White Nails on the Chanel 2009 HC Runway

Many moons ago, Chanel created a nail polish called Vamp. The legend is a makeup artist used a black magic marker to paint the model's nails black during a runway show. The press went nuts so they formulated a dark polish and the Vamp craze was born. You know the rest of the story.

A few days ago, Chanel sent models down the Couture runway with an intense white nail. This white is like snow on a bright sunny day. It was blinding.
Obviously this could be an upcoming polish trend for the future. This might be bottled and sold out before we even see it in person.
This might be the new millennium Vamp...born from a bottle of Liquid Paper from Office Max.

The makeup was also in shades of white. The skin was ultra pale with flushed cheeks and lips. The waterline was white and was surprisingly fresh and pretty. I loved the gamine winged black liner with the shimmery pale white shadow. I might try to experiment and play with white lids this weekend.
I wonder if I can recreate this with my Shiseido Hydro Powder in White Lights!

Let us know what you think of the look from the Chanel runway in the comments.

Chanel 2009 Spring Couture

I am always amazed at how Mr Lagerfeld can infuriate and delight me all in one show. One moment I am vexed at the bib shoulders and then I am consumed in a swoon over a paper flower detail.

It was the little things that made this collection special. He respected the economic climate by making the details so pure, simple and exquisite. They almost had an old fashioned, slightly grandmotherly quality to it. But on closer inspection the detail was so intricate and labor intensive. It took your breath away.
He made paper flowers and slivers of plastic look more glamorous than a crystal or a semi-precious stone.

Springtime twist with Zoya

Zoya's Twist spring collection boasts two sensational pinks along with a blue that resembles the feathers of a blue jay. It is my new Indigo. I have already worn it for two manicures.

Jo is the blue shade. This is my go-to shade for spring. Zoya really delivers on their blues. They are always unique and stand out in the sea of offerings in the nail polish world. I can not really decide if it is more periwinkle or cornflower blue. One co-worker stated that it was a lavender blue with a dash of shimmer. I think this might be the most accurate and perfect description for the polish.

Lilac is going to be a huge shade for spring. I just fell in love with MAC's Lavender Whip lipstick. This is a nail polish version. Where Lavender Whip is a subtle lavender, Zoya's Malia is a rich and bright Wisteria. It is miles away from a Barney-vibe. This puts you in the mind of Easter and spring. Malia is a straight forward cream with no shimmer.

Moxie stood out to me because it did not seem to fit with the collection. It was more bold and intense. It is a serious gorgeous purplish red cream. Slightly reminds me of the inside of a Bing cherry. Like a flushed dark fleshy pink.

Every cloud has a silver lining....
Harley is a pale, pale, pale shimmery silver that is actually warm toned.

This collection has two pinks that are not a smidge alike. Barbie is a blue based bubblegum pink. Cassi is a light salmon pink with shimmer.

All the polishes require 2 coats. I found Barbie to be on the streaky side. I think it might do better with another layer of the polish. Lasting power was the same as always. No issues except the usual wear and tear at the tips due to computer work.

The set retails for $36. You can purchase individual polish for $6 at Art of Beauty.

Lightly Lilac by MAC

MAC Pro Loose Beauty Powder in Lightly Lilac

During my last NYC trip, Patti and I visited a MAC Pro store. We fell hard for the loose pro powders. I caved on Lightly Lilac. This is a pearl-like lavender with violet shimmer. It is beyond stunning. I use it as a highlighter. I swear on my Lancome Behnaz lipstick that the lilac hue is subtle. It does not look bruise-like.

The other shades are:

Drizzlegold: A beige nude with gold and copper reflects. This gives the face a healthy glow.
Dancing Light: A creamy gold with white gold reflects
Peach Haze: A soft coral with gold reflects
Natural Flare: A peachy champagne with white gold reflects
Daisy Dust: A pale banana with gold reflects
Micro Pink: A pale pink with red reflects
Paperwhite: A soft white with pearl reflects

This is only available at MAC Pro stores. It retails for around $20. I tried to find my receipt to give you the exact price but that box is unorganized and full. I used my credit card a little too much in 2008.

Disclaimer: I purchased this powder at the MAC Pro store in NYC.

