Lust, Loathing and a Little Lip Gloss

Estee Lauder's Ultimate Red Holiday 2009 Lip Glosses

Opulent Shimmer Gloss in Gold is a shimmery, glittery, glimmery gold. The pigment is on the sheer side. The shimmer beads are a mixture of gold and opal.

Opulent Shimmer Gloss in Cranberry is a muted orange red. There is no pink cast. The shimmer is golden.

These glosses are heavily scented with fig. The scent is pretty powerful and is strong straight from the tube. The texture is smooth like silicon yet light. No grit from the shimmer.

These lip glosses are sold out online. You might find some stragglers at your local Estee Lauder counter. They retail for $18.

Blogger With Pearl Lippie

Too Faced Girls Dig Pearls Lip Gloss

I purchased these lip glosses based on their shimmery goodness. I was dazzled by their spark and fire in my local Sephora store. The lippies are made from crushed sea pearls, vitamin E and peppermint extract. The pigment is fairly sheer but the glitter power is high. I prefer wearing these lip glosses solo and not layered with any lip products. The glimmer gets lost. They are non-tacky and feel very moisturizing.

Shell is a blush pink with hot pink glitter. It is a less intense and slightly pearlized version of Chanel's Astral Glossimer.

Pink Bling is a muted, sheer, lavender pink opal jammed packed with fine hot pink glitter. It made me lose my mind.

The lippies retail for $18 and are available at Sephora. Visit
http://www.toofaced.com/ for more details.

Disclaimer: I purchased both these lippies at my local Sephora store. Pink Bling is usually sold out...BTW.

It Could Be Sunshine

MAC's Style Black Lippies

I have mixed feelings about the glimmerglasses from the Style Black collection. They were murky and very light handed with pigment power. I layered these glosses over MAC's Midnight Media mattene lipstick for the swatches. BlackFire is a sheer black with a pinkish purple cast. This was quite pretty and had loads of potential. It looks fetching over plum lipsticks. Bling Black is a very sheer black with gold pearl. I did not swatch Blackware. This is a creamy true black. The pigment power is stronger in this one.

The glimmerglasses are $18 and are available at http://www.maccosmetics.com/

She's a Killer Queen

Lipstick Queen's Fifteen Minutes of Fame Pop Art Gloss in 11 minutes

Shes a killer queen
Gunpowder, gelatine
Dynamite with a laser beam
Guaranteed to blow your mind
Anytime

This is a punchy plum. It is wonderfully wearable and on the bright side. At first glance, I thought it could be a good match for MAC's Violetta or Stiletto. 11 minutes has more dashes of red violet pigment. This might be a more work friendly less vampy plum shade for fall.

This lip gloss is shimmer free. There is not a speck of glitter or a peppering of sparkle. (Keri: You will love this lippie!)

11 minutes retails for $16.50 and can be found at Barneys and Henri Bendels in NYC. It can be ordered directly from Poppy King's website @ http://www.lipstickqueen.com/product_frame.htm

Pop! goes the lip gloss

Review by Angie W and Jessica M

The two of us recently paid a visit to Lipstick Queen headquarters in New York, where the Queen herself, Poppy King, welcomed us and gave us an update on everything happening at her company, including a preview of Lipstick Queen’s new products for fall.

The latest product, released a few weeks ago, is Fifteen Minutes of Fame Pop Art Gloss. It was inspired by the Pop Art movement of the 1960s and by artist Andy Warhol’s prediction, “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for fifteen minutes.” His words are more timely than ever, and Lipstick Queen’s Fame gloss is a stylish way to feel famous without having to embarrass yourself on a reality show, appear naked on YouTube, or give birth to octuplets.

Fame Pop Art Gloss is not, Poppy stressed, the typical sparkly-nude lip gloss that so many young women have been wearing for the past decade. It has no shimmer. It has no scent. It’s offered in a full-color wardrobe, ranging from a delicate ballet-slipper pink to a rich merlot shade, so it’s an easy way to experiment with color. Best of all, it has a smooth, non-sticky consistency.

