40 Days and 40 Nights of Beauty Cult Classics
Day 17, Pout's Apricot Totty by Patti aka Cavewoman

Just looking at this blush, sitting here open next to me on the desk, makes me happy. It's been three years since the buzz began on Makeupalley about Pout Apricot Totty pressed powder blush, and at the time, I was heavily into MAC and wasn't paying much attention to other lines. But I kept seeing the raves about this blush, kept seeing the "temporarily out of stock" listing on the Sephora website, and kept loving the members' photos of this pretty color when I would see them on the Alley. Everyone seemed to have a different way of describing the color, and there were variations in the photos, of course, but the raves kept me interested. Cult status was attained. People were buying Tottys for each other and swapping to obtain them. The moment they popped back in stock on the Sephora site, I ordered my Totty.

The Pout company has now gone out of business, which is very sad. Adorable, quality packaging, as pretty and girly as they come, house really fine products that I've come to appreciate. I'm sad that there won't be any more Pout, but I'm glad I have my Totty.

Open the soft turquoise compact with the hot pink mesh and flower print on the lid, and the first impression is "Wow! I could never pull off this cheek color!" It's a slightly shimmery combination of pink, peach, orange, coral, and apricot, and it's bright. Really bright. I wondered how in the world I would ever be able to apply this with a light hand. And for a year, I did not even try. I just kept the blush in a basket on my vanity table, opening it every so often and then closing it and choosing something more subtle for my cheek color. Then I started reading about a new makeup brush from MAC, the now legendary #187, a synthetic brush that's commonly referred to as The Skunk Brush. The promise was that any highly pigmented product could be tamed by using this brush, which has some bristles that extend further out from the main brush bristles, a very unusual design. The main bristles are black, and the extended ones are white, hence the nickname. I bought the Skunk, and took out the Totty. Perfection! Just the most perfect amount of blush is picked up by those extended bristles, and a soft application of Totty was not only possible, but easy and effortless!

I've used Apricot Totty blush with both warm and cool lip and eye colors. It's a chameleon. It is eager to please, and it becomes what you want it to become. It coordinates with just about every other color cosmetic product I have. It takes on the warm or cool effect, depending on what other color products I am using. I've never seen another color quite like Totty. I think maybe the elusive Bobbi Brown Coral might be close, and MAC's Delirious too, although that one is a bit more reddish than Totty. The color is exuberant and joyful and gives a healthy glow to the cheeks. It may even bring a smile to the lips! Cult-Status-Worthy, yes!

40 Days and 40 Nights of Beauty Cult Classics
Day 16, Stila's Diamond Lil Eye Shadow

This is an eyeshadow that I had to hunt down. For a solid year it eluded me until one day by sheer luck or fluke it appeared in a drawer at my local Nordstorm. I did a little jig and created a palette around it.

Diamond Lil is a mushroom taupe that has the added bonus of green and gold shimmer. How does it differ from Lancome Erika F?
Erika F has more shimmer and less of a gold base. Diamond Lil has more slate.
Stila has an incredible velvety smooth texture that feels like you are applying cashmere to your eyelids.

Disclosure: I purchased this shadow along with this palette at my local Nordstorm store.

40 days and 40 Nights of Beauty Cult Classics
Day 15, Rimmel's Snog

Rimmel's Vinyl Gloss in Snog is frequently described as a "your lips but better" shade. This will give your lips the appearance of being flushed or just bitten. It has "better than average" shine and applies smooth and drama free. There is no gloppy mess or tacky smackers. For a gloss it has decent staying power. The taste and smell is not remarkable...which is a good thing.

The reason why I have chosen it for the Beauty Cult Classics series is that it qualifies 100 percent. It has everything going for it. The quality is high end with a drugstore price. It is universally flattering on many skin tones. It has a slightly naughty name.
What is not to love?

Let me know your thoughts in the comments. If you have not tried this gloss...I encourage you to do so.

You will not be sorry.

Disclosure: I purchased this lippie from my local drugstore.

First impressions of the Christian Dior show....Lady Bunny from Wigstock.

