The Bees Knees

This is not my usual beauty post.
My friend Christine has started an Etsy jewelry shop.
Visit http://www.etsy.com/shop/MissCorvina to take a gander at bee necklaces and my personal favorite "The Camille".

Christine is the gal responsible for my blog template and my deep love for Duran Duran pins.
She is going through a difficult time.
I wanted to surprise her and try to drum up some business.

Is anyone else struggling with a bad week?
Last week was the devil.
This week is not much better.
Is something in retrograde?

Beauty blogging will be back Wednesday morning.

Glossy Lip Rouge from Anna Sui
A Review by Jessica M

If you’re an admirer of Anna Sui’s cosmetics, you may already know that the line’s Lip Rouges were redesigned and launched in Spring 2010. I’ve been meaning to write about them for a while, since I’ve been wearing them so often this summer.

The new Lip Rouge line-up is comprised of lipsticks in four different textures: G/Glossy (semi-sheer and shiny), V/Vivid (richly pigmented), D/Dazzle (sparkly!), and T/Tint (balm-like, with a hint of color). Overall, there are now thirty shades that range from pales to brights, and from neutrals to bolder tones. The lipsticks also have new packaging (which I happen to prefer to the previous look): Art Nouveau-inspired cases with embossed roses and heart-shaped cutouts.

Glossy, my favorite formula in the revamped Lip Rouge line, is packaged in a black-on-black tube. Shade #304 (“Coral Pink”) is a light peachy-canteloupe color, with fine silvery shimmer that gives a slightly frosty effect. It’s a nice option for a soft, natural look when you’re focusing more on your eye makeup. Shade #305 (“Passion Pink) appears almost fuchsia in the tube, but on the lips, it’s a sheer, buildable raspberry shade. I’ve been trying to wear more color this summer, and #305 is an easy, flattering way for me to intensify my look without overdoing it; this shade also coordinates perfectly with a dress I recently bought at the Anna Sui shop!

All the G/Glossy Lip Rouges have an emollient feel, since their formula combines state-of-the-art synthetic ingredients with a few natural oils and waxes. And, last but not least, they are delicately scented with a tea rose fragrance.

Have you tried the reformulated Lip Rouge line yet? Do you have any other favorites from this brand? Feel free to share in the comments!

Anna Sui G/Glossy Lip Rouges retail for $25 each. Anna Sui’s New York City boutique is located at 113 Greene Street; the phone number is 212-941-8406. Visit http://www.annasui.com/ for more information about the full cosmetics line.

Disclaimer: Lip Rouge #304 was provided as a press sample by Anna Sui; I purchased Lip Rouge #305 at the Anna Sui boutique.

Dream a Little Dream

Maybelline's Dream Smooth Mousse Ultra Hydrating Cream Whipped Foundation Review by Cavewoman

Is there any one makeup item that causes more frustration than foundation? If you're a reader of Blogdorf, chances are you're a makeup lover who has quite possibly found this to be true for yourself. I know it has for me, almost all my life. Oh, there have been some wonderful foundations that I have found over the years, perfect formulas for my skin type at the time, perfect match in terms of color, some true Holy Grails. And then the rumors start to fly, and you hear the dreaded "d" word -- discontinued! Or the "r" word, reformulated. These words pierce the brain of any makeup lover who has found a perfect product, especially foundation, and send us into panic mode. What will we do? Hoard bottles and bottles and hope they don't spoil or change while being stored? And how even would we store them? Next to the Smuckers jars in the fridge? In a dark closet where we may even forget we stashed them? Or do we just run out and start the search all over again?

I've gone through all of this. Starting long ago with the wonderful Lancome Maqui-Libre, which I used for years, I know what it's like when you go to the counter to buy a beloved product and are told "It's discontinued, but here, try this one! It's new and fabulous!" Well, most of the time, it isn't. And it is not even close to being a decent substitute. If I could even remember the shade of Maqui-Libre that I used, I'd scour ebay for it.
Another amazing foundation that I loved for years was Rimmel Recover. Housed in a tacky cheap pink opaque bottle, I bought it on a whim from the local drugstore, just guessing at my shade from looking at the little "shade selector" color dot on the bottle. I'm pretty sure they were BOGOF that day (that means Buy One Get One Free) and I got two of them. Within days of trying out this foundation, and realizing how beautiful it looked on my skin, I went back to buy two more. It's long gone now, but I'm still hoarding my last bottle.