Angelina Jolie SAG Beauty Breakdown

Celebrity makeup artist Mary Burton wanted to create a 60’s look and chose to focus on Angelina’s eyes by applying lots of eyeliner and mascara. She used a liquid eyeliner (Lancôme Artliner in Noir) just above the lash line. To compliment Angelina’s eye color and to make her eyes really stand out, she applied a bluish grey eyeshadow (YSL Ombre Solo Double Effect Eyeshadow in #3 Blue Silk) to the eyelid. Finally, she applied several coats of Lancôme Courbe Virtuôse Mascara in Black. Mary added a touch of pink to the apples of the cheeks using Shu Uemura blush in M Pink 31. To create ultra-shiny and luminous lips, Mary used Lancôme Color Fever Gloss in Rose Jolie.

I think I need that Rose Jolie gloss!

I fell in love with this picture! Look at how he is looking at her.

Anne Hathaway SAG Beauty Breakdown

Celebrity makeup artist Kate Lee created a dramatic smokey eye by applying dark eyeliner to the upper lash line and blended it on the eyelid. To make Anne’s eyes pop, she applied several coats of Lancôme Ôscillation Mascara in Black for a faux-lash effect. Kate opted for a soft, stained pout. She applied Lancôme Le Lipstique lip liner in Sheer Natural to the entire lip, then coated the lips with Lancôme Color Fever Gloss in Seductive for a glossy finish.

Kate Winslet SAG Beauty Breakdown

Celebrity makeup artist Jillian Dempsey played up Kate’s eyes with lots of black eyeliner, mascara and shimmering shadow paired with a soft neutral palette on her lips and cheeks. Jillian used Lancôme Artliner in Noir on the upper lash line and then lightly dusted Jillian Dempsey Professional for Avon Eyeshadow Trio in Pebble Wash on the eyelid. She finished the eyes with a few coats of Lancôme Ôscillation Mascara in Black. For the lips, she used Serge Lutens nude lip liner and filled in the entire lip. Finally, she applied Color Fever Gloss in Engaging, a very sheer nude shade, for a high-shine pout.

I give you a sprig of Lilac: MAC Creme Team Collection

The lipstick is called Lavender Whip. This is a true lilac shade. I think it is highly flattering and 100% wearable. The formula is light as silk and ultra-creamy.
The cremesheen glass lip gloss is a milky baby pink. This is called Ever So Rich. It is like a dazzleglass without the sparks.

Together they are a lippie tour de force!

Concealer Chronicles:Kanebo's Sensai Concealer

It is a clicky pen with a brush tip to gently cover blemishes and dark circles. The pen requires two clicks and a quick jiggle. The formula does not come out in a rush which is a plus. I hate when too much product comes out.

The concealer formula contains Kanzo(licorice) extract, moistened powder(powder pre-moistened and covered with oil) and weightless glow factor(thin flat powder granules-reflects light evenly). It is a moist and ultra light formula that does not cake or gather in fine lines. My dark circles were still evident but less intense. As much as I like the dramatic results of Philosophy's concealer, I do appreciate the light texture of this formula. It is airy and that is a perfect texture for the sensitive skin under the eye. It comes in only three shades and is available at Kanebo counters. The price is around $33 and is a steal when compared to that certain cult classic that costs around 70 bucks.

Cosmetic Nerd

You know you might be a beauty junkie when you see a dress and think of a MAC eye shadow to go with it...

The Isabel Toledo dress was in the shade of lemongrass.
My first thought was that it looked like my beloved MAC eyeshadow called Jasmine. It is a strange mixture of yellow, gold and pea soup green.
This shadow has been discontinued for quite a while and used to fetch high coin on Ebay. I discovered it in a Saks drawer. I had no clue on how special it was until Cavewoman's eyes widened to saucers.

According to the fashion online bible, Fashionista, the Barneys windows were changed last night. The theme is Isabel Toledo.
Let us know what they are like. Pictures would be AWESOME!

Have a great Wednesday!

Holy Toledo!Michelle is wearing Isabel Toledo....

From Newsday:
Obama's choice of a warm golden-yellow coat and dress ensemble that appeared to be brocade with a bejeweled collar is significant on at least two counts. First, the color. Since the Elizabethan Era, shades of yellow have symbolized renewal and hope, a platform on which Obama based his campaign. Also, President-elect Obama has been vocal about his desire to improve relations with Cuba, and some wonder if Michelle Obama's choice of Narciso Rodriguez for the "We Are One," concert -- another Cuban-born designer, and now Toledo, also of Cuban descent -- has meaning.

