40 Days and 40 Nights of Beauty Cult Classics
Day 28,Smith's Rosebud Salve
Rosebud Salve has been around since 1892 and is often lauded as a cult classic by the magazines. It is a multi-functional lip balm. It is supposed to help with chapped skin, blemishes, diaper rash and detergent burn.
I have never had good luck with this can. It seems to accelerate the flake issue on my lips. The texture and feel is similar to Vaseline.
In fact the can lists the ingredients as cotton seed oil, aromol with essential oils blended in a special petrolatum base.
It is thick and kinda goopy.
Rosebud gives the lips just a tinge of color and a dollop of shine. The price ranges from $6-$7 and it can be found at your local Anthropologie store.

What do you think of Rosebud Salve? Do you think it is worthy of cult status or is it overhyped?
How does it fare in comparison to Kiehls?
Let us know in the comments.
Disclosure: I purchased this can at my local Anthropologie store.

The tin is just so adorable, but this stuff just doesn't work at all for me. The more I used it, the more peely-flaky my lips became. Finally I just cleaned out the tin and used it for storing safety pins.
I'm not impressed witb Rosebud. I've used Kielhs #1 for years.
this product doesn't work, aquaphor works much better!
i like it but i agree, it's a wee bit over-hyped.
when i started reading all of the beauty blogs, this was everyone's stable. so i purchased it and as soon as i opened it up and the scent reached me i thought "this is just tinted vaseline"
I love Rosebud Salve but once had a terribly melty, goopy, bag-ruining-close-call, and although I have still have love, I'm longing for a squeezy-tube option. (Think: Juicy Tube.)
Also, I'm with the others - I'm an Aquaphor girl all the way!
I'm with anon 8:18! I don't fancy Kiehls or Rosebud but I love Aquaphor.
I think the original rose flavor is gross--I like the minted rose flavor better. But I agree, I think that there are other better lip balms out there.
I like the color and scent, but it is just over hyped vaseline. So I just use vaseline instead. But my husband likes it as a hair groom when he runs out of body Shop coconut hair shine.
i hate rosebud salve. it glorified vaseline.
am I its only fan? maybe so! I love it and it works well for me. My 4-year-old daughter fell in love with it too and so she has her own tin. So then I had to get my son one too. It is just a nice, thick, greasy lip balm which is the texture I like -- I don't care for waxy, oily or sticky ones. I used to like Kiehls but the formula changed at some point so now I don't use it.
I like it, but not really on my lips! I've used it on my hands and cuticles -- and a couple of times on my face if it's really flaky and dry (particularly around my eyebrows). It's good for traveling because it's a solid and not a liquid, but I don't use it every day. It's good enough; I don't know if I'd buy another one if I actually manage to go through this one (I don't think I will).
oh, how i love rosebud salve. but what i love even more is minted rosebud salve. its got a bit more of a tint and looks awesome on my lips. i love this stuff!
Over hyped. I like regular chapstick stuff, it's less of a fuss [dipping your dirty fingers into a tin and then applying it on your lips? GROSS] and it's not as greasy.
I love the retro tin, but this stuff is terrible! I added it to my List of Overhyped Cosmetic Products (which includes Maybelline's Great Lash mascara--yuck!).
I got it at Bath & Body Works a as part of a kit. When I opened it at home I remember thinking "what is all the fuss about?" It isn't anything special. Two years later, I still have the tin in my nightstand and have repurposed it to use occasionally on my cuticles.
I think the tin is very cute but I hate the product. It's fake perfume rose scent and sticky texture just do nothing for me. I prefer Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment, Epicuren Lip Balm or I use Fresh Orange Chocolate Shea Butter. The Shea Butter is the multi-tasker in the bunch. It saves my hands in the winter, my nose during colds and my lips at night. It even works as a great body moisturizer if you have the 20 minutes needed for it to really sink in. Sadly Fresh discontinued it but I hope one day it will return to the shelves.