In between finding the perfect foundation I've had some decent hits and miserable misses. From the most high-end brands (La Prairie and La Mer) to the lowest price drugstore items (Wet N Wild) I've tried so many I can't even remember. Two years ago I had given up and decided to just go to Prescriptives, where a wonderful makeup artist concocted my perfect match and formula with what they called Custom Blend. She mixed and tested for over an hour, and when she was finished, I had a bottle of my best color match ever, and a formula that moisturized, gave a little glow, and was as good as I could ever hope for in every way. When Prescriptives announced that the brand was closing, I had another bottle made. It was nowhere close to the first. I don't know why, when my first makeup artist had meticulously written down the formula, to the last drop.

And so in the last year, I'd given up on even looking at new products that all the makep brands were offering. I'd resorted to using a tinted moisturizer (Dior Hydra Life, it's wonderful!) which I found last Fall at Sephora. It got me through the Winter. With that, and my precious Rimmel, and the last bit of the original Prescriptives Custom Blend, I was ok, until something runs out, anyway.

So last week, Mom and I were in the grocery store, and I was checking to see if there were any new fun nail polish colors in the cosmetic area, and I spotted a display for the brand new Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse Ultra-Hydrating Cream-Whipped Foundation. I liked all the words. And I especially liked the row of tiny tester jars, one for each shade. Mom went on to the next aisle, and I started to test, with memories of my discovery of Rimmel Recover and how taking a chance on that one had been such a great success. I narrowed my color choices to two, and selected the one I thought might be The One.

I came home with #180 Nude Beige. For the record, I'm kind of pale, with pinkish undertones despite my Italian-Sicilian heritage. I'm hard to match in foundation shades. The closest I can come in MAC is NW20 and then it's not really that perfect.
I opened the jar of Maybelline and grabbed my beautyblender sponge.

The jar has two compartments. Unscrew the lid, and the foundation sits in the jar base. Flip open the top of the lid, and you'll find a nicely shaped flat sponge. I love my beautyblender so I chose to use it instead of the enclosed sponge. I twisted the beautyblender onto the foundation (wow, creamy!) and tapped a bit onto my face. The first thing I noticed was what a perfect match the color was! I could barely see where I had applied it. The second thing I noticed was that my pores seemed to disappear! And I hadn't even applied a primer! The formula has a glow, not sparkly, not dewy, just a fresh natural appearance. My skin felt so comfortable, the formula is as light as air, and application was completely effortless. With just a few taps of the beautyblender, I had finished a perfect application.

A few hours later, I went back to the mirror to check out my new discovery. I was amazed. The formula appears on the skin to be almost identical to the Rimmel Recover, without the teeny sparkles. It felt so moisturizing that I did not feel any discomfort from not applying a separate moisturizer underneath. It appeared as if the foundation had just melted beautifully into my skin, no visible pores, no dry patches, no creasing, and still glowy and fresh-looking.
I tested the foundation again the following day, and it lasted all day with absolutely no uneven wear and no changing color.
And yesterday when I wore it, Ms. Blogdorf exclaimed over how lovely it looked on my skin. We got a good laugh over it because after all of the high-end fabulous makeup lines we've tried, all of the expensive foundations we've loved, here I was back in love with a $8.49 drugstore foundation!

