The Line Up Project: MAC Chromaline
Review by MUA's Cavewoman
I haven't had any new liners to review in quite a while, but I am on the lookout, just in case some new ones pop up that need to be tested and reviewed. And so when I heard about the new group of MAC liners in their Pro line, I had to try them out. These are called Chromaline and they are supposed to be waterproof. Of course that meant to me, good staying power, and I eagerly bought the Black and the Rich Purple. Well, good thing I read the little paper enclosure in the box. The Purple, along with five other shades, is listed as "not eye safe." Okay, MAC, why make a liner that is not eye safe? It's not lip-safe either, according to the paper enclosure. I'm not sure what I am supposed to line with this product. But the black was eye-safe, so I tested it.
In terms of texture, I would compare this one very closely to the Smashbox Jet Set. It's slipperier and creamier than the MAC Fluidlines. I could barely tell the difference between the Chromaline Black and the Smashbox Jet Set that I reviewed last month. It took a bit more patience to get a wiggle-free line, same as the Smashbox, and I kept thinking how similar they are. I used my Sonia Kashuk bent-angle liner brush to apply the MAC Chromaline. Staying power was no better than a regular MAC Fluidline on me. And it removed easily with the Benefit Gee That Was Quick eyemakeup remover. I have to say I am sadly unimpressed. Or, as Michael Kors would say, "I'm underwhelmed."
Both of these Chromalines are going back to MAC.

Patti, I received the Red one for Christmas and I'm SO disappointed that it isn't eyesafe. I was planning on using it as liner =( I tried it on my lips and it was FANTASTIC...but stained a lot. So I definitely wouldn't want this on my eyes unless I had a ton of protective base on my lids. I also tried using it for body art and it worked very nicely =)
I think Chromaline is supposed to be used for face painting.
the ones that aren't eye safe are meant for body art. :)
Hi Patti,
I read on temptalia.com that these Chromalines are only supposed to be used for body art and not much else.
Bugger huh?
Josie! I was wondering about the red, too! As a lip product too! I was afraid to try the purple after I saw the disclaimer on that enclosure.
Of course now I am curious about your body art!
Thanks to all for your comments! Since I do not do body art, I guess these Chromalines were not a good choice.
I'd love to see some photos of body art using the Chromalines!
patti-
I was wondering what you thought of the MAC Chill Collection? I stopped by the MAC counter yesterday to check out Edna and was drawn to the eye colors, but wondered if they were too close to some MAC staples. Any thoughts?
I also got stopped in my tracks by the Estee Lauder Fuschia Now collections, but haven't seen anyone else talking about it.
Thanks!
Ruby
Ruby, the Chill collection came and pretty much went before I could see all the products in person, but from what I did see, I liked it all. But I love a gray-eye-pink-lip look, so to me it was a winner.
I was stopped dead in my tracks too, by the new Lauder collection! That Fleur De Lis compact is gorgeous! Let us know if you try anything. The two shadow duos are beautiful as well.