Rosebud Salve smells wonderful but doesn't do much to keep my lips soft. I found a product by By Terry that smells like a more natural rose and keeps my lips super soft and flake free. As for Kiehls, its my least favorite stuff. It actually rates below Rosebud in my honest opinion. However, when I visited NY I noticed that my Kiehls did actually work. i don't know if it's the change in humidity or what. When I returned to Cali I found that the hydro type makeup from Awake (think like Vincent Longo Water Canvas) dried up shortly after reaching LAX. I guess conditions make a difference. My favorite budget balm is Perfueria Gal Madrid (often sold along tins of Rosebud Salve) in Red Currant.
It's very over-hyped! I went out to Sephora to buy it because all the blogs raved about and it doesn't come close to being as good as my reliable Kiehl's Balm. I ended up giving the balm to my husband and 5 years later - it's still sitting on the nightstand - not used!
I think this product is overrated. It does nothing for my chapped lips. I was disappointed.
I have to admit i do enjoy Rosebud but it has to be very very cold out! otherwise Kiehls is def a better lip treat!
Xxo
My sorority sisters swear by it but I have the same problem - it just doesn't work for me. I've used Kielhs #1 but Ole Henriksen's Fresh Lips with SPF15 works best for me!
what's the thinking on elizabeth arden 8 hour cream?? i have a tube, but wonder if it was worth it..
seems a lot like vaseline!
Kiehl's is much better! I love #1 as well as the LE flavored ones they had at Christmas.
I think Rosebud *and* Kiehl's are *both* overhyped! You might as well just buy a jar of Vaseline and get it over with.
On the other hand, I love Malin + Goetz Lip Moisturizer, Nuxe Reve de Miel balm, and Lush Honey Trap. :)
I LOVE my Rosebud salve. I smooth it on my lips and rub what's left over into my cuticles. I just bought another tin this weekend in a Brambleberry scent. I love that one too. It seems to add a bit of a pink color to my lips.
BURTS BEES replenishing lip balm w/ pomegranate oil works for me. kiehl's and rosebud salve doesn't they're all hype
I have their strawberry one, and though I like the packaging and the scent (reminds me of a childhood Hello Kitty lip balm I had) it dries out my lips.
Rosebud is over-hyped. Better for cuticles and hands then the lips.
I've liked it fine enough, but I've yet to repurchase my first tin (or even find where that first tin is hiding now). I'm also not fan of the Kiehls fan either though. If given the choice, my favorite gel-like product is Aquaphor. My favorite balm-like product is BE's Shea balm.
What I like better is the Chai Rose Lip Balm by Badger. It comes in a pretty little retro tin like the Rosebud and has a much better (harder) texture. Really nice on the lips and the nails.
I am a huge fan of Rosebud Salve. I have a tin in my desk at work, one in my purse and one in my beside table. I use it everynight on my lips and cuticles. Works like a charm.
I have tried the mint, menthol and honey versions and I enjoy all of them!
I haven't tried this yet, but at this point I'm looking for anything to salvage my lips!
I gotta say, I'm never without this stuff, and I go through it like water...very gooey water. I have sensitive eyelids that sometimes get dry and are excema-prone. Because of that, I'm careful about putting eye cream on my upper eyelids, so I just use them beneath my eyes and dab Rosebud on my lids.
Now, I'm even using it during the day, instead of eye shadow-just a dab to add a little extra gleam, paired with black liner and mascara, and I'm good to go in the morning. I even keep a tin at my desk to refresh my glossy lids during the day--and rather obsessively and unconsciously apply it, sometimes inappropriately, like during meetings!
I have to admit, I am BAFFLED. The only way my rosebud salve develops a vaseline like texture is if I leave it in a hot car. The scent doesn't seem fake at all to me, and there is no flavor. It's never sticky, and it's one of the only balms I've come across that doesn't wind up making my lips dry or chapped if I don't keep reapplying every ten minutes. I also love it for cuticles. To each her own, but I'm definitely a fan.
I bought this and have no idea why it's so popular.. I think it got that way just because some makeup artists and celebs were using it and mentioned it in a magazine.
Mark's soothing pink colored lip balm in a tin is much better. It actually works. All this is is vaseline, tinted and greasy greasy.
I have used this product every night before sleep for the last five years or so. Nothing makes my lips feel as soft in the morning. Works for me.
The strawberry one works great for me, and I like the scent, but the Original one just smells gross in my opinion!
