Day 29:Drugstore vs. High-End
by MUA's Cavewoman
We all tend to have certain preferences when it comes to color, texture, sheer or opaque, shine or matte, when it comes to choosing our lipsticks. I prefer full-on saturation of color, opaque, and gleam. Don't give me sheer. And you already know that I gravitate toward cool-toned pinks and roses. And I am an equal-opportunity lippie lover, having in my collection lippies that range in price from $32 for the new YSL Rouge Allure, to the bargain-basement NYX brand from the Perfume Outlet stores. I don't discriminate.
And yet some lipstick fans do. They might be brand-loyal (MAC, Chanel) or formula-loyal (Dior Addict? Revlon Soft & Smooth?) -- there are many who won't buy anywhere else but the drugstore, waiting for those wonderful Buy-One-Get-One-Free sales -- and there are those who won't even consider drugstore lipsticks at all.
There are great lipsticks to be had at any price, high, low, and in between, but there are also really terrible lipsticks to be had at all price points as well. In terms of high-end, those YSL lipsticks and the Dior Addicts are just the kind I love, creamy, full-color, with a bit of sheen.
And yet you could not give me a Chanel Allure, which I find to drag and dry out my lips and make them peel. At the drugstore, the Revlons and L'Oreals are favorites, with just the kind of texture and smoothness I like, a huge range of colors and formulas, and a bargain at the price. But Ms. Blogdorf already told us how awful those Cover Girl lipsticks were, and the NYX was even worse, with a sheer, almost non-existent color payoff.
Are you also an equal-opportunity lipstick buyer? Or do you avoid the high-priced brands and head for the drugstore? Or does drugstore makeup seem cheap to you just because it is cheap? Tell us in the comments!

I don't discriminate. For years I wore Rimmel Coffee Shine (and even turned my mother on to it).
I don't care for the Chanel Aqualumiere lipsticks, or the YSL Rouge Pur Shine (lasts a minute, no kidding). Guerlain's color range is extensive, yet often has no colors I want to wear. Nars matte lipsticks are chalky. Shu Uemura makes a glossy lipstick that dries down matte and accentuates lip lines terribly.
Some high-end products I do like:
Nars Velvet Matte pencil in Bahama and gloss in Rose Gitane
Guerlain Terracotta glosses (esp. the old, discontinued version, but also last year's Blonde Sun)
MAC Lipglasses (Quick Tease, Strawberry Blonde, Supreme, and the only coral I can wear: Possum Nose Pink)
For a mid-range gloss, I like Mermaid Cosmetics in Sun (found at Whole Foods and Mother Earth).
i really try to like drugstore brands--have tried many and never "fall in love" with a color. I do however "fall in love" with MAC , DIOR, Chanel Glossimers...Stila, etc. I will keep trying but I find a huge difference in the color payoff of these brands vs. store brands. I also love cool pinks, reds and mauves, being a dark haired blue eyed fair skinned woman..
I admit it, I'm something of a lippie snob. My makeup case has Nars, Chanel, Dior, YSL... I haven't even looked at drugstore lippies in years. What does Mary Kay fall under though? I have a couple of those.
I love Revlon's Super Lustrous (Nude Velvet, Plum Baby, Mauvy Night) for drugstores and Dior Addict (Lunar Brown) and Clinique (Metallic Sand, Black Honey)for the department store brands.
I also love Rimmel's Vinyl Lip gloss in Snog, which if my memory serves me right, I learned of from your blog, and am still using them (bought 2!) today!
I think I'm sort of a lippie snob, but I think in part that is just because of how high end cosmetics are accessible in a way that drugstore ones seem not to be. I want to test the color out on my hand, have someone who knows the product help me to select a color and/or formula...and in CVS, I'm on my own!
I'm not as into this as most of you, but I appreciated the comment in the post about one high end lipstick causing lip peeling - MAC and Chanel both do this to me, and who needs to spend $20 or more on a lipstick that causes massive, gross peeling (yes I use balm but these sticks have some extra evil in them).
I posted this before but it bears repeating:
"My new fav gloss/color is the NYC Liquid Lipshine in "Pink Kiss", a perfect frosty retro light rosy pink. $1.74 at Target, I will be buying every color they offer tomorrow.
It was an impulse buy, and I am thrilled! Color, shine AND staying power with compliments to boot. JOY!"
The color was opaque with nice saturation, stays on even with my Diet Papsi addiction and for the price, wow.
I tend to be an H/E girl. However, I too love L'oreal quality due to the pigmentation, moisture level, scent and flavor. Cannot abide the smell of Revlon. *gack*
I like both high end and drugstore brands. For lipstick, I prefer more expensive ones because they're better quality. The color payoff is greater, and doesn't require multiple coats in order to appear on my lips. I'm always on the lookout for sheer, moisturizing, and creamy lipsticks. They're so hard to find!
I tend to discriminate :) I have pigmented lips and lipsticks never look the same on me as they do in the tub, so I tend to prefer brands that have testers. I do own a few Max Factor Vivid Impact lipsticks that I love, but the rest of my lippies are MAC and Chanel.
I have to admit, I buy mostly high-end make up. It's because I can't afford the high-end clothes lol and I feel like this is my little way of treating myself.
I like to enjoy my entire make up routine experience every morning and I find that seeing that little pile of high-end names just makes my day start better.
I think I'm a packaging snob more than a product snob. Most of my collection consists of Nars and Chanel. MAC's packaging looks cheap, Dior is too blingtastic. I own a couple of L'Oreal glosses which are cute but these are strictly home-use and are hidden in a box away from the main stash. Sad isn't it?
I don't really care for lipstick cause it always dries my lips out. There is one lippie which has carried me through for years, which stays put for hours and that is MAC colored lipglass!

