Day 17: CoverGirl Lipstains
by Ceil
The subject of lipstains seems to bring out some vehement reactions among cosmetics lovers. Love or hate? I have to say that I am usually in the love camp for these products. I will admit major frustration however, with the applicators that lipstains seem to get packaged with. So when CoverGirl came out with their new Outlast lipstains I had to try them…if nothing else, just to see if they came up with a better brush or way of applying the stain.
I have to say, I am totally enamored with these lightweight stains. They not only come in a beautiful range of colors, but also have applicators that are hassle-free and do not deposit huge amounts of stain all in one place. They come packaged in a pen-like brush applicator that deposits the stain naturally and evenly on your lips. The tip has a “hard” texture and can be used as a liner for defining the narrow part of lips as well. It’s like using a felt tipped pen and applying the color exactly where you want it.
And the colors!!! Such beautiful shades! Not just the typical “beet-juice” red. There are 10 colors to choose from ranging from nudes to corals, berries, blush & plum colors. I personally found that the ones I chose all seemed to have a slightly “reddish” tone within their color range….but the red was the “natural” color of the lip, not a fake red. As a result, even the shades I was afraid of …“sassy mauve” & “bit of blossom” …looked very natural, even though they had more “color” than I, as a nude lippie lover, usually wear.
The stain is water-based, non–drying and doesn’t seem to transfer or bleed outside the lipline. And, they don’t have that annoying drippy quality that so many stains have either. You can also layer this stain to increase the intensity of color (let it dry between layers). Outlast lipstains give a soft matte finish…which can be kept nicely with a matte lipbalm , or they are gorgeous with a clear gloss, or clear Mac dazzle glass on top. This is a very fun product that I think will be perfect for a natural summery look. But with colored glosses on top they can also provide a very striking evening-type look as well.

whether i like it or not, we no longer have CoverGirl (if not mistaken). I guess the business was so bad that it killed itself.
I was so inspired by this post I bought one of these today.
WOW! I love the texture, the applicator..I bought Bit of Blossom and it's a tad darker than I thought it'd be but it looks great. Now I'm totally up for more! I also love that it doesn't have a crazy flavor/smell like a lot of stains. (You hear me Revlon's Just Bitten?? Cause I'm talking to you!)
I may just be in love. <3
I'm intrigued. Does the color last a long time?
Oh, thanks for the review. I've thought about trying this, but didn't want to risk disappointment or waste money.
I like them. But I have to say I like Benetint by Benefitso much better. It seems to actually stay on my lips. You just have to get over the floral smell that lasts all of 6 seconds (or they make tint balm in a little pot).
I put mine on yesterday evening around 6pm - ate dinner and when I went to bed last night it was still going strong. Even after washing my face and sleeping there's still a hint left this morning.
Well....I think...my lips just look a bit naturally darker. It's subtle.
I caved on a couple of these over the weekend (but did NOT clothes shop). They were a little darker than I would like, but I think I may have used them a little heavy handedly.
Mark has had this same product out for years...works great and can often be found on sale!
I want to try these so much! I'm cutting back on spending for another month, but I am picking up one of these the minute I get out. I love the idea of stains, but I have always found that getting even color with some of the horrid applicators out there is just impossible (oh yes Revlon stain with the horrid rollerball, I'm talking about you). These are on my list "to try" for spring and summer.

I have no natural pigment to my lips so I am the queen of the lipstains! I have to say I am baffled by the positive reviews for this stain-pen. The packaging, colors and taste are all great but...this stuff does not stay on at all. Even the darkest of the stains disappears as fast as a lipgloss. There are much better products out there - albeit much pricer.
I have never tried one of these lipstain type products before. Now I am intrigued! Thanks, Ceil, it was a great review!!
I tried one of these and was also very impressed, I've tried lots of stains over the years and the applicator has always been problematic. This one is so easy I can apply at a red light! It will last a long time as long as your lips are dry when you put it on-- if you've been wearing chapstick or gloss it won't absorb right.