There are two things I have discovered over the years of testing and loving and hating and tossing and trying. First of all, now that I have hit my post-menopausal years, I cannot wear oil-free foundations. They cake and dry out my skin and change color and look horrible on me. The lighter the formula, in terms of coverage, the better I like it on me. The new Maybelline appears to be a light-to-medium coverage and I am thinking it would be buildable in problem areas if that's an issue for you. Secondly, I try to avoid foundations with sunscreen, especially titanium dioxide. I have found that when TI is used as a sunscreen it literally sucks the life out of my skin, and the foundation dries out and sits on top of my skin looking like a mask, wearing unevenly, pulling moisture out of my face, and just generally looking terrible. So, for me, an oil-free formula does not work well, and I look always for foundations without sunscreen, or at least a chemical sunscreen and not a physical sunscreen. I cannot find any SPF listing on the new Maybelline, so perhaps it does not have a sunscreen rating. That is fine by me! The new Maybelline is perfect! It's everything I loved about my former favorites, and I feel no need to look any further. For now, anyway. And I even feel a little bit smug, and very clever, to have discovered a great product at an unbelievable price. I'm so happy I took a chance on this wonderful new product from the venerable Maybelline New York.

Disclosure: The reviewer purchased this item for holy grail purposes.

Deep Blue Something

Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths
A review by Jessica M

Remember Noxzema? Of course you do. Actually, it never went away, and now the classic facial cleansing cream has been repackaged in a snappy new (but still blue!) jar. A few brand-new Noxzema products have also been introduced.

I’m not generally a facial-wipe user; I prefer to remove my makeup with actual makeup remover, then use a facial soap or a sudsy facial wash for thorough cleansing. So, when a public relations company sent me a pack of Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths (full disclosure!), I tucked them into my tote bag and figured that I’d pass them along to a friend. They stayed there for a few days.

Then the temperature soared into the high 90s, and one steamy afternoon I found myself trying to catch my breath after some errands around town, realizing that I had ended up sticky and sweaty just in time for cocktails with friends. I ducked into a department store restroom to repair my hair and makeup, and then I remembered: the Noxzema cloths were still in my bag. I whisked out a couple of them and went “off label,” using them to wipe down my arms and my legs and the back of my neck.

These cleansing cloths have the classic Noxzema scent of menthol, camphor, and eucalyptus, so they smell invigorating (but also soothing, because it’s such a familiar smell). They also felt fantastic that day, giving my skin a cooling, tingling sensation; they removed sweat, subway grime, and my general feeling of heat-wave despair. I was revived and ready for my next stop. I may just end up carrying them around and pulling one out whenever I’m overheated and wish I had a “re-start” button. It’s not how they’re actually meant to be used; but they’re easy to take along, they work well, and the price is right. I don’t think Noxzema would mind.

Do you still use classic Noxzema, or have you tried any of the new Noxzema products? Feel free to comment!

Noxzema Clean Moisture Makeup Removal Cloths sell for $3.99 (for a pack of 25) at drugstores.

Some Kind Of Wonderful

Behold the lovely heaven of Zoya's Kelly.
The grey is cold, murky, twisted, loch ness-like and full of Sleepy Hollow evil. Chanel's Paradoxal is almost cheerful in comparison. Fall is going to be a Tim Burton fairyland.

Kelly is part of the Zoya Fall collection called Wonderful. Kelly retails solo for $7. The entire Wonderful sampler collection retails for $36. Visit http://www.zoya.com/content/38/category/Zoya.html?brndid=38 to order or for more details.

I can resist anything except temptation

Meet the newest love of my life, Paradoxal by Chanel.
It is all kinds of twisted and murky goodness.
The shade is a mouse-like plum with a slight nod to grey.

My bottle was not shimmery in the slightest. MissHavisham on Makeupalley's nail board had a bottle of Paradoxal that really delivered on the shimmer fire.

Behold the glimmery magic via this link to MUA: http://www.makeupalley.com/m_112011865
If that does not make you rush out to your nearest and dearest Chanel counter....you have a lemming heart of stone.