I really like NYX lipstick. The color payoff depends on the finish; the matte lipsticks are great whereas the shimmer/frost versions? Not so much. I only wish they labeled the lipstick accordingly.
drugstore lip products work fine for me. although i do get atrracted and excited to the beautiful packaging on th high-end products. however im more inclined toward the natural side when it comes to cosmetics, and so may i say m.a.c. lippies are way too thick and chalky for me. i'd much prefer a natural and sheer look. ;)
I love my MAC and Clinique l/s, but I also adore my NYC lipsticks. And all my lipliners are d/s- Rimmel and Jordana! I'm also partial to WnW glosses.
I only discriminate due to the lack of testers at the drug store. It is sheer luck when I happen to stumble on a color I love based on the color of the sticker label or that ridiculous plastic piece on the display that is supposed to be the color.
I will pay more to be sure I like the color and the ability to swatch and try on.
I discriminate, mainly because I rely on SAs to help match me with colors and textures I'll like, and I can actually swipe the color on my hand at counters. With drugstore buys, it's far more difficult to get a good sense of what the product actually is. Also, I'm a sucker for packaging, and department store brands really deliver. The main reason I don't buy drugstore lipsticks or makeup products in general is because a vast majority of the brands conduct animal testing, with the exclusion of Revlon and Almay, while almost all major department store brands don't, with the exclusion of Lancome and Biotherme being the two I can think of off the top of my head that are both high-end and test.
I'm an equal opportunity girl at heart, but I end up being a bit of a drugstore hunter due to budget constraints. That, and if I am going to pay 7X as much for a lippie, I want to like it 7X as much. Which doesn't typically happen. Most of the department store lippies I have are from GWP bags and ones that my more tan relatives bought and then realized were too pale (I'm the pasty one who benefits from this). But some day when I have a real job I'd like to have a good collection of both :)

I've aquired such a large makeup collection that i've decided to only buy high end. I can't give up my MAC, Clinique & Stila lippies.
I completely know what you mean Samantha!