Angie was surprised by the wearability of 11 Minutes, a vibrant, blood-red purple that is a perfect romantic fall shade. She also loved Minutes 7, 8, 9, and 13. Jessica was drawn to 12 Minutes, a dusty rose, and to 8 Minutes, a fresh, pinky-red strawberry tone.

The next product Poppy discussed was Fired Up, a brilliantly tinted gloss that wears as a soft, sheer red. It’s packaged in a tube, and the lettering on its box was inspired by “FIRE HOSE” sign in the hallway of Poppy’s office building. She recalled standing in the hall one evening, waiting for the elevator and dreading a crucial work meeting the next morning, and looking at the sign while she stood and worried. She decided to turn that feeling of “emergency” into an opportunity, and she created this product around it.

Fired Up is meant to be a lip color with the same “super-powers” that Poppy felt when she was a little girl and she tried on her mother’s lipstick. It represents women’s need to rise to challenges at work, at home, and everywhere else, particularly in the current economic downturn when they have to juggle even more demands than usual. It’s like a cosmetic secret-weapon for the 2009 version of Rosie the Riveter! Best of all, when you wear Fired Up, you’ll be bringing out your own confidence while contributing to other women’s success. All the profits from this gloss will be donated to Count Me In, an organization that supports female entrepreneurs by providing financial resources, business education, and a supportive community.

As an entrepreneur herself, Poppy is wonderfully welcoming to women who admire her work—including the two of us. She even allowed us to examine the collection of antique lipstick cases and other vintage lipstick paraphernalia that she keeps in her office. Someday, we hope, we’ll have a chance to tell you more about that!

We’ll also be back with more details about Butterfly Ball Shimmer Treatment Lipstick, a new product for October 2009. According to the press release, this moisturizing lipstick “recreates the effect of butterfly wings on the lips,” in five sheer, iridescent shades that have a hint of turquoise blue to make your teeth appear whiter. We say, sign us up!

So, to sum up, whether you’re seeking fame (and fortune), playing with fire, or just want to have a ball this autumn, Lipstick Queen is offering something new to make you feel beautiful inside and out.
Fame Pop Art Gloss is available for $16.50 at Barneys, Henri Bendel, Space NK, and the Lipstick Queen website. If you’ve had a chance to try the glosses, tell us your favorite shade! Fired Up will be available for $14 at the same locations; you can join the waiting list at http://www.lipstickqueen.com .

Are Friends Electric?
Review for Sheer Gloss from Bobbi Brown

These are glosses that leave a tinge of color with a whiff of candy cotton.
Sailor in the tube looks like a rapberry jelly. In reality it leaves a "just bitten" smidge of pink. This is a very wet looking gloss but without a annoying tacky feeling. I think it feels very balm-like.
Marina Pink looks vampy in the tube but on the lips it is a crushed berry. This is cool toned and way flattering. Marina Pink truly surprised and delighted me.

These are limited edition and retail for $20.
Visit http://www.bobbibrowncosmetics.com/ for more deets.
FYI: Sailor is still available online.

The post was inspired by the Gary Newman cover by The Dead Weather.
It is so damn good.

Day 28: Pink Lippies of the future
Sneak peek of Shu Uemura's pink lippie collection

Shu Uemura's Rouge Unlimited Pink Collection, is a series of lipsticks
and glosses made with a Pink Hybrid Pigment, one of the purest pink pigments
ever discovered and patented by the cult Japanese beauty company. Thanks to
this breakthrough, this lip collection boasts the most vibrant hues available,
creating new and unique shades of pink never seen before.
Based on the photographs these pinks look lit from within. They appear bolder almost neon-like. This is very appealing to this pink lippie fan!

Here is the deets to the technology of the lippie series:

Until now, pink’s color palette was limited due to the
conventional way in which shades were processed and created.
This standard method mixes red and white pigments, which
create irregular shaped and sized particles that produce dull,
muddy pinks.

The Pink Hybrid Pigment, which was discovered by shu uemura
laboratories, is made up of a fusion between a mineral core
and an organic shell, which produces particles that are
perfectly round and regular in shape. This consistency is what
makes the hues of the lipstick so bright and pure
. This is what
creates the new and unique hues of pink seen in the collection
with shades that range from never before seen light, yellowish,
dark and bluish pinks.