Cupcake Cult Eye Primer

I generally do not wander into my local Hot Topic store. I am not their targeted demographic. I visit when I need an Emily the Strange fix or want to feel every year of my age.
Last week I went in for blogger research.
I had read on MUA that there is a Hot Topic cosmetic line that boasts a fabulous eye primer and impressive pigments.
I believed the raves warranted a visit.

First off, my store did not have a vast selection. According to the sales associate, the makeup line is getting revamped and repackaged. If you visit the store's website you will also see that the pickings are fairly slim.
The price was inexpensive and the packaging was adorable. The logo is a cupcake with a cherry in the form of skull.
This is where the rave screeches to a halt.

The shade is a shimmery pinkish beige wash. It is not a nude finish at all. The formula darkened slightly on my lid after application. This was alarming but I was committed to giving this a full test run. I did a basic wash of MAC Your Ladyship pigment with Modest Tone shadow.
The colors applied true and non-cakey. I thought this looked like a welcoming sign.
I finished with a smoky based eye with Lancome's Erika F. It was not a complicated look.

After a few short hours, my eyes did not look good. The primer had grown darker on my eyes and this was peeking out from my rapidly disappearing MAC wash. Erika F had decided to abandon ship after lunch. I was startled to see that she left without a trace.
Soon it was just pure chaos.
I had nothing left on my eye except some chunks of shimmer.
Never in all my years of wearing shadow has this ever happened.

Cupcake Cult Eye Primer is priced at $3.99 and is not worth a dime.
Let me know what your thoughts are in the comments.

40 days and 40 Nights of Beauty Cult Classics
Day 14, Estee Lauder's Tom Ford Azuree Soliel Oil

This is a cult classic fragrance that quickly sold out and was revived the following year at Estee Lauder. Not only did the company realize they had a gem on their hands but they created a fragrance version of the oil. I managed to hoard bottles of both.

The price point was so reasonable on the oil that it truly cemented my love for the company. They could have charged more. The quality of the oil was first rate. It was whisper light and was downright luxurious. It left a sexy sheen to the skin instead of an oil slick.

The scent was addictive. It has sex appeal with notes of Tiare and a spice driven drydown. It smells like expensive suntan lotion that has been warmed by the sun. I found myself layering it with everything from Bond's Chinatown(a mixing recipe created by Tbone) to Bond's Fire Island. I could not stop reaching for it all summer.
It became a second skin.

Zoya is releasing two collections in May called Chit Chat and Gossip. Chit chat is inspired by beauty bloggers while gossip's inspiration is the MTV television show, The Hills.

Gaia from The Non Blonde will be a shimmery white. I know that I will use her shade for my springtime french manicures.
Lianne from Makeup Girl ,Erika from Makeup Bag, Elke from The BeautyBlog Network and Michelle from the nail polish bible All Lacquered Up will all have a polish named in their honor.

I also have been chosen to be a part of this group. When I first found out, I could not wait to tell my nail tech. She has been a longtime supportive of Zoya.
My shade will be a red orange with gold shimmer.

The Gossip collection will fly off the shelves. The colors are strong, bright and season appropriate. I will be caving on Elodie just because she is such a badass. I was delighted when she put the screws to Heidi.

Visit All Lacquered Up for a sneak of the shades:

NICOLE KIDMAN
Makeup Artist Angela Levin

Beauty Inspiration:
"My inspiration was Nicole! She already had an amazing, natural radiance, which made her an easy canvas to work with."

Look: The focus of Nicole’s sultry look was her eyes. Angela used deep, rich shades to give Nicole a dramatic, smoky eye. To achieve this look she brushed SOFT TOUCH EYESHADOW in SILVERY and EBONY on the lids. She then lined the eyes with INTENSE EYE PENCIL in GRAPHITE and NOIR to make them stand out. As always, Angela used her favorite CHANEL product, INIMITABLE MASCARA in NOIR-BLACK. She finished the look with a pale, natural pink lip; ROUGE ALLURE in DARLING.

