40 Days and 40 Nights Of Beauty Brand Reviews
Day 37, Versace
Cavewoman: Gianni Versace cosmetics came and went very fast in the USA and I hear they are coming back. I couldn't be more delighted. What gorgeous, elegant packaging, from the powder compacts to the jars of skincare! I'll talk about the fragrances in a bit, but I want to rave here for a moment or two on the skincare line.
I found my first Versace items at the SoHo Sephora store, but in my daze of a first-time-ever-at-a-Sephora, I could barely focus, it was all overwhelming to me. One of the first displays I saw was Versace, with the Greek Key design surrounding the signature head of Medusa. I bought foundation and powder that day, not even noticing that there was skincare to be had!

Last year, in our local TJMaxx store, the Versace skincare started to appear, and I bought everything I could find. I was needing something more moisturizing and definitely needing an eye cream. I fell in love with the eye cream, which has the lightest texture and feels so smooth on the skin. It sinks right in and leaves my under-eye skin feeling hydrated but not sticky or oily in the least. Concealer goes on smoothly over top and stays where it is supposed to stay. The tiniest amount of the eye cream is enough for both eyes, and even after a year, I still have plenty remaining in the adorable little jar.
But my favorite item in the skincare line is the Hydra-Effective Gel. This super-lightweight, pale pale aqua cream-gel has the loveliest fresh scent to it, and is the perfect moisturizer for someone who doesn't require a heavy duty product. For warmer days here in Ohio, it is all I need under my primer. The gel has a very soft texture that turns liquidy when touched and smoothed onto my skin, it dries almost instantly, without grabbing or pulling. It's just the lightest moisturizer I've ever found, and I am hoarding my jar until the Versace line re-appears in the USA. If you know where I can find it, please tell!

On to Versace fragrances. There have been many over the years, and you might even have one of the Jeans series in your stash of fragrances. But my favorite will always be Gianni Versace For Woman, the sultry juice in the angular, faceted bottle. I remember the first time I wore it when Annie and I were going shopping. She couldn't stop commenting on it. Notes that I have found are spice notes, fruit note, bergamot, aldehydes, jasmine, narcissus, orris, tuberose, moss, benzoin, and leather. Gianni Versace For Women starts out with a touch of soapiness that I have found in many other Italian-made fragrances, and I love it. There is a richness to this scent, launched in 1981, that was just my style of fragrance. The bergamot is more flowery than juicy, flowers are lush and deep, and I don't know what the spices are, but I detect some church-incense spices. I am sure that it was the moss that had me buying within twenty minutes of spraying the tester, back in the year it launched, on a shopping trip to Saks in Pittsburgh, with my Mother and her best friend. This fragrance is not for the timid. But I'm not very timid. I'm pretty sure it is no longer available, but if I am going to review Versace, this perfume belongs in the review.
What are your favorite Versace products?
Please list them in the comments.
Bonus for the perfume junkies: List as many fragrances as you can spot in the Donatella photo. There is no prize...but just the envy of your peers.

Annie! I remember that issue of Vogue with that photo! I was using a magnifying glass to see everything in that cabinet! Guerlain bee bottles, Carons, Malles, Creeds, it was nothing short of amazing!!! Thanks for posting this photo!
Neiman Marcus discontinued carrying the Versace makeup line about 3 years ago. According to my salesgirl it wasn't selling very well at all. - I loved their lipstick and mascara, I was disappointed to see it go. Normally when TJMaxx or Marshalls starts to carry a fragrance or makeup line, it isn't a good thing.
Rumor has it that it will start to re-appear at Saks. I am hoping! This skincare is wonderful.
Annie - I wanted to commend you on such a great job you & your co-horts have done reviewing 40 lines in 40 days - You have probably the most information on the lines as a whole than I have ever seen - EVER! And I am a beauty blogger too - but your info and wealth of knowledge is astounding!
Job very well done!!!
I LOVED Versace Yellow Jeans; it was one of those special finds that smelled amazing on me but just "meh" on everyone else. Hee! I think it's the mimosa...my secret weapon. I'm so sad this one is gone. Wish they'd bring it back, but under a different name...the idea of "yellow jeans" is utterly ridiculous in 2007.
Thank you for posting that amazing photo of Donatella with her collection! One of my favorite fragrance-related images ever. :)
I have collected the powder compact.
i have purchased the lip gloss, sheer lipsticks, powder bronzer and eye shadow.
I did not like the fact that the lipsticks had no names. Such as red #342. ( makes one think of numbers given to prisoners).
But i do love the perfumes; Blonde is a favorite.
I wish her the best.
She has serious competition from the likes of ; Chanel, Chantecaille, Dior, Guerlain, and MAC. If i were her, i would go for the young demographic, Such as the 25 to 35 year old. Along the lines of Stella, MAC or Nars. Well that is my opinion.
Oh I just love your blog- My mother adored Gianni Versace for women fragrance- she has about 3 drops left. Is there any fragrance out there you think may be similiar? I'd love it to be a gift for mother's day. Thanks!!
Anon, you might try Opium by YSL for your mom, I can't think of anything else that comes close and even this isn't close, but it's the same type of scent.
Oh this is good news. I'd love for the line to make a reappearance! I was not particularly motivated to buy the skincare stuff, but the makeup was fantastic. Especially their red lipsticks :)
I have really loved your 40 days of reviews - I look forward to it daily. I have to say, your love of Nars brought me back to the counter the other day, and I really do love their make up. Have you tried any of their skincare and what do you think of it?
Anon: I love Nars skincare. I have not tried everything but I am addicted to their brightening serum. It feels amazing and smells like a fresh glass of orange juice. I use it every morning to get a little life into my face.
Koneko did an amazing blog post on her last Nars skincare haul. Scroll through my link list and you will find her!
I promise to review more skincare soon. It is something that the blog is lacking.
Just wanted to say that this 40 brands idea is fab! Your blog is one of the sites I visit first thing everyday :)
I totally agree with the addict...Yellow Jeans is a great scent.
I LOVE that pic of Donatella w/ her perfume collection! I think I have it somewhere! I'm gonna have to do some detective work, but I definitely remember Guerlain, Caron, Creed, Malles, etc. too. I haven't tried the Versace skincare, but I have TWO gorgeous lippies(from Cosmetics Market). One is a sheer gold, and the other a sheer silver. They are stunning to layer or wear on their own. I hope to see the Versace stuff come back! :)
Hearing Versace cosmetics may come back is as good as the best words of salvation. My stash of powder foundation compacts is dwindling, and I haven't found any product comes close to what this stuff does for my cranky face. Woo hoo!
I remember that Vogue story!! I remember reading dreamy-eyed and thinking of busting out a wall to make lovely beauty storage like hers. I just thought it was all a dream come true. Aaaahhhh...thanks for taking me back! I didn't know about the line -- I hope it comes back too!

Thanks Chase!
I hope Versaceman sees this post!
I have a difficult time finding the right color foundation and Versace was just what I needed. Loved the color, texture and the coverage was wonderful. I was so disappointed when I could no longer find it. Please, please let us know if/when the foundation might be available again. I would fly to Europe just to buy it!!!! I have only a few drops left!
