Anita Roddick founder of The Body Shop passed away on Monday....

From the NYTimes:
"I started the Body Shop simply to create a livelihood for myself and my two daughters while my husband, Gordon, was trekking across the Americas," she wrote. "I had no training or experience ..."

She said she drew inspiration from women's beauty rituals that she discovered while traveling in developing countries, and lessons that her mother passed on from life during World War II.

"Why waste a container when you can refill it? And why buy more of something than you can use? We behaved as she did in the Second World War, we reused everything, we refilled everything and we recycled all we could," Roddick wrote.

She joked that the Body Shop's trademark green color scheme came about by accident because it was the only color that could cover the mold on the walls of her first shop.

In her honor..please post your favorite Body Shop products in the comments.

I was a fan of her colorings foundation and body butter. The day that they discontinued the foundation was a sad day in this household. This was actually the first beauty product I ever hoarded.

They had a shower oil that I fell in love with. Moisturizing, yummy smelling and not oily at all. I would buy 6 at a time! The discontinued this one, too. It was a sad day when I no longer had that product in my shower. Very sad of her death. Wasn't she relatively young?

I remember when The Body Shop first arrived in New York CIty. Such excitement! My college roommate and I were fascinated. We'd never seen anything like it before. Banana shampoo?! Japanese washing grains for the face?! How cool! Some of the original products were/are still my favorites: chamomile eye makeup remover, peppermint foot cream, blue corn mask... and I did go through an avid Dewberry phase. :)

Growing up, The Body Shop was always more exciting to me than the ever present Bath and Body Works that were in every mall. A Body Shop was harder to find, so maybe that was part of the appeal. I felt, and still feel, that The Body Shop was more "grown up" and their items more luxe and lavish. I used to love getting the catalogs - every Christmas my parents would get me one of the gift baskets. My favorite products are their body butters, lip balms, and shower gels.

geez, where to I start? I used to work for the body shop so I know them well. I used their milk shower gel as the best shave cream ever until it was discontinued. The gingerlily shower gel smelled amazing, and they made the best lavender ever (the ones in the clear bottles, not the green ones). Loved Indian Gardenia, and now I hoard cranberry every Xmas. Body butter and hemp hand cream are staples and I miss the Japanese washing grains. Ok, I'm done. Really.

I first went to a Body Shop in Berkeley, CA--the products were so pure and intense. Loved the recycling idea too. This was long before they were in every mall and airport, though. Lovely stuff and my fave was a vitamin E creamy moisturizer that was pink and wonderful.

"In 1970, Anita Perella and Gordon Roddick (who would later marry) visited the San Francisco Bay Area, and encountered a store on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley selling shampoos, lotions, and body creams. The store, founded by two local entrepreneurs and called "The Body Shop", publicized environmental concerns, and offered customers discounts for bringing in their own bottles instead of using new ones from the store. The original "Body Shop" business continues in the Bay Area as a small chain under the name "Body Time", a name they adopted after they sold Roddick the US rights to the "Body Shop" name in the early 1980s." Anita Roddick, a true original.

I coveted their items in high school more than any other. I am still a fan of Body Butter. It always made me feel pampered.

Thank you for that.

The cocoa butter lip care stick is still one of my absolutely essential products after all these years- my only trouble is that they're almost always out of it whenever I visit the Beachwood store.

The praises would have been more numerous (at least in the UK; I don't know about tributes elsewhere), if she hadn't sold out at the end. It's a shame.

I liked their wax pencil for stopping lipstick from 'bleeding'. And their Hawthorn hand cream was nice.

White Musk Chiffon Sheer Body Mist and Mango Dry Oil Mist are my favorites. I like the Oceanus Body Mist too and the Japanese washing grains for face were really great (they're no longer available here in Italy :-( ...don't know if they're still in the catalogue elsewhere...)

BODY BUTTERS AND OILS. I LOVE SATSUMA.

My must have is the tea tree oil blemish stick. (the brazil nut body scrub deserves an honorary mention. And my current favourite is the satsuma body butter.)

Thank you for all these wonderful stuff Anita. You'll be missed.

Tee tree oil facial wash is better than any more upscale product for mixed skin, and their carrot cream was really good. The shea body butter is the best for dry skin in winter.

Oh wow...She will be truly missed...

I loved the Ananya and Leap scent lines. I'm always hunting that down on MUA Swap and Ebay. I remember when that those body butters first came out. I would drive from Rock Hill to Southpark Mall in Charlotte just to go the BS and I worked across the hall from it later on when I worked at AT in the same mall. I could always find something in there to lift my spirits...

My favorite product is their wooden foot-massager.

I found this great article the other day about Anita, so I thought I would share in honor of her memory:

I met Anita 10 days before her death personally. She was a wonderful person and she will always stay in my mind.

Hawthorn hand cream was my favourite - a shame it's been discontinued.

I have been using the Ananya perfume oil for over 14 years and I'm devastated by the decision to discontinue it. but I can honestly say I appreciate the body shop so much for all their products and the kindness of the staff. I have never felt so welcomed and comfortable as I have in their stores. I hope they bring back some items.

Hawthorn Hand Cream. Why do all the best things in life get to be discontinued?