Bling:Rough and Polished Diamond Sautoir Necklace designed by L’Wren Scott, containing a total of 7645 Diamonds, and totaling nearly 1400 Carats.

Gown: Balenciaga
Blogdorf Note: I was not crazy for this dress. I realize that she needed to have a blank canvas to set off the necklace...but the hem was too short in my humble opinion. Situations with fit always irk me.

Tidbit: She was the last to arrive at the Oscars.

"Dear Miss Brodie, I hope it will be convenient for you to see me in my office this afternoon at 4:15. Emily Mackay." Four fifteen. Not four, not four thirty, but four fifteen. Hm. She thinks to intimidate me by the use of quarter hours?
(From the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie)

One of the early themes coming out of the Milan shows is the librarian. The interpretations ranged from repressed to tarted up bookworms. I wondered if it was a political statement or if they just were rebelling against their heritage of sex. But the moment I spotted the stills from the Dolce&Gabbana runway, I knew this was a trend that was going to stick. The DG team managed to make some of the thinnest models in the business look husky. I spotted big wale corduroy, nubby fur worthy only of a teddy bear, thick knee highs, and lace.

The lace was lovely to see. Only Prada can twist prim and proper lace into something slightly naughty. The glimpses of skin through the swirls and flowers was alluring. This is where I started thinking of the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

I loved this description of the character Jean Brodie from wikipedia:
She is beautiful yet fierce, keen yet ignorant, intellectual yet deranged, passionate yet lacking a lover.

This is a perfect description for most of the Milan collections with the glowing exception of Versace. Sometimes Versace can be deranged but she never lacks a lover or two.

What do you think of the shows so far? What are your favorites?

Marion Cotillard

Beauty Inspiration: “My inspiration was Marion's pearly white dress with hints of gold and silver. The intricate petal-like design reminded me of a flower. And of course, I was inspired by La Vie en Rose!" ( Makeup Artist, Angela Levin)

Beauty Tip: To give Marion a refined, ethereal look, Angela used the copper and pink-gold shadows from the MULTI-USE MAKEUP PALETTE in LUMIERE NATURELLE on her lids. She applied SHEER BRILLIANCE in SUNKISSED to Marion’s skin, giving her complexion a sheer sun-kissed glow. On her cheeks, Angela brushed on POWDER BLUSH in NARCISSE, a pale delicate pink. She finished the look with AQUALUMIERE SHEER COLOUR LIPSHINE in SOMOA, a copper-rose shade.

PENELOPE CRUZ Makeup Artist Rachel Goodwin:

Beauty Inspiration: "I was inspired by her gorgeous dress, which had a historical feel to it. I wanted to add a dramatic flair to her look with her makeup, which I did with a navy cat eye."

Beauty Tip: Rachel gave Penelope a stunning, dramatic look on the red carpet. She created a navy cat eye by lining the eyes with PRECISION EYE DEFINER in BLUE JEAN, then smudged the navy shadow from QUADRA EYESHADOW in BLEU CELESTE on top of the liner, giving her a deep blue almond shaped eye. She used TEINT INNOCENCE foundation in SOFT HONEY on her skin, and gave her complexion a matte, velvet finish with POUDRE CRISTALLINE ULTRA-FINE TRANSLUCENT POWDER. Rachel applied a new ROUGE ALLURE shade, NAÏVE, to Penelope's lips for a pinkish nude lip.

40 days and 40 Nights of Beauty Cult Classics
Day 13 , Monyette Paris

I was introduced to Monyette Paris by Impishnature on MUA. "Imp" was one of my favorite muaers. She had magnificent taste in all things and was just so damn cool.
So when she started raving over a gardenia scent, I knew it was extraordinary and worth caving on. It had to be an exquisite white floral to capture the heart of my incense sister.

Monyette Paris is a perfume oil inspired by the tropical air in Polynesia and the South Pacific. The notes are Tahitian gardenia, French muguet du bois, vanilla orchid, nag champa and incense. I have never visited Belize but this is what I always imagined the air to smell like. Like a small piece of heaven!

