40 Days and 40 Nights of Beauty Cult Classics
Day 4, Urban Decay Primer Potion Lotion
This product is beloved by so many friends, bloggers and makeupalley members. It inspires great love among all beauty addicts and junkies.
So it might shock you when I say that I can not stand this product.
Yep.
Bring on the backlash.
I gave it a good test run for several months. I would apply it in the morning and periodically whip out my mirror throughout the day to check on it's progress. I asked co-workers what they thought.
It was a bust...every single day.
My shadow would fade and lose all its oomph. It would crease and flake.
I did better with no primer at all.
Instead of giving up like a normal person...I insisted on making this darn tube work. I did not want to throw in the towel since it appeared to be a holy grail institution for so many people. As God as my witness, I was not going to be the only person it did not work for.
I fought this war with the primer and never won a battle.
My eyelids are not extraordinary creatures. They suffer no problems with excessive oil or dryness. They can handle anything I throw on them like glitter or hot wax.
They manage fairly well with just a smidge of Smashbox primer mixed in with my concealer. This applies less tacky then the Primer Potion and provides better results.
Primer Potion is a sheer nude eye base based in an adorable but wildly irksome genie-like tube. This design actually traps quite a bit of product.
Both Clumps of Mascara and Beauty Addict have posted on the issue.
Make sure to visit Clumps to see just how much.
It will make your jaw drop.
I realize that I am quite alone in this negative verdict. The MUA score on this product is a 91%, which is very high.
Please delurk if you have any disatisfaction with this product. Make me feel not so alone in my disappointment with Primer Potion.
Lovers feel free to post your gushing and love in the comments too.
Just try to not pour salt in my wounds.....

UDPP seems to work by absorbing oil - hence it's rep as a godsend for the oily-lidded. If your skin there is pretty normal, it might be that UDPP dries your eyelids out, hence the flaking? Fixing what ain't broke, etc.
You know, I never liked this product much either...and I thought I was the only one! Thanks for sharing!
IMO, the best eyeshadow primer out there is the MAC Paint in Bare Canvas. I know it's meant to be an eyeshadow on its own, but it seriously is a great primer!
Ha! Hi, Annie. Well, this product does work well for me... despite the cute-but-impractical packaging. But you know what works even better? Lumene's eye makeup primer. It sells for about half the price of UDPP, at CVS and other drugstores.
i too don't think anything positive of udpp. it makes it harder to put on eye shadow! not to mention i don't like the applicator.
i use beauti control's shadow control cream. i love it. and it lasts for ever (and comes in a tube). i realize i might be the only person on MUA to use any beauti control product, though!
I am an oily-lidded girl -- even "non-creasing formula!" stuff (like Benefit's cream shadows) creases on me.
So while it does make application a little harder (I find UDPP makes my eyelids a little more snaggy, if that's a good word for it? The application isn't as smooth), the benefit of having my eyeshadow stay all day is worth the extra effort in the application. Yesterday my eyeshadow lasted through twelve hours, including bright lights and walking outdoors, before I took it off.
I did find that it doesn't work under cream shadows (like the Benefit ones, again), though, as it made the shadow crease even more. So maybe mich's comment about the oil could be right.
Also, it does have latex in it -- some people are allergic/sensitive to latex, so this isn't a good product for people with that sensitivity.
Hi Annie!
UDPP works for me, but I'm so annoyed at the packaging that I tried the Lumene instead. And I also found that the Lumene works better.
i haven't used this product consistently enough to tell but so far i don't this will be a repurchase!
I have never tried it! but the bottle looks great!
Annie,
I HATE this product. I purchased it after hearing so many HG stories and was excited to see what this "miracle" product was all about. Well it's all about setting the skin on my lids on fire. I was able to ignore the pain long enough to apply shadow over the primer and I hated how it looked. My tried and true shadow looked like a clumpy mess, it made blending almost impossible and my shadow looked no where near as nice as WITHOUT UDPP.
Next time I get the bug to try this product I'll just rub alcohol on my eye lids and call it a day.
For me powder foundation, cream shadow, foundation or even Becca Eye Tint all make better primers and have no reaction issues for me.
Those with sensitive skin BEWARE!!!!!!!!! UPDD is the Devil in a lavender genie bottle!
You are DEFINITELY not alone! I don't care for the texture of this at all, but not only did this not keep my eyeshadow from creasing, it really dried out my lids. I agree with Jenny above -- MAC Paint in Bare Canvas is the best I've ever used and puts UDPP to *shame*.
Oh my gosh, same for me! Just didn't seem to do a darn thing for me. I have no real issues-just normal lids!
not a fan, either. i find a little concealer+powder works better for me.
Well. It does seem to make my eyeshadow last longer. But not only does it allow my eyeshadow to crease, sometimes this product causes creases even before I apply any shadow. So no, I won't be re-purchasing. I'll try one of thes products recommended here!
I don't wear much eyeshadow, but I was sucked into buying this product by all the glowing reviews. But I didn't really see the big deal! It made my lids kind of sticky, and the shadow applied unevenly... I wish I still had the receipt so I could return this to Sephora.
Don't worry, you are not alone on your opinion of UDPP.
I had been dying to try this for MONTHS, then finally my little Sephora started carrying it up at the registers (mine does not carry the whole UD line). I had planned to swatch it on my hand and then proceed to swatch-a-thon in the store to see how it held up.
However...when it came in contact with my skin, it burned.
Burned, burned, burned.
I ran over to the make up remover and scrubbed it off. How could something with so much priase hurt SO BAD?! I was disappointed, I really wanted to try it, buy it, and fall in love with it.
But, it turns out that I'm perfectly fine with my L'Oreal De-Crease and WnW Cream Eyeshdow tube which works fab to stop oil and keep my shadow lasting all day :)
Never tried UDPP, Urban Decay is not available in my county, so can't comment on this part.
But I swear by Artdeco's eyeshadow base which I've been using for years. It keeps eyeshadow on as long as you don't wash it off basically and in any circumstance, party, hot&cold weather etc.
Without it, any shadow creases on me eyes in a couple of hours, even the most expensive ones. And MAC Paint Pot doesn't do the job for me, neither does Lancome's Color Dose.
I hope they never discontinue by beloved Artdeco...
I love you guys!!!!!
I really thought I was alone with this.
I need to try the Artdeco product.
It sounds promising....
Had to try UDPP with all the hype. Had been using Disguise for eyes by Alexandra de Markoff for a loooong time, but it is hard to find and apparently no longer sold in the US. UDPP seems to work but does not cancel out any discoloration on eyelids like I am used too with Disguise. Definetly not worth the adoration. If you can find Disguise for eyes PURCHASE!! The 0.5 oz jar will last you for years even with daily application.
This really works for me and is fantastic when it comes to absorbing oils. Eyeshadows have always creased on me and i found that UDPP is definitely on my top list of beauty faves. I guess one girls treasure is another girl's rubbish!
I have a super oily lid but this product doesn't do anything for me. I can't wear most eyeshadows because they fade about an hour or two into my day. I'm test driving a sample of Trish McEvoy's eye base (relatively new I think) and it's doing wonderfully.
I do like the way this keeps crease-prone shadows from creasing and fading, but I've found things are harder to blend, and the shimmer factor is diminished. Don't know that I'll re-purchase . . . will probably just stick to shadows that don't crease on me, like Bobbi Brown.
Hi Annie, I don't like this product that much. It doesn't work that well and sometimes the product comes out goopey & clumpy. I've been Chanel's Professional Eyeshadow Base and I like it so much better than Urban Decay.
I've been using some teeny little sample bottles of UDPP I got from Sephora, they're better than nothing, but not great (I have dry skin but everything creases on my eyelids).
Next I plan to try Guerlain's Protective Base for Eyelids which also scores good reviews on MUA. Haven't tried it yet, though, so can't say yea or nay!
It doesn't work for me either!
I have relatively oily lids, but my problem isn't oil so much as water or something. EVERYTHING smudges on me. I have yet to find an eyeliner that doesn't. And UDPP doesn't help like they say it does. It flakes on me too.
I lost my bottle of UDPP, and sadly, I'm not too distraught, sans the price.
Heads Up for anonymous who longs for the deMarkoff, please call Lord & Taylor in NYC and ask for the deMarkoff counter! Yes, it's still sold in the USA!
And I love it, too!
I am another UDPP-hater. I couldn't even get the stuff on smoothly enough to begin with, and it made my shadow look blotchy and uneven.

