Cheap & Cheerful: MAC Skincare
Review of Prep+Prime Skin Refined Zone
MAC's skincare products have been steadily improving in quality. From the gone but not forgotten Volcanic Ash Exfoliator to the Fix+Rose, MAC skincare is selling out just as fast as a dazzleglass or limited edition eye shadow.
I am currently testing Prep+Prime Skin Refined Zone. This is the latest edition in their primer series. This is a "partial primer designed for use in the T-Zone." It has a lightweight, soy based formula that mattifies on the skin. It helps minimize pores and controls shine. There is some "high tech optics" science going on in this little black tube. It contains advanced technology infused powder that fills in lines while creating a "smoke and mirrors effect". It sounds slightly kooky. You imagine that there will be some kind of "Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds" effect. A very glamorous blurring of the face. Click on the youtube clip of the commercial to see what I am yammering about.
There is no blurring but just a slight difference in the skin. Pores seem to be closed for business. They are still there but your makeup is not sitting and glistening in their crater. MAC Prep+Prime Skin Refined Zone also contains a Mannose-Phosphate blend that gently exfoliates and silica particles to absorb oil. This product is said to reduce the actual size of pores over time. I have not witness any miracles but have been pleased with the results so far.
I have been having problems with my makeup these last few months. My primers and foundations appeared to go wonky on me. My makeup was disappearing or caking within hours. It made me look haggard and old. My current successful skin routine involves MAC moisturizer, MAC Prep+Prime Skin Refiner Zone, Prescriptives Super Line Preventor Xtreme Lifting Concentrate and MUFE HD foundation. This cocktail seems to be working. Makeup stays fresh and on my face.
Prep+Prime Skin Refined Zone retails for $17.50 and is currently available at your local MAC counter.

The idea of a primer for specific areas only has me amused, but then I have to admit that my makeup hasn't been the best lately either. I've been using Face Time Velvet Veil, and I've noticed that my blush seems to be sliding away, shortly followed by my foundation. Hmmmm. Have not investigated MAC skincare, but I like the sound of your routine.
I have to say that the MAC girls here are all very accommodating, cheerful, and unobtrusive. Shopping that counter has been enjoyable and fun.
I just wish they'd perfect a pink/bronze lipglass.
Suzanna: I used Face Time primer too! God...the results I used to get with that primer were spectacular. It slays me that I can not use it anymore. My skin has undergone some kind of change that has made me rethink everything. This is my current skin care cocktail...but I am open to change and tweeking. I am not even close to semi- holy grail status.
I think I need to do a major skincare project.
Hi Annie, Thanks for the review. I'm thinking of switching to a summer primer with an SPF. Do you have any SPF primer recommendations?
Have you tried MakeupForEver UV Prime SPF50?
Annie, are you using it just in the T-zone? So you're not using another primer on the rest of your face?
My skin is dry and somewhat Rosacean, but I find that my La Roche Posay Creme Fondante sunscreen is even better as a primer than MAC Prep and Prime(the original). It also gives my face a natural "glow" under my foundation without looking shiny.
The new Prep+Prime Skin Refined Zone sounds like a wonderful primer from MAC. This is quite a comprehensive review of the product with a very nice video.
Me again :}, Annie. I've never thought before of using a primer-like product before a treatment-type product like the Prescriptives. Hhhmmmmm. I'm curious about the Prescriptives Line Preventor -- do you have oily skin? I'm slightly dry and slightly sensitive but I remember reading a review (I think here) that said it was a great product. I'll check it out at MUA too. Thanks! Molly (GablesGirl)
This sounds a lot like the Clinique Pore Minimizer Instant Perfector or Clarins Instant Smooth- thoughts?
I could really use something like this, and the price seems very reasonable!
Sounds nice, I think - I'm one of the few who are still not convinced that facial primers make that much of a difference, but I can see the point of a primer targeted at the T-zone.
I love Ms. Taylor, but that commercial has always made me scream with laughter. Thanks for giving me a chance to see it again! What did they do... film her through gauze *and* vaseline on the lens? lol...
Aaah but the long missing, but not forgotten MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator is coming back in September! And....wait for it, wait for it...a thermal Volcanic Ash Mask too. *died and gone to Style Black heaven* Peace ;)
