Tripping with Chanel
I am planning a trip next month to the big apple. I am trying to pack light to have enough room for purchases that will range from a boatload of beauty products to most likely a coat or two.
Chanel has come out with a beauty kit for the more frazzled world weary traveler. The kit includes the following:
Chanel sleep mask
Hydramax + Active Serum Active Moisture Boost
Soin Tendres Levres Hydra Treatment Lip Care SPF 15
Pro Lumiere Correcteur Professional Finish Concealer in Medium
Inimitable Mascara Multi-Dimensionnel in Noir-Black, and a mini Levres Scintillantes Glossimer in Seashell.
It retails for $175 and comes in a Chanel makeup bag with a removable, full-size clear insert that keeps beauty products safe and easy to spot.
This will help with those frantic moments when you can not locate your mini-skunk brush or MAC Pleasantry blush. It is inevitable that I will have to dump out my makeup bags at least a dozen times during my trip.
Does anyone have any suggestions for packing light when it comes to beauty products? I tend to overpack. I am just always worried that I will need to do a smoky eye at a moments notice.

I cannot wait to hear all the tips from Blogdorf readers! I swear we should take the most minimum amount of makeup items with us because we're probably going to do some major hauling. I have absolutely no idea what to bring!
My tip. Palettes. Pick one or 2 versatile palettes that will take you from Pollyanna sweet to Smokey eye Sultry in seconds. Buy or beg for sample sizes of your skincare, haircare and even makeup and leave out the 15 blushes you are tempted to bring and pack 2 (one cream one powder). If you find yourself without, then it's an excuse to buy it there! Lastly, think about mailing back your purchases it may be less than the extra baggage fee from the airlines. Oh yeah. I'M SOOOO JEALOUS! TAKE ME WITH YOU!!
Hey there! I LOVE your blog, and I don't think I have ever commented before, but I just had to on this one!
I can't help you with traveling lighter - but I can sympathize. I just got done with a Saturday-Wednesday trip to Vermont and I just could not figure out what to leave behind! Of course I way overpacked on beauty items, and I wondered if everyone who loved these things did the same.
Anyhow, I hope someone answers with a wonderful suggestion. :) Have a fantastic Monday.
Taupes for eyes, you can smoke them out or apply with a light touch for a day look, 1 nude and 1 red lippie, plus your everyday "essentials".
I agree with Pink Sith, PALETTES! I tend to bring a palette or two, a day lip, a night lip, mascara, and my brushes. I have mini versions of my skincare, but tend to bring the full size of my conditioner and use the hotel shampoo.
I concur with elvira. I pack two palettes myself which give me enough eyeshadow and blush options for the trip. I also try to negate the urge to pack all of my eyeliners by reminding myself that I can always turn my eyeshadows into eyeliner with water and a small angled brush. So I limit it to Fluidline in Blacktrack and Clinique Brush-on cream liner in Bronze for eyeliner. Then I pack mascara and three lip options: a good day time color that's not a nude, a nude to pair with a smoky eye and a red nighttime going out shade. And one lip balm. For brushes- an all over eyeshadow color brush, one for the crease, an angled brush for eyeliner, blush brush and powder brush. Those are the only real essentials in my book. And I pack foundation, translucent powder and a double-ended concealer for under my eyes and anywhere else it needs to go. I also use any small sizes of toiletries I may have around the house. I don't really like buying smaller sizes and samples just for the convenience because it's wasteful, but that's up to you. You could consider buying small reusable plastic bottles and filling them with your products, so you don't have a ton of giant bottles with you. And that will cut down on the waste, if that's important to you. Okay, I think that's it for my packing ideas!
Check out EasyLooks sets at http://www.beautyexpert.co.uk/Smokey-Eyes-PRODEAMU3/. Little bubbles of make up in a strip - base, concealer, blush and eyes in a great quality creamy formula. I've used these and wanted the full size of everything...which they don't do. Pure pocket pretty. BBBx
I've been traveling a lot lately and just did a story on what/how to pack beauty items. Check it out - http://www.faboverforty.com/2008/10/travel-beauty-musts.html
And I agree- always leave room for packing more - and even ship it home from the stores - your sales tax may be less as well, so that can make up for shipping costs.
I always travel with a Chanel Eye quad rather than individual shadows. That saves me room!
Also I love Bobbi Brown travel brushes with short handles.
Totally 4th or 5th the palettes idea. Chanel and NARS have blushes in theirs as well , and some Bobbi Browns do. Also, sample packets. If you can get by with a few sample packets of eye cream , etc. then you can use and throw away.
You know you'll be buying :)
I wish i could see you guys, I will email to get the dates. But I have plans to be there in early Dec. so most likely can't get there before that . :(
i'm heading over to nyc thursday!! is there any can't miss spots i should visit? please let me know!!
