Day 15: Whiplash Girlchild in the Dark
Black Lippies on Friday the 13th
My heart is a black stone
A streaking mirror of unseen creatures
He had a milkness from the universe
18 thousand feet a black stone heart
My heart is a black stone
A moon glab night
Come with this darkness
I come with this darkness
And go away white
Go away white
(Lyrics from Bahaus Black Stone Heart)
Chanel released a small lippie collection called Les Noir de Chanel. Rumors swirled that the lipstick Obscure was a relaunched Vamp. It is not. It is a 1920's inspired chocolate wine shade. It is stunning and layers well with Astral glossimer. I never would have put these two lippies together. The key to making these lipsticks wearable in real life is layering with the glossimers. This is a very limited edition collection. My local Saks counter only received 8 tubes of each shade. They do not have the testers out and about. You have to ask to see them.
Maniac is a plum black. The Chanel SA layered this lippie with a bronze glossimer. It was traffic stopping.
Hysteria is a blue violet black. It is blue toned and the most difficult to wear. I have successful worn this blotted to a violet stain and layered with Astral glossimer.
Disclaimer: I photographed these lippies at my local Saks sore.
I purchased Hysteria.

I love your posts! So nice how you incorporated the poetry to evoke the feeling of the products. These lipsticks are spectacular. I've seen and tried them and the are true collectibles.
I had no idea this exsisted at all - are they available now?
Mighty J: I found them at Saks ony so far. They did not get many.
Wow, those really are dark. I love Chanel lippies, but I don't think I could wear these.
I really want to try these but I have such pale skin and a baby doll face that I don't know if they would really ever work on me.
What do you think?
Pretty, but I cannot pull off that look...
Hi!
I got 2 of these lipsticks (Hysteria and Obscure). I was sent Obscure by mistake though - I was supposed to have gotten Maniac (I ordered through the Chanel web site).
Anyhow, I was hoping for fabulous things because I love this concept but I was *so* disappointed. Not only with Chanel's customer service but with the quality of the lipsticks. I love the color of Hysteria but it bleeds like CRAZY and is terrible quality. I was hoping for a very thick, creamy lipstick but instead it is very thin, hard to build and just plainly not the consistency I wanted. I just have never seen a lipstick feather so much (and no, I never use lip liner).
So on this note are there any recommendations for a MATTE black lipstick? I have tried the black Wet 'N Wild sold during Halloween and Manic Panic's "Raven" (which is advertised as matte but is NOT).
Thanks for any recs! I love your blog! :)
Cheers

I bought Lipstick Queen's "Black Tie Optional", which was disappointing because while it is very sheer, it is also very matte. No shine in sight. It's fun to play with in terms of layering under my current lippies, but not what I was hoping for. I would love to find a sheer *glossy* black!
I'm about to buy Obscure on chanel.com, because I just can't resist it and no one will have it locally for me (educated guess, my being located in Delaware).
I can't believe you don't have swatches of everything! Love love love!
How do you get pictures?? I'm insanely jealous lol. Anytime my camera is near my hand the SA's freak out! lol I've asked them and they say no..I've sneaked and got caught lol..what's your secret
I love this 40 day series on lippies..I'm obsessed with lippies and so this is a dream come true!
great job!
I got all 3 also plus Rouge Noir/Vamp (would you believe it that I'ver never owned it??). I'm not brave enough to wear it as yet. I've worn Vamp underneath another red (I can't remember which) and that worked a treat! I need to play around with the other 3 to make it work for me.
I was tempted by the MAC Cult of Cherry dark lippies, but didn't cave because I am afraid my beginning to age skin will not be flattered by those dark colors. HOWEVER, being a Chanel 'ho, after reading this post I immediately called the nearest Saks & will be picking a couple up tomorrow. They will take their place in the drawer where I hoard my MAC bunny pink lippie, Pout apricot toddy, last new tube of MAC carnal, & the Jill Stuart pieces I picked up in Tokyo.
Dark lipstick just reminds me of the girl who used to sit in front of me in economics class in high school. She was a "goth" and I totally feel all "The Cure" when I see people sporting this trend. For some reason, dark lipstick just gives me the feeling of sadness. I much prefer happier, lighter colors. But there are definitely some girls who can rock this trend and look awesome.
Bostonia: I think it could look amazing! Do not order untested though. Try them at your local saks store. The SA's are willing to help. Mine convinced me to try it!!! I never would have caved on it if I did not test it first.
Medusa: Try a lippie primer.
These lipsticks required preparation before applying. They are not easy like a standard lippie. But the payoff is pretty great!
I have no recs for a matte black lipstick. Have you tried Shu or MUFE? They might work better. I thought Shu's looked pretty cool but have not experimented yet.
Psycho: I did a swatch but I did not like the quality of it. Lets hope Karlasugar can get her hands on these. ***crosses fingers***
Fashion D: I just asked. My local counters know me pretty well. The only times I was yelled at was TJ Maxx and the Bloomingdales window in NYC.
Food: OMG Jill Stuart! Swoon!!!!
Tell me more. I am obsessed with that line. There are rumors that one of her stores will have the line this summer. I so hope that it is true.
All the Jill Stuart products I bought were very high quality. The lipstick (a shimmery peach) has that perfect balance of pigment and moisture, my lips aren't ever too dry. But the shadow quads are what really wowed. After I returned to that states I ordered some more from ichibankao despite the sticker shock.
I bought Givenchy's Black Plum, and I'd had Clarins #365 for a while before the trend even started. I adore dark lipsticks; they scream of glamorous, dangerous women, jazz, and silent films.
I wanted to add...Lancome Color Fever Gloss in Intense is an amazing topper for darker colours.
Do you know the name of the bronze gloss the Saks SA used with Maniac? Please try to find out.
I bought Obsure and Astral! Love them!
I bought two of the lippies and two of the nailpolishes. I wish I'd bought them all. I have found using Guerlain Kiss Liplift prior to applying these lipsticks makes a world of difference. I love them, have always loved the dark ones and luckily it is my husband's favorite lip look. I like to mix it up with other colors but when I ask him about those he says, "Not really, you know what color I like." He's pretty consistant about it. I like it when we shop together.
Illamasqua makes a perfect black matte, you can get it at Sephora.
