Day 12: Purple Prose
Lay it out in Lavender Lippies
This is the first post in a series of exploring lipstick colors. Purple is defined as shades occurring between blue and red. Popular purple shades are violet, lilac, orchid, heliotrope, pansy, lavender, wisteria, eggplant, plum, grape, amethyst and mauve. Purple is known for symbolizing royalty, being the favorite color of the musician Prince and being the shade of Mace Windu's lightsaver (That reference is for blogger, Pink Sith!). Purple lipsticks and lip glosses is a required taste. These violet fans are not as vocal as taupe eye shadow lovers. Color choices are hard to come by and new releases are pounced on.
I am currently smitten with MAC's Lavender Whip. This was a lipstick introduced in the cremesheen collection. It was a fairly unique shade by MAC standards and quickly sold out. The shade is a cool toned lavender. At first glance you assume the lippie would be difficult to wear. The results are the opposite. It flatters many and is quite a gem. MAC released a lighter, less intense version in the Hello Kitty collection, called Fashion Mews.
During a trip to Paris, I discovered a want and need for a silver plum lippie. I spotted this odd shade on every news anchor and television host. They paired it with a smoky eye. The news had never been delivered so glamorously. By the end of the trip a lemming and quest was born. This quest has only been fulfilled by Chanel, MAC and NYX.
Chanel produced a glossimer called Delight. This gloss is a muted silvery lilac. It has great fire by shimmer standards and is lovely. NYX is a murky lavender with a slight pearl. Layered together they create magic. MAC Atmospheric lipglass is a cool amethyst shade with red shimmer. This looks like Smuckers jelly in the tube but on the lips it translates into a plummy taupe. Victoria Secret makes a great sheer plum lip gloss called grapesicle. It contains blue shimmer and smells like trident.
I have a few plums that are on the red side of the spectrum. They are generally warmer and mix well with pinks. MAC's Chromeglass in Prize Shine is a metallic intense plum. This went a little too bronze on me and I rarely reach for it. Chanel's Sugar Plum glossimer is a wearable pale red violet. This layers well with MAC's Mauvellous. MAC's Up the Amp is a bright violet pink. Pomposity is often described as a purple. I think this leans more on the red side. It is more of a blue toned raspberry.
My favorite violet shades are MAC's Stiletto and Violetta. I discovered MAC's Stiletto at my local CCO store by chance. It had long been discontinued and was already spoken of in hushed revered tones. It is worth all the hype. It is a pansy violet shade. Pomposity is often described as a Stiletto clone. This is not true. Pomposity is much more pink and vibrant. Stiletto is more violet with only a slight lean on the magenta side.

Violetta is also by MAC. This is a color currently available at Pro stores and is an amplified formula. This shade is the true kissing cousin to Stiletto. They share similar characteristics but Violetta has more depth with more blue violet pigment. Violetta's intensity can be built with each application. This lippie can get quite purple with each layer. It is quite stunning.
There are many purple hued lipsticks I have not mentioned. Two standouts are MAC's Cyber and Chanel's Hysteria. These are eggplant black shades. They have a 1920's vampy kind of feel. Very bold and smoldering. I purchased Hysteria during a shopping trip at Saks. The SA layered it with Astral lipgloss.
Thats all it took.
I was in love.
Again.

Purple lippies and Star Wars references, this geeky girl's dream!
Avon's Beyond Color Plumping Lip Color in Mad for Mauve is a very cool-toned lavender.
I have fond memories of a L'oreal dark purple iridescent lippie I wore back in high school (hey it was the 80's!). It looked really scary in the tube but was beautiful on the lips. It had a matching nail polish. Of course it's discontinued and I can't even remember the name of it now.
Oh, I can't wear lilac/lavander/purple. It just doesn't work with my skin color and personally, I dislike lilac that much. None of the shades you posted would work for me, though Lavander Whip is really that gorgeous.
I have however a lovely Lâncome shade that is a mix of eggplant/very dark purple, one of the most gorgeous colors ever. I use it very seldom because they give me a bit of a goth vibe and that requires that the rest of my makpe up and wordrobe are much more elaborated, IMO.
Bobbi Brown Black Pearl is a favorite, MAC Spite is a plummy color that looks very lavender-ish on, and, although not a color, Lancome's black Piha lipgloss worn sheerly makes dark lips look muted lavender with sparkle. E.L.F. has a $1. gloss called Natural Blush that is a pale lavender to me, and my everyday lipgloss is MAC Trance Plant--although described as brown, it is very moist sheer purple on. Can you tell I'm a daily purple/lavender wearer!?
DGV: I think I wore that one too.
I also wore Gossip by Prescriptives. That was a dark color popular during the grunge era.
Raquel: That lancome sounds pretty. Lilacs are hard to pull off but I felt Lavender Whip was an exception that rule. It looked fab on all my friends, warm and cool toned.
terriB: Thank You! I wanted someone to come in and post more colors. I forgot Black Pearl gloss!!!!
mac perky lipglass is a good light purple/lilac-y color. Of course it was a LE a few years ago....
There used to be a Lancome Rouge Idole in a shimmery lilac with just enough pink to be gorgeous with my complexion. Usually, lilac hues make all my red edges pop unflatteringly. I bought Lavendar Whip, nevertheless, but am a little afraid to break into it. :-(
Most of the purple lippies at my vanity are from MAC. Orchidazzle (shimmery lilac), Retrofluid (darker plum but with sheer application), Bing (from Cult of Cherry, plummy eggplant), oh and Pompadorable (Rococco collection, muted lavender). I would never have thought that purples could work on with my skintone and coloring (fair, peachy, blonde, blue eyes) but I love the right shade! Sometimes I go for a contrast on the eye or cheek with a light touch of yellow/gold or orange/tawny and it really works for my blue eyes. I can't wait to see what color is up next, Annie! Molly
Thank you so much! I love purple lipsticks and glosses. I ordered Lavender Whip right away. I love it. I will enjoy this series. I really love lipstick. I have over 60 and countless glosses. There's just something about a new tube of lipstick.
My fave purple hued lippies are:
YSL's Rouge Pur Transparent in #25 Black Orchid
NARS Damaged
I love a lavender gloss...I think it is perfect for spring!

Molly: We are going to attempt several shades. Let me tell you that purple post was time consuming. I shudder to think how long the red post will take.
Annie: Too funny! I pulled out one of my trays of reds last night and thought "How are Annie and The Blogdorf Gals going to cover a more mainstream color?! Those gals are my heros!" Then again, I never met a red I didn't like so I probably have a skewed view of the world ;] -- you'd have to hold me to naming only my HG Red or Most Wearable (even those I'd have to think on!). GOOD LUCK!! I'm rooting you on from across the miles!! Molly
The only purple lippie I have tried is Lavendar Whip and I love it. I definitely am a convert to the purples!