Light pinks with yellow tints

PK310N gloss unlimited lip gloss

Light pinks with blue tints

Day 3: Princess Leia’s Lip Gloss or How to Make Your Lipstick Last through an Intergalactic War by Angie

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…oh no, it was actually 1977, and I was watching Star Wars for the first time. The credits rolled, the fabulous theme song started, and suddenly a princess with strange buns in her hair was flitting across a dark passageway, delivering top secret plans to the Death Star. But, more importantly, she was displaying the most wonderful lip gloss I’d ever seen.

While guys may have loved Princess Leia’s golden bikini slave look, we ladies have always adored the original look: long white dress with funky hood, silver belt, and that crazy hair. But what has always amused me is how Princess Leia’s juicy, cherry red lip gloss apparently lasted for several days, possibly weeks! This ever-lasting gobstopper of lip products endured through endless days of interrogation and torture on the Death Star, an escape from a prison cell, a fall down a garbage chute, and even a stolen kiss with her rescuer.

My theory of how Leia’s lip gloss survived for weeks? I think she had provisions including a stash of lip gloss in those buns. Like Amy Winehouse who apparently tucks necessities in her beehive or like Pam Grier in Coffee, hiding weapons such as razor blades in her formidable hair, Leia might have had a stash of cosmetics in her crazy updo. Hey, this girl was prepared – you never know when you might be swept off your feet by a space pirate who looks like Harrison Ford.

By the way, did you know that this piece of original dialogue was cut from Star Wars after test audiences seemed perplexed: “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope to find another tube of this fabulous, long lasting lip gloss and I only have half a tube left inside my right bun. Oh, and then there are these plans to the Death Star that you might need but first can you stop at that Duane Reade just outside Mos Isley Space Port?”

What would the great intergalactic lipstick or other beauty product of the future be able to do? Come on ladies, think like Ray Bradbury or Philip K. Dick if they were 18year old girls imagining the lip product of the year 2050. Remember in Total Recall when the receptionist could point a pen at her nails and w/a click the color changed? My lipstick of the future would be like a mood ring and change w/my whims, it would last all day and it would also retain moisture and sheen. It would be contained in the tiniest pen with a collapsible mirror that would open up like a tiny fan from one end.

Chanel Glossimer in Delight

This is a lavender lippie that has just a smidgen of silver shimmer. Worn alone it is murky and on the cool side.
If you are a daily reader, then you are aware of my quest to replicate the gray-plumish lippies I spied and coveted in Paris. This is another close contender. I have layered it over Bobbi Brown's Black Pearl with much success.
Delight is currently at your local Chanel counter.

Wei East White Olive Tinted Lip Smoother

This is a very tiny tube of hydrating power. The White Olive lippies give just a hint of color and a whole lot of shine.

The Pink Peony shade is a bright blue based pink shade that resembles OPI's Im India Mood For Love. My co-worker Gela is modeling it below. It lights up the lips and is so feminine.

Blackberry is a sheer plum shade. My co-worker Teresa is modeling this lippie. I have been obsessed with the perfect plum lip since Paris. This got close but I am still on the hunt for a holy grail violet color.
Pomegranate is a sheer pinkish red. It is another gorgeous pop of color.
The lippies retail for $10 and are available at HSN and Wei East.

Flirt!Cosmetics
Squeeze Me Super Shiny Lipgloss

An ultra shine lip gloss that is moisturizing, not sticky and tastes great.
It is available at Kohls for $10.

From left to right:
Thais is wearing Passion Potion. This is a shimmery chocolate shade.
Gela is wearing Pink Lemonade. This is a blue based pink with opalescent shimmer. This lippie looked so pretty on her that it might claim holy grail status in her heart.
Sandy is wearing Citrus Crush. This looks like a tart orange in the tube. However, it is an apricot nude shade. It was so flattering and lovely.
Teresa is wearing Heavenly Honey. This is very light pearl shade that layers well.
