thespecialgloss.blogspot.com
could you give me your insight?
Thanks a bunch! I love the blog.
I have never tried Almay's makeup remover. Although, I will give it a try being that you have given it your stamp of approval.
I also have not tried the makeup remover but I will give it a shot next time. The only Almay product that I remember was a burgandy shade of lipstick. I wore that lipstick everyday for the longest, it was such a great color and consistency. In fact that might have been the lipstick to start my love affair with dark colors...
Great idea on the 40 days of reviews! I can't wait to see what's next.
My favorite product *was* the Whipped Gloss in Raisin Glow... I can't believe they discontinued it when they revamped their cosmetics line! :(
