40 Days and 40 Nights Of Beauty Cult Classics
Day 35, Chanel Vamp Nail Polish

The whole dark nail trend can trace it's beginnings backstage at a Chanel show. The makeup artist had previously done a pre-show shoot with models sporting black nails created by a magic marker. The shade created a buzz. For the runway show, the makeup artist mixed a batch of almost black nail polish for 45 models.
Vamp and the waiting list was born.
Finding a bottle in the USA was an impossible task back in 1994.
The polish was a huge financial success for Chanel with sales rumored to exceed one million.
The shade spawned countless dupes and ushered in the era of fashion nail polish.

Vamp was my college nail shade.
I would wear 3 to 4 coats to achieve the rich black glossy shade. It would look like black cherry in the sun.

Tell me your thoughts on Chanel Vamp nail polish in the comments.

Blogdorf, you are a genius to put up that fabulous movie clip! The instant I saw today's Cult Classic item, I thought of that very scene!

Just adding here that Chanel made a Vamp Joues Contraste blush for a very short time. I have it. I'm scared to wear it.

Thanks for the most fabulous Cult post today!!!

hi Annie!

great series on the cult classics, I've got my pen and paper handy! I always associated dark nail polish with subcultures.

Maybe from living in New York that whole not washing hair, madonna Desperately Seeking Susan style a la 80's. I totally missed the 94 revival, I was just out of the Navy and working through college with not a dime to spare so maybe that's why.

Keep up the great posts!

I owned several knockoff versions of Vamp. A friend let me borrow her real Vamp once, and although the colour was amazing I remember that it chipped really quickly, much moreso than my cheap copies.

Now I want to paint my nails deep and dark.

I recently bought Vamp and I really like it. I hope to make it my Fall and early winter staple nail polish!

in spring 1995 I visited friends in London, my bottle of vamp in tow. My friend's roomate did backflips when she saw it and we had a grand time painting our nails and drinking wine. Vamp was nowhere to be had in London & she was planning on being the envy of all her friends! What fun!!!!

I was on a waiting list for Vamp in 1995- about 4-6 weeks. It's my favorite all-time nail color, although I remember it took forever to dry.

i remmember the uma thurman movie that sparked off the vamp crazed...mom wasnt interested in letting me use np at that age...let alone buy me a chanel np...fast forward...bought 1 bottle of rouge noir #18 in london (london doesnt have vamp) but according to mua its the same np & although it took ages to dry n chip real fast... I fell in love with dark vampy colours...

love ur cult posts btw!

Annie, you are taking me back. I loved Vamp. I still do. I always buy a new bottle each fall. I remember Madonna wearing it in the Take a Bow video, but Uma definitely rocked it well.

Great colour, but Chanel polish is such poor quality. It applies smoothly, but chips really fast. How unfortunate! Despite this, Vamp is definitely an obsession of mine...

I remember loving Vamp, too - buying it back in the Bombay days from Kaufmann's. I remember buying another Chanel polish, too, around that time - it was like a Vamp "off-shoot" - still by Chanel though. Does this ring any bells? I could be wrong...

Now I remember...it was "Metallic Vamp" - that silvery-purple shade.

If anyone knows where to get the Chanel Vamp Blush, please email me at tahialameer@yahoo.com

It's been discontinued for years.

Thank you.