If you have travel brushes, use those. I bought a MAC set during the Nordstrom event, and love it for travel. The extra room just from shorter handles is surprising. Also, just bring brushes that can do double duty (angled brush for eyeliner and brows), and use something like quick brush wipes to clean in between.
As for makeup, multi-purpose colors are essential. A powder eyeshadow that can be used as liner (wet or dry). Taupes that can be layered for more intensity. Maybe a smudgy eyeliner pencil for a quick smokey eye. It's amazing what you can live without when traveling, as long as you are willing to experiment.
Lipstick/gloss: something nude, something pink, something dark (red, plum, what have you).
Travel bottles that you can refill are a must! I travel a lot, and refuse to buy samples that I am just going to throw the packaging away when I'm done. Little jars are great for facial cleanser and moisturizer. Bottles are shampoo and conditioner. Conditioner can double as shaving cream in a pinch, too.
I like Nars Multiples - you don't need to take a blush brush. I take that, mascara, eyeliner, and a couple lipglosses. If you need anything else, buy it in NYC!
I love the Bobbi Brown Stonewashed Nudes for travel. The dark shade can double as an eyeliner, or can be used as a heavy smoke color. The rest of the palette has enough neutrals to rock the rest of the eye out. This is one of the few palettes that has ideal travel brushes that come with it--the eyeliner brush actually works well and the eyeshadow brush is good quality for a travel-sized brush. It's also a really slim palette (the Lancome eye ones are small too--the Dior ones seem huge by comparison!)
If you must bring color, consider the Shu metal empty palette. It's outrageously priced for an empty palette ($30) but has a great mirror and is metal and therefore crush-proof. You can select which ever Shu eyeshadows you like, including their ME Black which will work as an eyeliner color as well. The palette can also be configured to hold Shu blushes of course, or any other shape that you can fit into the thing.
I bring one bronzer, which I can use as a nude blush if necessary and one pink blush. I used to bring more but really, that just about does it. I stick to lipsticks rather than glosses in case I need to do carry-on luggage (no need for a baggie for lipstick!).
I keep a few sample sized moisturizers and mini-size bottles for packing toner & face scrub. You can get tiny hairsprays in the travel section of drug stores, and Pure Beauty actually has a great selection of mini-hair-products.
Mascara is tricky-I'm assuming this is a "liquid" so I usually can't avoid the baggie for it for flights.
Keep an eye out for GWP bags--Nordstrom usually has good ones, L'Occitaine as well. There's no way I can bring a train case of cosmetics, these smaller bags work well (and the freebie Sephora bags are great for hair and skin stuff.
That's all I can remember for now! FYI, for travel to europe, I did break down last summer and bought a 220 v. straightener. Folica sells them, so do the Euro electronics stores as well as Sephora.
Hi there! Long-time reader, but I've never actually left a comment before. I work at Sephora, and couldn't help but comment!
I love the Bobbi Brown and Smashbox shadow palettes - both give options that you can combine, but don't give you colors that you won't use. Tarte has a day-to-night palette with 8 shadows in varying shades, 2 double-ended brushes and a liner - perfect for travel. I also always bring a lip and cheek stain - the Stila Cherry Crush is beautiful, or you can always go for old standbys like Benetint or the Vincent Longo gel stains. I try to bring a Nars double-ended gloss or two as well. For primers, Laura Gellar makes a spackle trio with her lip, eye and face primers all in one little package!
Enjoy your trip!
One of Bobbi Brown's 2x2" empty palettes comes in very handy. Fill it with your concealer and favorite lip glosses and lipsticks. I also like Shu Uemura's individually wrapped cotton swabs/makeup applicators. They are clean and not fuzzy from all that movement in your makeup bag.I also travel with a Chanel full face palette. Lip colors can be deepened by filling in your entire lip with a lip pencil and applying lipstick or gloss on top; smokier eyes achieved with a dark eye pencil. I concur that those mini makeup brushes are a godsend!
Have been lurking on your blog for a while, and am coming out to let you know that it is fabulous. I really love it!!!
My tip would be to buy a nice palette. The Bobbi Brown Mauve one is my travel companion. Decant all your beauty stuff into small containers. And bring solid alternatives where possible to maximize room in your clear bag for airport security.
Omg, you need to check out the tarte day to night palette: http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P216910&categoryId=B70
this is seriously the best thing I've ever bought from sephora. It's great for day, because the neutrals are extremely useable, and I get the BEST smokey eyes from this palette. Plus the brush is AMAZING.
Trish McEvoy palettes, for example "The Little Black Card" pack a variety of products into a Tiny space - I don't leave home without them!