hmmm, I always think of this as a product of last resort. I never used it until I noticed that no matter what I did (use concealer, powder, MAC paints, etc) my eyeshadow would crease like mad, every single day. I made the switch and all is well. I don't understand why gals who don't have oiler-than-all-get-out would even bother to use this product.
egad, there are others of my kind out there! thank gawd, i was kinda scared there's something wrong with me lids!
that said, smashbox primer works wonders as eye primer, and i think people haven't given it a try yet (silicone-on-lid phobia, anyone?)
Annie dear, I haven't tried this but ... latex?? oh my, with my sensitive skin I would NEVER risk even a small amount. I am not sensitive to latex but that is a reaction that can build over time, which is why isn't used in hospitals anymore. Eeek!
I also wanted to say that this is my favorite 40 days and Nights series so far, I am eating it up. Keep it coming!
I tried it and hated it. ITA with this post. Not worth you $$$$ IMHO!
Go purchase a L'Oreal paint for $11.99. It will last longer, you will get your $$ worth and be much happier!
i don't like it. there i said it! on me, it makes my eyelids dry, my shadow go on dusty and it is impossible to blend any eye colors together on top of it! i actually don't have any problem at all with eyeshadow disappearing on me without ever using a primer, but like you, i had to try it out and see what all the HUGE fuss was about. i can see how this would be a godsend for someone with oily lids and disappearing makeup, but it doesn't do anything good for me.
I guess I'm warped because I'm so used to using this that I LITERALLY can't remember a time without it.. I don't have an uber-oily eye area unless I'm fresh from a brow wax, so why do I bother?
Tomorrow, I'm going to go UDPP-less for the first time in years, and see what it's like. Thanks for the inspiration!
My eyelids get slightly oily, and I always have a problem with eye makeup migrating below my eyes...UDPP works wonders. I've tried the MAC Paint Bare Canvas but it tends to dry out my lids and flake.
This primer is a little too dry, streaky, uneven and light. I mean, I'm sure the white-ish tone is meant to serve as a base to allow your shadows too really pop, but it just makes me look like I put shadow over my ashy lids. LOL It may have something to do with my skin being chocolate- hued, but I find that concealers work better on my lids than UDPP.

I bought udpp because everyone i know and everyone that i don't know, had rave reviews about it. So i tried it. IT actually made my eyeshadow last all day, and look great. So i thought i had found a great product. After 2 days of using it. My eyes constantly burn, itch, hurt, screaming pain. I want to not use it anyone. But since i paid 22 for the XL bottle and 8 dollars for shipping. I don't want to just throw away 30 dollars. I might make myself suffer, for good looks for a while. Just so i feel i got my money worth! :(