I love Rosebud Salve and I have 2 tins going at once--1 in my purse and another in my living room. (Kiehl's #1 totally didn't work for me, btw.) I've even had a tin survive going through the washing machine.
The texture is great, keeps my lips soft, and I like it for prepping my lips before gloss or lipstick. I've also found it useful for hands and dry spots in a pinch.
Oh my goodness - it's one of the loves of my life! I love it so much that I have it in every scent - Rosebud Salve, Minted Rose, Strawberry and the new Brambleberry Rose.
I love it, I've blogged it and I can't live without it. I use it at night and wake up with it still on.
i don't like it. even my grandmother was too cool to use this stuff. a friend likes it, but she constantly reapplies it--because her lips are even dryer now than before she started using it.
Sucks. Hardcore. Makes me look like I just ate greasy, fried chicken. Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment all the way!
I have never used the Rosebud product. But after reading all of your comments, I do not think I will try it! I agree with anonymous, aquaphor is a fantastic product especially in the winter months!
I've had the same tin for, like, two years. I don't think it's very effective as a lip balm, but when I burned my fingers over my tea pot a few months ago and didn't have anything else, I put the Rosebud Salve on it and it was like a miracle.
I've also used it on cuts and it's been great. Total crap as a lip balm, but as an actual salve, it's great!
I'm a Badger Balm addict. I try to avoid petro or mineral oil based products, as I am slightly allergic. Badger balm comes in both the tin and the tube, so you have options, plus a ton of great flavors/scents. All natural and now they've gone organic.
i use it on my hands mixed with a bit of one of my fav lotions and it has been a winter god send..but i rarely ever put it on my lips
I like rosebud salve but i'm completely addicted to burts bees. i also sometimes use vaseline but when my lips are really chapped ive found something i think is way better. my mom told me to use A&D (technically for diaper rash) but it works so well! it smells and tastes kinda gross but i use it before bed and my lips are perfect by morning!
OMG i love this!!! It works wonders for my dry chapped lips! I don't see how anyone could not like it =)
I just don't have any luck with this stuff and I just can't get past the rose fragrance. Kiehl's won my heart long ago and I am a loyal girlfriend.
I love it. Not obsessively, but appreciatively. I like that it can be used for several beauty purposes.
My only complaint is that if you live somewhere hot (ie, Florida) you can't really keep it in your purse or car, as I enjoyed doing through Boston winters. It melts and becomes a literal hot mess.
And it could stay on a bit longer.
It's my go-to bedside gloss now, after dabbling with mint, Carmex, and others.
I love Rosebud Salve, especially the minted rose. It works great as a lip balm for me and even better as a salve. When I get dry patches on my face in the winter I use it and unlike other heavy moisturizers it doesn't make me break out. It's great on elbows and cuticles. Also, and this is somewhat gross, if you get sores on the inside of your nose from a cold rosebud salve+ q-tip= salvation.
I was once an avid user of Rose Bud Salve, until i found my lips getting drier and drier due to the petrolatum base. However, the smell is amazing and if you dap a lil on your cheek bones it serves as a great highlighter. I now use Keihl's but only by default. I have yet to find a lip balm that i truly love.
I now use Kiehl's Baby lip balm which I like a lot, and has a more hygenic packaging than Rosebud Salve.
RS is just straight up gross; the scent was nausea-inducing, a mix of rubber and cheap rose. Did nothing to soothe chapped lips, and the tin got dirt and bits in it. Yech.
I just rebought the orginal and the strawberry just because I liked the natural color it gave and it did made lips soft. But I do agree with everyone else it is glorified vaseline. I was itching to get it again but now that the itch has been scratched I will probably not repurchase. I found a beeswax lip balm for $1 that does the trick too. Btw I HATED Fresh Sugar balm. It is sooooo sticky and not moisturizing at all! Im stil in search of a great tinted lip balm.........
I love Rosebud salve!! I had put a dent in it, but on my honeymoon I guess it got hot in the car and got kinda melty which caused it to do this weird suction thing where me or my husband couldn't get the lid off for a few weeks! He finally got it off....and now it won't close all the way. So I will be getting another one!!
