Once in a blue moon
I had such mixed emotions concerning this dress. The craftsmanship was pretty breathtaking.
The whirlpools of fabric.
The bright oceanic blue shade that managed to glisten in the sunlight.
The hoop engineering.
You just can not deny the impact.
I am still looking at this with a side eye.

Is it the shoes that are bothering me?
I can not pinpoint it just yet.

"I saw it in Italian Vogue. I just asked Donatella [Versace] if I could wear it for an evening. It's extremely glamorous. It's probably going to be in a museum tomorrow."

Now to the makeup.............
Now to the makeup.............
The makeup artist was Rachel Goodwin.
The beauty inspiration:
For January's make up I was inspired by Irving Penn's iconic photos of his
wife/supermodel Lisa Fonssagrives, whose signature extended eyeliner
symbolizes the epitome of elegance. I used ultra feminine colours with
super sculptural liner for a cool update on that classic late 50's
silhouette.
Beauty Tip:
I used CHANEL Liquid Eyeliner in Noir along the lash line for an
exaggerated cat eye effect, adding extra lashes on just the very outer
edges for added length. I then applied two coats of inimitable CHANEL
Inimitable Intense Mascara in Noir on the top lashes and one coat of CHANEL
Inimitable Intense Mascara in Purple on the bottom lashes.

I want to do this trick!
The rest of the face I kept understated using minimal foundation, pale pink cream cheek
colour and CHANEL Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss in Confidence on her lips.
I finished the look by dusting her brow bone and lids with a loose iridescent pearl shadow with a hint of purple to play off the super reflective quality of her dress.

If you want to do the look-do it all the way-the shoes seem integral to this look. Also-where are January's knees?! The demure factor of the black pumps + hidden knees just doesn't jive with the spectacular dress . . . but love the makeup!
Personal opinion: It's the shoes *AND* the hair *AND* the girl! It's a FAIL for January because the shoes are too ladylike, and there was nothing interesting with the hair. Compared to the cage platforms and big hair in the original Versace peg, there's just not a lot of there there.
I could totally see Christina Aguilera showing up in this dress, though. Preferably with some major boots.
I think you're right, meimei. It seems like she left the hair & shoes understated to let the drama of the dress stand out, but the drama of the dress needs a little more drama from everything else to work properly.
For me, the shoes don't work. Plus, she just seems too "blah" to me personality-wise for a dress like this. Then again, I'm not necessarily her biggest fan.
I agree with the hair. I also think the shade of the dress is off - does it appear "brighter" on JJ versus the model?
Huge fail. The hair, makeup, dress and shoes don't work together at all. She really should have done something more with her hair -- a natural style like that isn't appropriate for an awards ceremony, IMO. Gorgeous makeup though.
Sometimes it does pay to have a stylist.
Hated it. She just don't have the chops to pull off that dress. Not many women do, off of the runway.
I also think the dress failed...when you viewed it straight on. It was made for dramatic side shots. LOL
Agreed with VictoriaJane - the lowered hemline on January ruins the proportion of the skirt (which was a key feature of the dress!). She comes across looking like a girl drenched in a puddle versus the intended effect of a mermaid surfacing through a cresting wave. Silver sandals would've been a better option, too.
I like January Jones, but I always have a hard time liking any of her "edgier" looks. To me she comes across as a demure woman with messy hair. I would have liked to see a more dramatic shoe and a more complex hairstyle; an up-do a la Daphne Guinness without the stripes.
I think the shoes and the hair are the problem. She looks like she's just trying the dress in a dressing room, and she isn't wearing the appropriate footwear and doesn't have her hair "done." I love the dress, actually.
The dress reminds me of blue coffee filters...but I digress. Miss Jones looks like a 6th grader parading around in her much cooler, hipper HS Senior sister's dress. No edge, no rock-n-roll.
I am still on the fence as well. I love the color and that she "went" for it but overall it just doesn't quite hit the mark. Her hair was beyond a mess, and the shoes were just basic. That dress is not basic.
But kudos for trying something really risky and she owned it even if it ended up not so great.
She's getting talked about far more than all those with safer dresses, so there you go. From a publicity standpoint she can't lose.
I really wasnt a fan of the dress on her either but I thought her makeup was really lovely. She always looks so fresh and pretty
The fabric and color of that dress are insanely beautiful. But the cut of the skirt ruins in for me. It reminds me of an 80's prom dress! I expect her to do the kick dance and be drinking a sneaky wine cooler.
That dress needs to be floorlength. That front hoop business is FUG.
Her hair and makeup were PERFECTION though.
I don't love that type of dress normally, but I think in general, she pulled it off well. The shoes irk me because I don't actually like the ones in the Versace image because of the too big platform, but I didn't like her choice either - a plain black platform seems like your original pair broke or something - very last minute replacement vibe. Could it be so hard to source a pair of shoes in the same colour? But I loved her simple makeup and hair. You can't do a dress like that with too-fussy hair and makeup, but you can't really go completely classic either.
I liked it a lot more than most critics/editors did. But I agree with others that she didn't take it far enough. The bodice was so structured that she needed extreme height with her hair or completely slicked back. The flyaway look was too deconstructed. The shoes also should have been more avant guard. The color is gorgeous for her though.
Can I just say that I miss doing these fashion posts?
I am so happy that we were all on the same page about the shoes and hair.

and Stef....
we would have been friends in high school.
I agree that she doesn't know how to bring out hte dress. Her hair is bland as is her choice of footwear. Besides this she is too short for the dress. The hemline wasn't lengthened because you can see it has the same amount of 'scales' as the one the model is wearing. She fits the dress width wise but they should have shortened it for her because it makes her legs look shorter when you cant see her knees.
