Heavenly Creatures
Day 12: LUSH
Angels on Bare Skin and Dark Angels
Review by Jessica M
Years ago, I was a fanatical LUSH consumer; most of the products I
used on my face, hair, and body came from LUSH, even though I had to
order them from Canada and Australia at that time. I’ve drifted away
from LUSH in recent years, as they’ve discontinued most of my favorite
items and added too many candy-sweet new products, but there are still
a few things that keep me going back to their stores and their
website.
One of those LUSH “classics” is Angels on Bare Skin. It’s listed as a
facial cleanser, but it’s really a gentle facial scrub that’s best
used before cleansing. Angels on Bare Skin was inspired by a medieval
recipe for a facial treatment, and it has a short-and-sweet
ingredients list that includes ground almonds, glycerin, kaolin,
lavender flowers, and rose absolute. It looks like some rolled-up
oatmeal flecked with lavender buds, but it smells lovely and it leaves
skin feeling naturally soft and smooth. How do you use it? With dry
hands, break off just a little chickpea-sized piece of the product,
and press it into damp skin with your fingertips, working your way
around your face and then back again, for a full minute. Rinse it
off, and then follow it with your usual cleanser. I like Angels on
Bare Skin even more Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Cream, and it’s much more
affordable ($9.95 online for 3.5 oz.).
Dark Angels is a younger, goth-tomboy sister to Angels on Bare Skin.
Instead of finely ground almonds, its exfoliating ingredients are black sugar and powdered charcoal, with a dose of rhassoul mud for deep cleaning. It has a subtle sandalwood-and-rosewood scent, from natural oils. Dark Angels a bit too strong for me to use by itself in the winter, so I mix just a tiny bit of it with Angels on Bare Skin
when my face needs a little extra stimulation. In the summer, though, it works perfectly to make my face clearer. Treat this intense little
product with respect: try patting it onto the face, instead of rubbing, and then swirl it off lightly with warm water. ($10.95 online for 3.5 oz.)
LUSH has made some strange business decisions over the past few years,
but I can only hope (and pray?) that these Angels will stay in
production.

hm i must have gotten a bad angels on bare skin because mine smelled awful. I had to throw it away it smelled so bad
Angels on bare skin was a skin staple of mine for many years! Thank you for introducing me to the evil sister...LOL!
I *love* Angels on Bare Skin - and I've been interested in using Dark Angels as well. Although it was Lush's bath bombs that got me into the brand, it's their skincare that's kept me a loyal customer. I love their Fresh masks.
Just curious about which strange business decisions of Lush you're referring to? Their prices for their facial moisturizers have been rising astronomically, and I'm not a fan of their hair products.
I agree about Lush being very sweet - I never liked Rock Star or Think Pink. I do like their honey bee stuff though.
Thanks for posting!
Luv2smilexo, It does have a very "natural" scent of lavender and ground nuts, very different from most drugstore or dept store skincare products... but maybe a bad batch slips through occasionally. Cocomia, if you have oily skin and you want to deep clean in sweaty hot weather, Dark Angels might be calling your name! ;)
I love LUSH! Their stuff has helped my skin immensely and Angels was one of my favorites. With the Clarisonic brush I haven't indulged in any. I just use the Sea Vegetable bar for mornings.
I love that their products are now free of palm oil. They're the only place I'll buy shower gel & lotion from now.
J, I love their Fresh masks and some of their facial moisturizers, too! As for the rest, just what you said: the newer sticky-sweet scents, the rising prices, their insistence on using certain sulfates not only in their shampoos but also in their conditioners (?!)... also, the discontinuation of so many unique products, their expansion into shopping malls, the closing of sister-biz B Never; basically, losing much of what made them so different in the first place. Well, I'm just a consumer; what do I know?
Elisabeth, You can use Sea Veg on your face? Wow! Most of my favorite shower gels are gone now, and the rest are too drying for me (too many detergents and synthetic fragrances), but I think some of the body lotions are wonderful.
I'm a HUGE Lush fan,and I noticed you mentioned that your love for Lush had waned since they'd discontinued some of your favourites. Right now, they're doing a retro promotion. You might be able to find some of your old favourites.