Shimmer Junkies Unite: Chapstick True Shimmer Sticks

This is for the glitter girl who loves the power of a hydrating lip balm with a dash of shimmer and sparkle. This glimmer infused chapstick comes in two flavors Botanical Berry and Tropical.
Tropical tastes like a mixture of cake batter and coconut. Botanical Berry tastes like Trident gum.
The shimmer is ultra fine and leaves not grit. It appears quite luminous and pretty on the lips. This is a great and feminine alternative for the girly balm wearer.

It retails for $2.79 and can be located at drugstores.

Dolce & Gabbana Cosmetic Collection
Launches in June at Saks Fifth Avenue in NYC

Just when I thought that it was time to say goodbye to my Vogue subscription, an article by Viki Woods catches my eye and fills me with glee. Apparently the dynamic duo at Dolce & Gabbana have been working on a cosmetic line with Pat McGrath. The line boasts 27 cream lipsticks,12, semi sheer lippies, 12 glosses, 14 eye palettes, and a gaggle of blushes, bronzers, wet & dry foundations, nail lacquers and mascara. McGrath states "We used the strongest and the best pigments and the most modern technology. We looked for the lipstick that lastest the longest, had the best texture, felt the most comfortable, the most luxurious; it was just all encompassing. And obviously, we tested for months, on team members and models. That's what we do."

Everything from the color choice to the pale gold packaging is from the minds of Docle & Gabbana. The star of the entire collection, the Dahlia lippie, is a quite gorgeous looking red. Very Merlot-like in shade. The added touch to this lippie is the engineering. With each swivel of the lipstick, a puff of powdery rose fragrance is emitted. The boys wanted the smell of a vintage smelling cosmetic. I am not sure how the kids will feel about this trick. On makeupalley's fragrance board there is always a throw-down when "grandma perfumes" are mentioned. It appears that there are some generations that do not appreciate or understand the classics. They want to smell like cupcakes. I personally love a powder with a rich rose scent or adore the science behind the satisfying click of a compact. I am excited to see a team bring back the old glamour of cosmetics. The influences for the collection range from Rome's Cinecitta in the fifties and the boys own gardens.

One of my favorite parts of the article is a quote concerning Pat McGrath. "Pat has known us a long time; she knows why we like red, gold. She understands exactly what I mean when I say "Black"-she knows I mean black from Stromboli. It is not a sad black". Gabbana says, drawing with the eye pencil, "it's a volcanic and sparkling black."
Other products described are eye palettes. There are blues inspired by Portofino and a nude shade was inspired by the dresses worn by Jean Harlow.

According to this Vogue article the makeup collection will launch in June at the Saks Fifth Avenue's flagship store in NYC. If you have any more information or deets please post in the comments. Patti and I currently planning a NYC summer trip and I would love to coincide our trip with the launch. I want to see the Dahlia lippie in person.

Guerlain's Spring Collection 2009: Paradis Exotique

Oh, I've been to Niece and the Isle of Greece while I've sipped champagne on a yacht
I've moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo and showed 'em what I've got
I've been undressed by kings and I've seen some things that a woman ain't supposed to see
I've been to paradise, but I've never been to me

(lyrics to I've Never Been to Me)

The spring palette compact designed by Hervé Van der Straeten is too pretty to use. The palette is called 404 Paradis Exotique and contains 4 shades. Each shadow is etched with a bird of paradise. The green shade reminds me of my beloved and long discontinued MAC's Metamorph. It retails for $58 and is limited edition.

The stand outs in this spring collection are the KissKiss glosses. The shimmer power is very similiar to YSL's Golden Glosses. The pigment is sheer and the glitter is very fine. The green shade is the jewel. It is the one that incited oohs and ahhs from the gang.

804 Orange Interdite (sheer peach with gold and orange glitter)
805 Cerise Tentation (sheer coral with pink glitter)
806 Pomme du Desir (green shade)

These 3 Spring shades are limited edition and retail for $29.

The new single shadows (Ombre Eclat Mono) are very rich yet light in pigment power and texture. They are easily blendable, slightly luminous and act as a great wash for the eye.
140 L’Instant Precieux (Pearly)
141 L’Instant Charnel (Velvety)
142 L’Instant Fauve (Sparkly)
143 L’Instant Cuir (Sparkly)
160 L’Instant Coquin (Velvety)
161 L’Instant Fleuri (Pearly)
180 L’Instant Fume (Pearly)
181 L’Instant Emeraude (Sparkly)
182 L’Instant Nuit (Sparkly)
(for the taupe lovers)
190 L’Instant Indigo (Sparkly)

This collection is currently at Guerlain counters at your local Saks store. Our local Dillards did not have it in stock yet. It is also available at Sephora.com
