MAC's StarFlash Collection
This is the latest eyeshadow collection currently at your local MAC counter. This formula is creamy, highly pigmented with a pearly finish. It has all the power of a pigment and feels like a sliver of velvet. I thought the colors looked familiar until I tested them side by side with their dupes. Talent Pool is nothing like Parrot. This sparked a lengthy discussion at my local counter. Smoke & Diamonds will cause beauty junkies to argue. Is it a taupe or is it gray?
It straddles the line between both.
It is genius along the lines of Lancome's Erika F.
Is it as good as Erika F?
I would say No.
I would say No.
However, it is gorgeous and should be snatched up before it disappears. I think it has the potential to be legendary.
Star By Night: A mid toned blue. This is very metallic to my eye.
LotusLand is a pinkish lilac. The pigment power is not as strong as the other shadows. It is whispery and pretty. I have posted two photos of Lotusland. The first one is without flash.
Top Hat is described as a dirty indigo. I thought it was a smokey blue violet. The MAC SA's layered this shade with Smoke & Diamonds. It was gorgeous!
Sunset B is a mid tone pink. This is brighter than Pink Papillon. It is less metallic than the Fuchsia pigment.
MAC always surprises me with their pinks. Just when you think that they can not create another unique pink...they go and do just that.
Mink & Sable is an olive shade. However it is more olive than MAC's Sumptious Olive. It is very close to Bobbi Brown's Metallic eye shadow in Forest. Close but not exact. There is more yellow in MAC. There is more shimmer in Bobbi Brown.
Smoke & Diamonds is described as a frosty dirty taupe. It is mouse-like. I have been testing it against Lancome's Erika F, MAC's Sweet Sienna, Becca's Lame, Shu Uemura's ME Brown 850, Prescriptives Smoking Gun, Estee Lauder's Mocha Cup and Stila's Diamond Lil. The shade that comes close is Diamond Lil.
Dreammaker is the sleeper hit of the collection. This is a frosty yellow gold that does not rely on shimmer or spark. There is no coin or metal in this shade which makes it unique.
MAC makes the best teals on the market. Many have said that Talent Pool comes close to Parrot. I think it has way more green and gold in it. There is also a metallic sheen to the formula. My local MAC SA used it as a liner. It was like the bright crystal- clear water in Bora Bora. This is perfect for the remaining month of summer.
Grand Entrance is described as a neutral peach beige. I thought it was champagne-like but without the pink.
Bold & Brazen is a copper with some red and pink thrown in. I thought it was copperplate-like.
Go is described as a frosted bronze. I think it is more a standard mink brown.
Glamour Check is reddish brown. The pigment power on this one is "out of this world" amazing! If you are a brown shadow gal...you need to add this to your collection.
These retail for $14.50 and are currently at your local MAC counter or online. If you are lollygagging on Smoke & Diamonds...you are playing a dangerous game my friend. This will not last long. My other picks for "sell out" status is Dreammaker and Top Hat.

I ordered my Smoke and Diamonds, so I'm safe there. I can't wait to get it! I checked it out in the store yesterday [I had already ordered it] and it was just dreamy.
I am a little confused by the description of Bold and Brazen, do you mean it reminds you of an actual copper plate, or that it reminds you of the MAC eyeshadow Copperplate? Because MAC's Copperplate is gray with no shimmer. [Sorry, I am posting pre-caffeine which may be dangerous.]
Thanks so much for posting the pictures of the collection, they reveal so much more about the color and texture than the MAC site images.
=)
LOL...I meant a real piece of copper. I forgot all about MACs copperplate. I might have to edit that!
I was really impressed with these. I am wearing smoke& diamonds today. I am mixing it up with a new shade from the Bobbi Brown metallic collection. It is called Brown Stone. BTW: This collection is also FABULOUS. I love it!
Annie, I am among the debaters as to what the true color of S&D is. Truly, I sit at my desk and look at my eyes in my hand-mirror once every 35 minutes trying to decide if it's silver or taupe. I paired it today with Femme-Fi from the Neo Sci-Fi collection and it looks more taupe than when used as a wash all over my lid (it looks more silver then). I want both Top Hat and Dream Maker. They were both gorgeous, and I agree that Top Hat is a purple.
Now that I have had caffeine, I realize that actual copper is so obviously the intention. That will teach me to read before having my coffee!
Thanks Annie, now I need Top Hat and Glamour Check. But I also want to see what else is in the Cherry Collection...
Fall just seems to be the time for all the dreamy palettes and colors to come out.
I have smoke & Diamonds and swatched it on my site. I LOVE it. I absolutely LOVE it. The creaminess of the shadow is what gets me. I love the formula. I wonder if MAC will create more with that formula?
Interesting description of S&D as "mouse-like." Regardless, I purchased it yesterday and can't wait to try it on--after the Tropical Storm of course.

I would kindly disagree with the comparison between ink & sable and BB forest. I recently bought both & found mink & sable to be a closer cousin of MAC sumptuous olive, although not an exact dupe by any means. I found BB forest to be a passable alternative to NARS nightclubbing, but with a deep olive base instead of black (pair it w/ MAC goldmine for a truly lovely smoky eye for fall). I totally agree with your finding that Stila Diamond lil is very similar to S&D, the one difference is the finish. S&D has more of a brushed aluminum rather than straightforward metallic finish. The LORAC multi-platinum palette has a sheerer, shinier twin of S&D as well.
I ended up passing on S&D because I already own & love Diamond Lil (I ran to sephora to swatch it & then ran back to Macy's to compare!). I bought Mink & Sable, Bold& Brazen, will soon acquire Glamour Check (I think this will pair very well with Coppering & B&B as well as some of my NARS duos like Balthazar or Star Sailor).
Love your blog!
I bought Go, Smoke and Diamonds, Bold and Brazen and Glamour Check. S&D is actually my least favorite! It shows up very green; not enough taupe in it to satisfy me.
Go isn't very mink brown on - it's more yellow (which is strange) but it's incredible with S&D.
I'm praying MAC makes these perm, or else I may need backups!!
I want them all. Smoke and Diamonds look loooovely. Do you think it'll look alright on blue eyes and fair skin? Sometimes silvers have a little too much oomph for day if you know what i mean. thanks!
I have my Smoke & Diamonds and I got so many complements on it today. It is dreamy.
Also, Target has salon hair care on sale for $12.99! I just bought Bumble&Bumble products for $12.99 each as well as a gift set of 24 ounce Biosilk shampoo, conditioner, and cure soyeuse at $12.99 for the set of three. Amazing!
I was too excited in my last post, the Biosilk was 11.6 ounces... still a big bottle!