Tournament Of Roses

Bond 9's Harrods Rose
Review by Cavewoman

If you had asked me early in my perfume loving years if I were a rose-scent lover, I would have said no, and I would have said it emphatically! I have always been a big white floral lover, the bigger the better. My first impressions of rose scents were formed when my neighbor lady soaked herself in Ombre Rose and its scent-twin, Lutece. She was a lovely lady and a good neighbor, but when she wore these perfumes, I could barely be around her. Silly me, I thought all rose scents smelled like these two perfumes. I didn't like them at all, to put it mildly, and therefore declared to myself that I hated all rose fragrances.

A few years later, on a trip to New York City with my sister, we were in Bloomingdales for a Mary McFadden event (I have to say this because she was so cool!) and as we walked through the fragrance department, a very chic and sophisticated sales associate offered to spritz me with a new scent from Yves Saint Laurent, and the name of that scent was Paris. She handed me a silk rose petal that she had sprayed with the fragrance. I carried the petal around with me during our time in Bloomingdales, and before we left the store, I purchased a bottle. All thoughts of the offensive Ombre Rose were gone. This is what rose fragrances are supposed to smell like. I have used up six bottles of Paris, and several of the Springtime and special edition versions as well. A rose-scent-lover was born that day! And it was me!

Since that revelation-revolution of rose, I have sought out and loved many rose-based perfumes. I've shared samples and raves with a few other rose lovers, especially Jessica, who is the first person I think of when I try something new in the rose category. We both love Bond No. 9 West Side! Recently the Cleveland Gang assembled for some fragrance counter perusing and wrist-testing, and I discovered (and bought, in record time I might add) the beautiful Bond No. 9 Saks-En-Rose, and it brings a smile to my face when I remember one of the gang following me around the store remarking over and over again that this was indeed a perfect scent on me. I'm glad I caved on the large size bottle. I've been wearing it so often that I am worried about the level in the bottle!

And so, when I read on the Bond No. 9 website that Bond was launching another rose scent, I could not wait to try it! When my sample arrived, the box was opened and the juice was on my wrist within a New York minute. And I was instantly in love.

Harrod's Rose begins and ends with the rose. There is no crispy breezy top note of the stuff you always wish would dissipate quickly so you can get to the heart of the scent. This fragrance gets down to business immediately, sweet and delicious, womanly and big. The sweetness comes from the white narcissus enhanced with tuberose. White roses are the main focus of the scent, powerful and proud. This is the big white floral, rose-dominated, that I have come to love over the years. In the base, musk is listed as one of the notes although I don't detect it at all. Ambrette seed and cashmere woods are the other base notes. The wood notes are the perfect compliment to the florals. They appear quickly and hold up the rose as if presenting the prize bloom to the wearer.

The bottle design is an adaptation of the Harrod's Bond bottles, originally designed by my friend Shawn, this time in the softest pink with gold lettering. I love the shape of the Bond bottles, the way they feel in the hand, and did you know that the bottles are made in Italy? Just a little tidbit there for you!

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Bond No. 9. I have purchased many Bond fragrances over the years. I like to think I'm their biggest fan. I am beyond thrilled to give Harrod's Rose this rave review. Harrod's Rose is a drop-dead, devastatingly feminine scent, self-assured and voluptuous.

As I turn 60 today, I've been thinking of how I would mark a birthday that ends in a zero. Starting the day with a big cup of coffee, chatting online with friends, talking to Mom on the phone, watching some fun television shows, and ending the day with TurboKick class, that is just how I want to spend the day. I'll be wearing Harrod's Rose all the while. I'll always associate this fragrance with this milestone birthday. A big day deserves a big perfume!

Editor's Note: Happy Birthday to my dear friend and frequent contributor to Blogdorf, Patti aka Cavewoman. Have a wonderful Bday!

First Date

This post is for Self Styled Siren.
I still believe in love.
My dear friend and co-worker Thais went on a lunch date this afternoon. She was kind enough to test drive the new MAC nail lacquer So Rich So Pretty. It is a perky pop of violet plum. It took only two applications to achieve the color pictured. Thais described it as "passionate" and plum pudding-like".

The date was a huge success. Love is in the air at the office.

The Alice+Olivia polish will be available for purchase at your local MAC counter on July 8th 2010.