Luckyscent and La Creme Beauty both offer the roller bottle. I managed to score a handpainted bottle ions ago on Luckyscent. I do not remember the price or any details other than the bottle quickly sold out. It came in a little fabric box and has a cork stopper. I keep it in a drawer and never let it see the light of day.

It is available at La Creme Beauty

KATHERINE HEIGL
Makeup Artist Monika Blunder

Beauty Inspiration: “My inspiration was ‘roman retro’ with minimalist glamour. The makeup had a warm glow and a sun-kissed look. She looked like she just got back from vacation in St. Tropez!”

Beauty Tip: Katherine was gorgeous and luminous on the red carpet. Monika gave her a bold, bright, poppy hued mouth with AQUALUMIERE GLOSS in PARTY RED, a new gloss formula from CHANEL launching in May, flown in from Paris for the Oscar red carpet. She applied SHEER BRILLIANCE in SUNKISSED to give Katherine's complexion a subtle, bronze glow. On her cheeks, Monika used POWDER BLUSH in HORIZON, a warm coral shade. She created a defined eye with INTENSE EYE PENCIL in AMBRE, and applied beige and brown shadows from QUADRA EYE SHADOW in DUNES to the lids. Finally, Monika added a touch of glamour to the eyes with INIMITABLE MASCARA in NOIR-BLACK.

40 Days and 40 Nights of Beauty Cult Classics
Day 12, Stila's Kitten Eye Shadow

Stila's Kitten eye shadow has a high shimmer factor with a smooth creamy texture. The pigment and lasting power rate very well in comparison to other brands. There are many workhorse shades in the Stila catalog including kitten.

Kitten is a peachy champagne shade with a whole lot of frost action. The frost aspect has scared away many a makeup junkie. A light hand and a love of shimmer is required.

This is not my favorite Stila shade. That review will show up later in this series. It will not surprise you knowing my love for all things taupish mushroom.
Let me know what your thoughts are on this Stila shade and any others.

BECCA Paradise Lost Spring 2008 Collection
by storybookheroine

Sensual femininity is accentuated this season with BECCA’s Paradise Lost Collection, an alluring selection of coquettish shades fit for enchantment. Inspired by a garden of earthly delights, lips and cheeks are in full bloom with windswept pink, eyes are gilded in bronze, and skin is effortlessly illuminated with a dusting of golden beige shimmer.

This is going to be a beautiful collection! The cheeks and lips are a soft pinky-coral that is surprisingly wearable and feminine. The eyes are a simple wash of shimmering bronze. New items for Paradise Lost are a Lip and Cheek Creme in Tuberose, a Soft Touch Blush in Coquette, an Eye Tint in Gilt and a Nude Lip Liner Duo in Fondant. Daiquiri Glossy Lip Tint and Ultimate Mascara in Black (new from Holiday 2007) are repromoted items.

As of now I have Tuberose Lip and Cheek and Daiquiri Glossy Lip Tint so I tried to fake the look with my extensive BECCA collection and I was surprised at the fresh soft coral pop of the cheeks and lips and how comfortable and flattering the look is (one of these days it will stick in my head that coral shades are one of my favorites). I faked Coquette with Wisp Soft Touch Blush but Wisp is darker than Coquette which is much closer in shade to the super popular Hyawatha Pressed Shimmer Powder according to BECCA. I cannot wait to get my hands on it! Fondant is a pink matte nude with a skin tone beige highlighter (I asked and it is slightly different than the highlighting end of Nougat Lip Liner). Gilt Eye Tint is a shimmering bronze which thrills me to no end. Some of you may know I am a huge fan of BECCA Eye Tint. It makes a fabulous, crease-proof, waterproof, base to any shadow as well as looking good on its own and perfect for setting BECCA Shimmer Powders, Jewel Dusts and Soft Touch blushes (I love to set Wisp into Baroque, the original Eye Tint shade).

I wish I had all the products to give you a full review but these are some of BECCA's most tried and true items and knowing their good taste in colors I can only assume I will be very happy when my box of BECCA Spring arrives on my doorstep!

Please click on the pictures of the collection and the two models for larger images.
